It's not the most groundbreaking narrative premise on paper, as it begins with a fairly straightforward revenge/vengeance plot, but it's the way this game executes that premise that really makes it stand out. The narrative feels incredibly grounded, raw, and emotionally provocative, all while using its simple foundation to explore much deeper themes like purpose, loss, and personal identity. While the relatively short runtime keeps the…

unlabelledView post →I don't really like the fact that I'm leaving a negative review... This game is actually really cool. I want to like it, because it's all there--art direction, story, music, visuals... But the problem with it comes in two specific points. On their own, these problems aren't a big deal--it's their combined interaction that kinda ruins this game for me. I got up to Chapter 6 on Ronin difficulty, and just... put it down. Uninstalled immediately, because I just wasn't enjoying what the game was…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Classic case of indie game focusing too much in the look and not polishing the gameplay mechanics. It really has a stylish graphic design, it looks like you're playing a film, with the black and white setting and the fixed angles, even though these don't have an organic flow, many times you enter through a passage to the next scene and you lose the character because you run the opposite way, thing that is an important rule in cinema and if they wanted it to be cinematic they should know this.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Visual Fest + Boring Gameplay Rating: 6.5/10 The best part about this game is what you already see - Visuals & Japanese music. There is a complete story with multiple endings (4)! All chapters remain same but it was still a fine narrative. I recommend Japanese voice over English for authentic experience. Problem is.. whole game from start to finish.. all you have to do is Parry, Attack. Parry, Attack. Parry, Attack. Repeat after me: Parry, Attack. Parry, Attack. Yeah! It gets so boring damn,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →They paid more attention on the story and looks rather than the actual fighting aspect, so the tags can be misleading. Go into this game expecting a story not a fighting game

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Looks and sounds absolutey stunning, but in the end it's still a game that needs to be played and that's where it falls apart. Controls are unresponsive, level design gives some great camera shots but is really boring otherwise and bosses are pretty unfun due to the unresponsive controls.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Combat sucks. Half the time when I do a perfect parry my guy just stands there and ignores the attack input. The final boss was landing three hits on me in less than half a second that killed me instantly. Just feels so clunky
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gorgeous graphics, nightmare gameplay. It’s a hollow experience defined by unfair difficulty spikes, awful timings, and controls that feel like wading through mud.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I hate this game, because it makes me feel guilty for being angry at it. There are quite a few negative reviews of this game - and a lot of them are completely right in their assessment on where the game is lacking. Even though, I still think Trek to Yomi does not deserve a thumb down. Overall it is a really good product on every field. The story is simple, but told competently. A protagonist who needs to find balance by going to hell and back, and defeat his mortal enemy. Very samurai-esque,…

unlabelledView post →A Truly Cinematic Samurai Experience (Recommended) Trek to Yomi is less of a traditional video game and more of an interactive classic samurai film. Atmosphere & Visuals: The cinematic presentation is absolute perfection. The grainy, black-and-white art style and fixed camera angles make you feel like you are inside an authentic Akira Kurosawa movie. The environments capture and convey emotion effortlessly. Story: While the core narrative is a straightforward revenge tale, the visual…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Trek to Yomi isn’t purely a 2.5D Samurai hack-and-slash, it’s more like a cinematic work of art, where it heavily gets the influence from movies such as “Sanjuro” and “Throne of Blood’ which utilizes Kurosawa Style. As you play through the game, you can visually see the core elements from Kurosawa being used, including a distinct black-and-white palette throughout the game, along with dramatic cinematography which gives amazing camera shots. Furthermore, as you play through the story, you will…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is truly one of a kind, and it is so obscure I truly am surprised I was even able to find it. The Kurasawa theme, the combat style, the dialogue, voice acting, cinematic scenes, the story, everything. The path i chose in the game too was essentially a personal mirror of my own life, the resonance was part of the reason I liked this game so much, despite that I would say it is an objectively good and also short game. Personal Opinion Overall 10/10.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What an excelent game, i wan´st expecting to be that great..very inspired on the Kurosawa movies..10/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game has hauntingly beautiful visuals but that's about it (as long as you don't look to closely at the character's facial animations). The combat broke the game for me. Uninspired, clunky, simple, and just utterly frustrating. I stunlocked the final boss with using only one combo. If you're searching for a samurai game with a deeper and well thought-out combat, go for First Cut: Samurai Duel instead. If you're looking for something similar than this, then better just get Sifu, it is way…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game starts off strong with a great art style, a setting I loved, solid Japanese voice acting, and an engaging overall theme. However, as the game progresses, it becomes increasingly repetitive, and the story starts to feel less believable. That is just my opinion though, as some players might enjoy the story twists. Each chapter also tends to drag on, mainly because the gameplay does not introduce enough variety to keep it fresh. On top of that, the game bugs out in the final chapter,…

I FINISH TREK TO YOMI WHOOOO 😆 I'm sorry, I'm still on a finishing game high lol Thank you @andresplays.bsky.social and lurkers for dropping by. unlabelledView post →Rating: ★★★ - Okay Time Played: 6 hours Difficulty: Normal Gameplay: - Combat is 2.5D and locked to fixed camera angles per "shot," which looks gorgeous but sometimes works against you. Enemies can attack from off-screen edges and behind areas you can't see coming. - Parry/dodge timing feels inconsistent, especially against dual enemies where the game doesn't clearly telegraph which one to prioritize. - Move variety (sword stances, bow, kunai, gun) exists but the optimal strategy…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Less than an hour in and my thoughts are that this game is beautiful but the core gameplay is complete buns
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Trek to Yomi is a solid and well-executed trip to a black-and-white tale of swords and souls, where a simple but satisfying gameplay is paired with a charming narrative that offers three different endings. Enemy and setting variety could be better, but overall this is a game worthy of your time. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3473399494 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3472881794

The visual language is so strong in this game that despite winding paths, I never felt like I didn't know where to go. The use of lights and small environmental queues act as a communication between the player and the dev. It is done to perfection and keeps the game paced well. The visuals and music come together to deliver a story that is impactful and compelling. Honestly, this game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A good game with an average combat system. Better to play on the Hard mode as the game is very short.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are a few things to like and a lot to dislike about this game. The environments, music and just the look of Trek to Yomi are very well thought out, but pretty much everything else is frustrating. The controls are clunky and for all the options and combos you get there are really only two that are worth while. you can basically go though the game using only the light light heavy and the backwards light heavy combo for one specific opponent. Also the game lets you get used to the combat…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Trek to Yomi. I hated the Game and I did not have fun. So why a thumbs up? Because the Game is actually good and all the misery that I suffered was of my own making. Let's talk about it. Trek to Yomi is a 2D (sometimes "3D" for exploration) side scrolling Action Game set in feudal Japan in the Edo Period. The Game is completely in Black and White, probably as a nod to Akira Kurosawa. If you like Samurai Movies, you know who that is. The direction of the Game is very good, Cutscenes,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Perma STUN and later chapter checkpoints are few and far between. Control suck especially throwing dagger and dodging. Depth is hard to figure out in a few cases. Game suck overall don't buy.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just beat Trek to Yomi for our next @dadsgamereview.bsky.social podcast. GORGEOUS game and a tribute to the old Kurosawa Samurai films. Fighting tho a little rough at times did make ya feel like a badass. Throughly enjoyed it. Review up Saturday.
unlabelledView post →Good game. Looks great. Had no issues. No crashes. No lag. Ran smooth. A bit repetitive and easy. Combat is kind of meh. A few dull parts that I kind of just wanted to end. But overall, a good game. If there was something between a thumbs up and a thumbs down, Id give it to this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Trek to Yomi is a visually striking, cinematic side-scroller that pays homage to classic samurai films in the most artistic way possible. Presented entirely in black and white with film grain and dramatic camera angles, every frame feels like a moving Kurosawa scene. The combat is simple but deliberate, emphasizing timing and precision over button-mashing. While the gameplay isn't overly complex, the atmosphere, story, and emotional weight more than make up for it. The narrative explores themes…

unlabelledView post →Visually gorgeous, but leaves lots to be desired gameplay-wise: - The combat just doesn't feel responsive, and parrying doesn't feel specially right. - Sometimes the camera is too far to see the enemies' attacks properly. - It takes so long to dodge and it does not go through enemies, so I don't see how it can be useful in combat. - The health / stamina UI is so small and cornered in the bottom left of the screen, and you often need to focus on an enemy pretty far from it, so I had to play…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Offline Project Backlog Game 4 - Trek to Yomi A short little side scrolling samurai game. A pretty middling story with some basic gameplay. It felt like there could have been more depth to both. Even the B&W aesthetic worked against it in the longrun. I wanted to like this more. 5 relics out of 10
unlabelledView post →As much as I love a good Samurai cinematic game. This is not Ghost of Tsushima. The mechanics are fine for what's needed. The enemy type is too repetitive. There's no breaks. No downtime. It's just fight, fight, fight. It's fighting is side scrolling, and the "exploration" is isometric. The camera is fixed, but it's fine. It's all in black and white is an homage to Akira Kurosawa films. This whole game is an homage. I might finish sometime, but it's really boring, really fast.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Combat becomes quite boring once you unlock certain attacks that leave the enemy open for a finisher. I'm just spamming those and instakilling them with RB... Also the story and scenarios are not very impressive/interesting and I'm on chapter 5/7.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Games are the only medium that lets you step inside a dying man’s final reel, swing a katana through Kurosawa’s ghost, and still feel the weight of every bad decision echoing across lifetimes. Trek to Yomi doesn’t just homage samurai cinema—it drags you into the black-and-white grain and forces you to live the philosophy: honor is heavy, revenge is a circle, and death is never the end, only another corridor. You play Hiroki, a young samurai who watches his world burn, then spends the rest of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cool game with fun sword mechanics and intriguing plot. However, not giving an option to replay game from different chapters (or just something like new game+) is just a horrible misunderstanding. Like, you can collect almost 10 different collectables per chapter, and while playing you can see all of these you already got, but after completing the game when you missed some of them you cannot replay certain levels just to get the missing ones back? Like, what?
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So, I finally finished replaying Trek To Yomi. This is the second game I've beaten in 2026. Overall, I had a pretty good time with it. I found the combat to be pretty fun and I really dig both the music and aesthetic of the game. The story was alright though nothing amazing. I do have a few gripes.
unlabelledView post →Very beautiful game. I recommend playing it on harder setting available when starting to enjoy it more. Still as many comments say, it has some issues, like it gets a bit repetitive due to lack of enemy variety and combat although deep on paper lacks some clarity and feels a bit shallow, so I ended up doing the same combos over and over. But overall is pretty fun, I really recommend it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Trek to Yomi is a 2.5D, short (~3h long) side-scroller set during the Edo period of feudal Japan about a samurai in and his sense of duty. It is a game with incredible art direction, and rather awful gameplay. There’s a significant focus on cinematic and “realistic” aspect of sword combat where a single strike is enough to defeat someone, unfortunately it hasn’t translated well into a fun gameplay. The game’s controls often feel clunky and unresponsive while the whole combo system is very…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I tried this but holy ♥♥♥♥—I finished Chapter 6 but since Chapter 4 every time the "boss" shows up i think "please just let this game end" The story started out cool, i was very interested on where it was going. I tought it would be very straightforward, with me getting revenge or something and I was ok with that Then, between Chapter 3 and 4, the story went on a direction i didn't expect I would probably enjoy it if the gameplay itself wasn't so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ annoying There is no…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What truly elevates Trek to Yomi beyond a traditional action-adventure is its masterful cinematography. This game doesn’t just borrow from classic samurai cinema, it honors it, studies it, and then recreates it with stunning precision. Every shot feels deliberately composed, as if the developers placed the camera not to show you the world, but to frame a story within it. The use of fixed camera angles is one of the game’s greatest artistic choices. Instead of following the player traditionally,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A very interesting and atmospheric game set in the era of Japanese samurai. The sword combat is exceptionally well crafted, offering plenty of diverse fighting techniques. The black-and-white visuals give the game a unique atmosphere, although I personally would have preferred it in full color. Still, it’s definitely worth giving this game a try!
