Waterworld
In a futuristic world where the polar ice caps have melted and made Earth a liquid planet, a beautiful barmaid rescues a mutant seafarer from a floating island prison. They escape, along with her young charge, Enola, and sail off aboard his ship. But the trio soon becomes the target of a menacing pirate who covets the map to 'Dryland'—which is tattooed on Enola's back. From TMDB

unlabelledView post →The tactile nature of the production values in WATERWORLD is my favorite thing about the film. So much of the kinetic energy that fuels the action is in-camera and plays like a cinematic breath of fresh air today.
unlabelledView post →WATERWORLD has one of the most successful theme park rides ever, is a better movie than TRON, and still never got a remake! bsky.app/profile/broo...
unlabelledView post →The stunt coordinator on Waterworld also worked on Matilda! They were fewer stunts on our movie, though.
unlabelledView post →30 years ago today WATERWORLD was released in theaters, producing the true definition of blockbuster excess in its post-apocalyptic ocean adventure thats aged incredibly in the decades since. For a film thats notorious for going over budget every dollar is on the screen from the sets to the stunts.

Chotiner: Yet I have here a photograph of you at summer camp in 1997 with your ankles tied together in the pool- Me: No, no, no, no

unlabelledView post →When I was movie editor at EW, we came up with this idea for a Waterworld cover. We thought it was funny--he'd spent so much time shooting on water--and obv. Costner thought it was funny enough to play along. Readers and the industry HATED it and him--"He's spitting at Hollywood." You never know.
unlabelledView post →One thing I liked about the movie WATERWORLD was that in the end Kevin Costner gets his hard-earned victory, guides his newfound family to Dry Land, chills there for about 5 minutes and says "This place sucks. I'm going back on my boat alone." He was a true poster.
unlabelledView post →It’s like taking over a movie studio and immediately green lighting remakes of Heaven’s Gate, Ishtar, and Waterworld. People might conclude your agenda isn’t on the up and up.
unlabelledView post →Thought this was one of those floating villages from the movie Waterworld
unlabelledView post →I think where I'm at on WATERWORLD is that it's a bad movie that is frequently compelling and entertaining and occasionally even likeable because of the way in which it is bad bsky.app/profile/lawn...

But in reality Waterworld was the movie that made people say Costner was grandiose and difficult to work with; The Postman (which ran 3 hours and couldn't even gross $20M) was the movie that made the industry say, okay, he's done.
unlabelledView post →I always felt bad when we got an actor to do a concept-y cover and it didn't work. Here's one, also from the Waterworld summer, that did--thanks to a very game movie star who was up for doing a post-scandal print interview, and an excellent stunt baby!
unlabelledView post →Is this dumb bitch really saying that the administration’s plan is us all living in the 1995 movie & record shattering box office disaster Waterworld??
unlabelledView post →This was the exact attitude that caused film journalism to collude in trying to destroy both Waterworld and Titanic in the 90s with a barrage of endless negative press and doomsaying. They were both deemed to be car crashes in the making doomed to a studio destroying level of failure.
unlabelledView post →It was a punchline when it came out but revisiting Waterworld, this movie is pretty amazing.
unlabelledView post →Kevin Reynolds: I have made for you, the film, Waterworld, a post apocalyptic warning about global warming and resource dependency. Jim O'Neill: Introducing Waterworld! Where freedom is infinite and maybe you can even do a little heroin!

unlabelledView post →Waterworld. At one time, the most expensive flop ever. Truth is, it's not a terrible movie. Weird as fuck, but not terrible. Also insipred a great stunt show at Universal Studios that ran for decades.

This movie had a fresh, awesome idea—a post-apocalyptic world ruled by dragons. Imagine that: dragons returning to our modern world, wreaking havoc, destroying everything in their path. Humanity is left in ruins, struggling to survive against the new apex predator. We’re just lunch meat. What a…

The "OMG a madman director/producer/star is burning money on NONSENSE and a whole studio is going to COLLAPSE!!!" coverage for 'Cleopatra,' 'Heavens Gate' and 'Waterworld' were all HUGE stories and paid a lot of bills for film journos in their day... 2/3

unlabelledView post →there's a theoretical version of Avatar that would've come out in 1999 as like, a compromised albeit endearing VFX-heavy scifi movie in the same occupational niche as like, Jurassic Park or Waterworld. that the first movie came out in 2009 seems entirely anachronistic. look at this fucking poster

unlabelledView post →Writer/director David Twohy, along with Diesel, created the Riddick character. I’m a fan. He wrote THE FUGITIVE and WATERWORLD, and has been a solid genre craftsman for many years. Check out BELOW, a World War II horror film about a submarine crew tormented by unseen forces. It’s great.

Did you know, it was Roger Corman who told a young writer that if he could write a Mad Max rip off, he would let him direct it. The writer, Peter Radar, wanted to be a director and came back with a script he wrote called Waterworld. Corman liked the script but said, “Are you out of your mind? This would cost us three million dollars to make this movie!”

unlabelledView post →Waterworld, AKA 'Mad Max at Sea', is an enjoyable romp if you ignore timescales, water pressure at depth, the effects of salt water on metal, the long-term effects of weather, the laws of physics generally and the apparent helplessness of the two female characters. Other than that, I really like it.
