What people are saying
Mixed reception: charming concept but flawed execution divides players.
Players praise the game's unique blend of farming, tower defense, and roguelite elements, with many highlighting its vegan theme and cute art style. One player calls it "a unique combination of stunning artwork, engaging gameplay mechanics and witty dialogue" (R17), while another notes it is "wonderful to see a game that doesn't involve killing animals" (R1). The humor and puns are also frequently celebrated. [17][1]
However, many criticize the game for being repetitive, poorly balanced, and lacking polish. One player states it "gets boring and repetitive pretty quick" (R28), while another complains about "severe balance issues" (R27) and a third calls it "crap game, unable to grow enough" (R32). The difficulty curve is also a common point of frustration, with some finding early game too hard and later stages too easy. [28][27][32]

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My husband recently got me into gaming, so admittedly I’m not great at it. This game has been engaging, and entertaining. The way the achievements are reached makes it feel much more rewarding then some of the other games I’ve tried. I’m colorblind, and for the most part the game is accessible to me. There’s a few biomes where it’s hard to see the glow around bushes and plants so I wish we could pick the color that shows around them, but outside of that the art style really helps me be able to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You can read my other reviews [url=https://www.indiecornergames.com/] here! Voltaire is the second title released by the hands of the Digitality Games studio and presents itself as a mixture of two very different concepts, but which together go hand in hand in a very pleasant way. This mixture is between an Action-Roguelike and a Farming, in the “peculiar” locality inhabited by Dracula, Transylvania. The story is simple, Voltaire, Dracula’s youngest son, feels the need to change his eating…

Trully a great game to spend an afternoon just destroying these pathetic mobs that dare get near my turnips. Also, anywhere the crowberry grows, is my domain. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't write a lot of reviews, but this one, this one I felt as though NEEDED one. It's one of those "Diamonds in the Rough" kind of games. The art style is adorable, and the writing is filled to the brim with dad-jokes galore. But, the gameplay, the gameplay is where this game shines! The game was EXTREMELY hard to understand at first. I died, A LOT. I didn't fully understand the mechanics to be honest, so death was repeated, night after night. After the first BIG boss shows up and I got…

The end result was that I got shuffled to work on Lawlor's next game and Silver took my seat with Popadiuk to work on Cirqus Voltaire. But I was still working on pinball. And I got introduced to...Bud.
unlabelledView post →It's a Tower Defence game with a lot of grinding for resources. It feels like 75% of the game is just running around the small area running into trees hoping for a bit of wood, or collecting food to eat so you can replenish energy so that you can spend said energy on water plants so that you can chase water droplets so that you can spend more energy on watering your plants so that you can grow food so that you can then repeat the endless cycle of grinding. Defensive plants feel pretty…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cute but simple. Presents an okay amount of different mechanics as its foundation, which shows a lot of promise; but how much those features get expanded in the future remains to be seen. The game has a nice artstyle, reasonably thematic music and passable dialogue. All together it gives the world a fair amount of tangible polish, although the lack of animations on many sprites does feel cheap currently. While the dialogue is fine the absence of a more expansive character roster does leave a…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Everything is there, But it needs time. This is a Plant vs Vampire. The game is beautiful, no bugs very smooth. Coop is nice. Gameplay loop is good but... Problems are: Difficulty goes from impossible (up to level 2) to too easy As soon as you get to level 5. Game play mechanic is extremely repetitive. plant eat fight repeat. Only the boss bring a nice change. You can just farm xp early on and blast through the game. Changing map doesn't do much because you can find any plant with cthlu or…

unlabelledView post →A fun concept with some severe balance issues. 1. It's advertised as a roguelite, but it's not actually a roguelite (at least in story mode) because I can't lose! If the house is destroyed, I start the day again, infinitely. But it's still possible to get into an unwinnable state if my crops are destroyed and I'm too hungry to plant new crops. So why can't you just let me die? This is not the kind of undeath I wanted to experience. 2. Too much time is spent mindlessly wandering about the map,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I want to like this game, but the polishing is just too bad to be enjoyable. It's like plant vs zombie in 3d space like don't starve, you have fixed places where you can plant the defensive towers and also plants for gaining resources. This is an interesting concept but how they execute it is pretty bad. - You can't check the area of your tower before building it (same with defensive plants) - In fact you can't check any of the stats (even damage or attack speed) of the defense before building…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cute art style and it looked like it could be fun, but gets boring and repetitive pretty quick. There just isn't a single aspect of it that I find particularly enjoyable. Combat is very weak - just running around in circles and pressing the attack button. Little control of where stuff hits and enemies running around in every possible direction. The day phase where you gather stuff just turns into a very long grind. You can stop early, but risk losing out down the line. And you're allowed to…

Set in Transylvania, players assume the role of Voltaire, Dracula's rebellious son, who chooses a plant-based diet over traditional vampiric bloodlust. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I recommend Voltaire for its 18-20 hours of Story Mode, no more or less. Voltaire is a tower defense game that alternates between timerless farming and crafting (day) and real-time attacks on Voltaire's farm (night). Neither portion of the game, on its own, is particularly original or shows any outstanding depth of gameplay. However, the game nevertheless remains fun. Day: Resoure-Management By day, Voltaire must harvest resources and craft and plant defenses for his home. Every week, he…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun game, but... I just think the blood cost of everything is too high. Also, to repair the house, it costs 10 wood for 1HP healed... it takes a bit to get 10 wood and 1 hp is literally nothing because when the enemies attack the house they kill it extremely fast even when it is at full health. overall very enjoyable and looking forward to updates until i continue with my Voltaire adventure

unlabelledView post →crap game, unable to grow enough, and when you do it does not cover your hunger to grow that 1 item. so your constantloy hungry, the only way is to die at night, and respawn with 50/50 hunger. surviving teh night will still leave you with 100% hunger so unable to do anything. Mobs destroy what crops you have at night or destroy your house to reset that night. Thx but not fun, just crap. 58mins uninstalled and thrown into junk folder
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a unique combination of stunning artwork, engaging gameplay mechanics and witty dialogue. The game's artwork is a standout feature as the design of each character and element is incredibly detailed. The dialogue in the game is very well-written, with some of the best puns I've ever seen in a game. Voltaire is definitely a fun experience with a ton of replay value.

unlabelledView post →Idea is good honestly, the art style, etc, but the game has no depth, no meat, and the vamp being vegan doesn't justify it lol :p Unfortunately, it is only fun for like 3 hours, after that, it gets very repetitive with nothing else to do that prepare, more or less, for the night, and fight at night/
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cute and cozy (in it's own spooky way) Tower Defence Roguelike. The mechanics are easy to learn, gameplay is kept interesting with the introductions of new baddies and plants, not to mention the jokes are great. Early game can be a bit tough due to lack of resources and some mechanics don't make sense...they could use some fleshing out. I was able to 100% the game in 11 hours (as of writing this review two achievements won't register). 8/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really, really wanted to like this game, but I can't find myself recommending it to anyone. While the art style is cute and the first few minutes of the game-play are fun, it gets so very repetitive and boring so, so, sooo quickly. It's not a bad game, inherently, but it is sadly not my cup of tea since I enjoy more challenging and fun game-play, and just generally MORE game-play in and of itself. Perhaps one day I'll give it another shot, but for now, it's been refunded!

unlabelledView post →I'm so sad to say this but I wouldn't recommend this game. It's too buggy as it is right now. I have a pretty high tolerance for grindy stuff and this 2D atmosphere and running-into-things-for-resources reminds me a lot of Wytchwood, which I loved. (And is honestly WAYYYY more grindy than this). But after eight hours of playtime, the game glitched, and the way it did it... with how there's not an in-game way of saving on another slot to go back a day... if I wanted to keep playing, I'd have…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The first couple of hours of this tower defense meets farming game are ok, but then quickly the realization of just how repetitive, badly balanced and buggy it actually is sets in. And don't get me started with how annoying it is to craft stuff and how everything in the gameplay just takes absolutely way too long. I guess it is to try and mask the fact about just how little content there actually is in this game. There would have to be a lot of love, content and quality of life improvements…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted to like this game. For a good long while I was on the fence as to whether to recommend it or not, because it is not a completely terrible game. But I landed on "do not recommend" for a few reasons. While the game does have a few good features, I feel like the "cons" far outweigh the pros, and the major sticking point for me was what seemed like a very poor sense of balance leading to the back half of the game becoming a tedious grind with not much reward. First of all, the pros: The…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't feel this game is fully ready. I'm sad because I was really looking forward to playing this game but it's a bit difficult. I made it to day 7 with the first boss but found it impossible to protect my plants, house and kill the boss at the same time. The amount of enemies on day 7 is infinite and the traps aren't powerful. If the death had started back to day 1 rather than repeatedly starting me on day 7, I think it'd be more manageable for me to spend time leveling myself up. Or maybe…

Its not very challenging, which may be a little disappointing to those who tend to play roguelikes, but its a lot of fun and manages to stay fun for the entire duration of the game. Looking forward to revisiting it after the early access period and replaying it all over again to see what is added, but even in its current state its a great game well worth the price of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Voltaire is an interesting mix between Don't Starve and a Tower Defense game coupled as well with some Rogue-like elements like, for example, in terms of upgrades you occasionally get. I found it to be quite addicting once you survive the first few days and get the gist of it, playing around with your hunger while maintaining your crops and trying to expand and make things more automatized is fun! The design style is cute and cozy and the dialogue is hilarious, if you're a fan of these…

If you don't you'll have to spend 80% of your building farm plots on attacking crops rather than edible ones. Everything uses gems, which don't drop enough at all. every unlock, every shield barrier that actually makes the game playable, every craftable uses these, it feels like one of those idle games that purposefully make everything take longer to pad out…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun game! Once you wrap your head around a good balance between growing your crops and defending them, the game is quite nice!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Voltaire is the kind of game you turn to after a long day. It has a bit of everything - management, action, survival, humour. But not too much of anything in particular. Everything looks well put together, and you can tell the amount of care that went into making this game. However, there are still some kinks that could do with a bit of ironing - which is to be expected, considering it is still in early access. Looking forward for the next updates. And to play some more, of course.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The games visuals are adorable whilst the game play keeps itself tricky in a good way. As it's in early access, there is limited things that can be done, I would love to see more additions to the skill tree be added, as well as maybe different difficulties or more things in the reliquarium. There is a point where the game does get a little easy in terms of getting food mid game, but i have yet to get to end game yet. Absolutely love this game, and I have recommended it already to others who…

I can already tell you this game will be in the running for the 'one more day' award; it is almost impossible to put down. There are many things working together to make Voltaire an excellent game.
