Developer Lucasfim
Star Wars: X-Wing is a space simulation video game, the first of the X-Wing combat flight simulation games series. The player's character flies starfighters, including the X-wing, for the Rebel Alliance. The narrative precedes and parallels the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Designed by Lawrence Holland and Edward Kilham's Totally Games for LucasArts, X-Wing is one of the first games to use 3D polygon… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

X-Wing was a formative part of my gaming life, a huge influence on the kinds of games I would grow to love. In the mid-nineties this was the dream for young Star Wars fanatics like myself, a technical simulator that put you in the cockpit of your favorite Alliance starships right from the films. It was also brutally hard and absolutely unforgiving at times, something that didn’t feel entirely out of place with…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Make your life easier and grab the XWVM mod(basically, this game ported to the Unity engine.) Easy to setup and can use modern day controllers. Peak Star Wars flight simming.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Download the XWVM mod. Super easy to install and setup.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Yes, it runs on a modern Windows 10 System. You can configure your Joystick (althought it's a tedious thing to do). For all intense and purposes it's a playable game. But, no, I would not recommend playing it. Today, that is. It really doesn't look that good despite everything that might still be positive about it. It's 640x480x16 resolution. On a 4k screen that looks more like LEGO bricks. Like many of you I've played this game way back when and enjoyed it A LOT ! Keep that memory.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game doesn't work with a modern joystick. The game doesn't map the joystick buttons correctly. I spent 5+ hours trying to get this working so Steam won't refund me, they say I've "played" it to long.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have been playing on the steam deck. The game runs out of the box and can be modded for better graphics and 3D hardware. It took me a while to figure out a good control layout but after that everything was sweet. It has been wild playing this game on the go. Last time I played this was on a 486 back in the 90s and you needed a joystick as mouse support was not a thing. The story is great. It took me 30 hours to finish the main game Tours 1 to 3. Eventually I’ll play all the DLC (included…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Classic game, one of the best of its genre. Very much outdated, but the gameplay is still solid. It was tremendously tough to get into it (for a kid), but once past the lurning curve, it was such a joyful experience! But to enjoy this game now, you'd definitely need nostalgia. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3032051148 http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2890430905
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The heart of this game isn't just the dogfighting; it’s the power management. This is where the true "calibration" happens. You are constantly balancing energy between your lasers, shields, and engines. Need to close the gap? Divert everything to the engines. Getting shredded by a TIE Interceptor? Shift that power to the rear shields. It’s a rhythmic, technical dance that makes every successful mission feel like a genuine tactical victory. There’s zero "friction" here—the controls are tight,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Still great. Plays buttery smooth, at any rez, and still is a blast. Mission design is fantastic -- shift power the engines, and get those tie bombers, or you're gonna lose. You'll need to mix it up a little, with the keyboard and the gamepad. There aren't really enough buttons. Not much of a problem, really -- think of it as a real X-Wing simulator, where not all the controls are on the stick itself. There are hardware wrapper mods available for playing in 640x480 (or higher)…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I remember playing this when I was younger without a joystick or gamepad, and it worked great. fast forward to now and...nope. Its busted. Joystick is mandatory for special edition, and classic is just dosbox but broken keyboard support. This is not the X-Wing you are looking for....
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It doesn't work on modern OS and is essentially unplayable, even if you do have a controller. It's essentially a non functional game being sold here. There are a source port/mod to fix the game, but I can't be bothered to deal with that. I appreciate the fact you can get the game/files legally at least but still...
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is very fun but it's hard for me because im stilll young
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's X-wing. A classic us old guys remember. All that needs to be said.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bro this is the ORIGINAL ♥♥♥♥ I'm talkin before Jar Jar and baby anakin and all that weird ♥♥♥♥ with death sticks and CGI everything I'm talking x wings and it's 1977 and no one gives a ♥♥♥♥ man this game still holds up it just looks like 1994 but I'd rather have 1994 Star Wars that 2020 Star Wars and not bc of the SJWs star wars was always literally anti-fascist look at the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ imperial helms they're killing those sons of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ none stop
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The greatest game ever made
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played this in the 90's, and playing it again all these years later is even better. Its so much fun, makes you feel like a starfighter for real. Remember to save a backup of your character manually to avoid being captured by the empire and losing all of your points. Do it after every mission, and also verify game files every time too or the game might crash.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Star Wars: X-Wing is the game that turned me into a punchable nerd. You play as you, a pilot of the Rebel Alliance to restore the Republic. And I'm going to tell the Empire on you. Originally released in 1993 for MS-DOS, the X-wing game has been kind of difficult to look up because some Nerd board game company released a table top game called X-wing in 2012. So Now I have to be specific in my search when I need to look up certain info. I still have the CD-ROM version of the game, so now…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazing game, but don't even bother if you don't have a joystick/controller. I learned that the hard way.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →X-Wing Special Edition not longer runs on my iMac after the most recent update. All That happens when I start it is I get a large white square on my screen and the sound.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't let the playtime I have on Steam fool you. I have put hours upon hours into this game in the mid-90s on my potato of a computer back then. This game and the OG Wing Commander games were my jam growing up. They really don't make games like this these days. The mission complexity, gameplay and the top-notch immersion this game provides goes well beyond the outdated graphics. If you are looking for a great space-flight sim and an even better Star Wars experience (Before Disney and EA…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game isn't running properly since the update.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game would probably go in my top ten favorites. The graphics are not good, but the strong point in this game comes in the form of strategy. The missions start out a little slow, but after the second or third one you will be hooked. I would not recommend this game to players that like to rush into action without a plan, but then again, there are different play-styles for everyone.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →X-Wing was awesome. A game so good it inspired a series of novels. The only reason that X-Wing isn't hailed as the greatest space combat game of all time is that the sequel, TIE Fighter, is even better. Unlike many old games, going back and playing it doesn't leave you feeling empty. It is still awesome! And hard. This is no arcade shooter - you need to manage lasers. shields and speed. You need to think about what your wingmen are doing. In some missions you will be continually dodging…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A timeless classic. Legendary space combat simulator, not just in the DOS times, starting one of the best, soulful Star Wars game series and helping establish arguably a golden era for Star Wars PC game development. Sadly, it has been neglected for a long, long time with no hope for improvement in the near future. Although much less appreciated Star Wars games have been, surprisingly, retouched, remastered and otherwise brought to digital circulation, giving a legal means to acquire them…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Better than DCS World in every way.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I loved these games 30 years ago. Hoped for another great retro experience... Started the Special Edition: Music was a choppy mess and the game crashed 5-6 minutes into the training mission. Tried the "Collectors Edition" (original graphics): Music was fine but controlling the game was impossible due to stick drift. Sadly not worth the bother!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Selling 30 years old game for 10$ and not giving it keyboard support is just ridiculous...
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An absolute classic sim. It has some flaws that weren't solved until Tie Fighter came out. For example, not being able to tell if mission objectives have been failed, meaning you may have failed the mission with no indicator to tell you so. But this game spawned Tie Fighter, and inspired so many other games. If you come in realizing it has imperfections, and some annoying limitations, you'll have a great time.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love this classic to death, the graphics are dated but the game play holds up. There are 3 versions here (original, CD-version and special edition), all of which work but I recommend the special edition, which adds some (but not all) of the important QoL upgrades from later in the series like pressing Enter to match speed with your target. And you can install graphics mods to make it look slightly less dated and get it to match your modern monitor's native resolution. TIE Fighter is the gold…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Looking forward to playing this again on my current PC. I aced this game back in the 90s loved every minute. It kept the Star Wars Universe alive when there wasn't much content available.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gameplay: 7/10 Story: 8/10 Graphics: 8/10 (for the time) Performance: 9/10 (again, for the time) Overall: 8/10 This is one of those moments where I wish I could make two reviews. One review where I rate Star Wars X-Wing Special Edition with nostalgia blinders, and another where I judge the game by today's standards of a space sim. For its time, there was nothing really like Star Wars X-Wing, except maybe Wing Commander. But it's very difficult to recommend Star Wars X-Wing with today's…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →always loved this game , however i dont like the fact i can not play with the mouse .....it really is bad....they should fix that
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great classic Star Wars and space flight sim. Haven't found any other games to scratch the same itch. Other than Tie-fighter.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →X-Wing was one of the best space sims ever made. Take on the role of a Rebel pilot and fulfill your career through a series of campaign missions, fly the iconic X-Wing, A-Wing and Y-Wing fighters. Take on TIE fighters, bombers, interceptors, corvettes, even Star Destroyers. The game featured rich simulator aspects including power and shield management and commands for your wingmen. Unfortunately, even though this is a remaster of sorts, it just doesn't work properly under Windows 10,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →unable to play on windows 10. mouse doesn't follow cursor and behaves erratically. DO NOT BUY
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Classic! The good old times! You should have a joystick and be willing to learn quite some keyboard keys, but it's absolutely worth it. I prefer playing the original or Collectors CD versions for the better sound effects and the retro feeling, but if your eyes can't bear with it, use the special edition with improved 3d texture graphics, but inferior sound.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Crashes and is not playable on a modern PC :-(

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Was a great game when it was released and is still great today
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →X-Wing Special Edition includes the original 1993 game, the 1994 CD Collectors editions (including Voice Actors from the Original Trilogy i.e. Admiral Ackbar) and 1998 Special Edition. The 1993 game was MSDOS and the subsequent games were Windows. This is the first game in the X-Wing Series: it was followed by TIE Fighter, X-Wing vs TIE Fighter and finally X-Wing Alliance. X-Wing is generally considered less balanced than the subsequent game (TIE Fighter) and a such is less forgiving for new…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is amazing. I beat it when it came out and recently saw that it was here on steam and had to have it (especially for the price). It's a full blown space combat simulator set in the classic Star Wars Era. It's very solid. The graphics got a much needed update and it comes with the B-wing missions (which was originally an expansion pack on 3.5" diskettes) plus new missions. It runs like a dream on my current recently purchased game box. I highly recommend it to anyone from the original…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can actively feel my college sophomore grades slip down the tube again. It wasn't as good as I remembered--it was better. Fifth year of college, here we go again!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →STAR WARS: X-Wing Special Edition is one of the defining space combat simulators ever created and remains an impressive example of how deeply immersive licensed games could become even during the early years of PC gaming. Rather than treating the Star Wars universe as simple visual decoration, the game fully commits to the fantasy of becoming a Rebel Alliance pilot fighting against the Empire during the Galactic Civil War. Every mission, cockpit system, briefing, and battle is designed to make…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Awesome game and way better with the XWVM mod. No pixel mush, new game engine, new everything, soundeffects, music, old cutscenes, "3th person view", no fiddeling, native controller support, TrackIR, VR, hop in your seat and start your engines. Steam play time will not be recorded with the mod. Tie fighter support is coming soon. The future looks great with more mods on the horizon. There are more fiddel mods around for TIe-fighter and X-Wing Alliance: - TIE Fighter Total Conversion - XWA…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →„That was one in a million.“ Along with Star Wars Rebel Assault and Command & Conquer Red Alert, it was this game that made me realize back in the mid 90s that the PC is the superior gaming platform. In the meantime since then, Rebel Assault has turned from a guilty pleasure to one of the worst games ever made and Red Alert is still the greatest RTS game, but got some serious competition by its own successors and the likes of Age of Empires 2. The X-Wing series on the other hand is still…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →a nostalgic classic with blocky graphics that takes me right back to the early 90's! still a challenging game all these decades later
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's what George Lucas would've wanted
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was the first game I played to death back in the day when it was first released. I must have thousands and thousands of hours logged on the original as there was nothing else like it (well until TIE fighter which was even better). The trouble is (and thus the downvote) it's not unique anymore. There are several modern SW space shooters that just look and play a lot better. If you've played Squadrons for example, this will feel like a pixelated mess now, as it does for me (it even felt…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What can I say - it's a classic!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Reviewing games I played a long time ago: I discovered the X-Wing series with the last one, X-Wing: Alliance which I adored at the time. The original one I played later, and never had the same impact with me, but it was still great, mainly the story which is, in my opinion the main strenght of this series.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Comparatively to other X-Wing and flight/space-sim Star Wars games, STAR WARS - X-Wing Special Edition just doesn't hold up as well graphically or technically. Surprisingly it still runs well on Windows 10 in 2021 (unlike many of the other Star Wars classics) but I generally just found the game to be not as fun or innovative (if I am allowed to say that) as some of the other classics. I do think there are people who would enjoy this game but with so many flight/space-sim Star Wars games out,…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the game that made me into the beast I am today in Star Wars: Squadrons. The nostalgia trip is real.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My favorite Star Wars game ever. If you have a Joystick for Flight simulators and Squadrons isn't your thing? Look no further than this classic!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is Star Wars to the core.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Classic Star Wars starfighter game that started it all. Complete nostalgia overload.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just like I remember. They don't make games like this anymore.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A bit dated in places, but definitely worth playing. Just be warned that your cursor isn't visible by default in the special edition, you have to right click on the game in steam, go to properties, and enter -softwarecursor under launch options to make it visible.
