Game needs a patch to remove this requirement. Until then it is unplayable. I believe you can still play with couch co-op in single player, but there are better ways to program this for a shutdown.

TL;DR - The game is unbeatable solo, until level 3 which you might solo it due to a single weapon type, nothing else matters but ONE WEAPON. Desync issues are common, leaving players effectively on different maps sometimes staring at walls while their partner moves freely. Levels can become unplayable mid-session, breaking progression entirely. If your main goal is co-op, be aware that this game does not reliably support it.
