The Talented Mr. Ripley
Tom Ripley is a calculating young man who believes it's better to be a fake somebody than a real nobody. Opportunity knocks in the form of a wealthy U.S. shipbuilder who hires Tom to travel to Italy to bring back his playboy son, Dickie. Ripley worms his way into the idyllic lives of Dickie and his girlfriend, plunging into a daring scheme of duplicity, lies and murder. From TMDB

In the film The Talented Mr. Ripley, Dickie Greenleaf tells Tom Ripley he's going to take him to Battistoni in Rome (and indeed, if you go today, it's a great experience).

This film is from "Ripley's Game." It was adapted again as the great 2002 film starring John Malkovich. #TheAmericanFriend #TCMParty

Of these Purple Noon is the most similar to the novel, whereas the 99 film tones down the psychopathic nature of Ripley. 🕶️🔪🕴️ #filmsky #booksky

unlabelledView post →Just finished "The Talented Mr Ripley". I dug the recent netflix adaptation, which prompted me to watch the 90s movie, and then I had to read the source material to see how much of either interpretation was in the text. Highsmith did a great job making Ripley ambiguous on most fronts! 😆 #BookSky📚

unlabelledView post →It wasn’t quite a cinema experience as we were watching The Talented Mr Ripley in a tent by a loud wine fair, but it was quite the experience in a room full of people in front of me who’d never seen the film and proclaimed in shock at some of the unexpected scenes.

unlabelledView post →Finally finished reading The Talented Mr Ripley. I feel the same way I did when watching the movie; how he got away with it all and left a trail of broken people behind him. I think that's part of the reason why the books are so successful, because you have to admit that it could happen here. 🚣

unlabelledView post →Like, it definitely owes a lot to that film. I also happen to think The Talented Mr. Ripley is a better film (although I did enjoy Saltburn). But words have meaning? You can't just go around calling a film a "scene for scene" clone of another film when it just tackles the same ideas/themes.

I last watched Purple Noon, the 1960 French-Italian adaptation of The Talented Mr. Ripley with him in the title role. He embodied Ripley to the core. I should do a nostalgic Delon movie marathon.

Matt Damon, Jude Law & Gwyneth Paltrow last night, and you can see why Andrew Scott et al. thought it worthwhile to do it all over again, but properly. Charles Taylor (presumably neither the philosopher nor the warlord) in Salon got it bang to rights:
unlabelledView post →I had never seen The Talented Mr. Ripley before and I had heard the queerness was subtext and ambiguous. That was a lie. It's a super gay horny fantasy movie about a straight guy who leads a queer person on (or a deeply closeted gaslighted) getting their comeuppance. I loved it.
unlabelledView post →TRIVIA: Anthony Minghella's wife produced the film and used to watched the dailies at home each evening. Minghella would watch over her shoulder and was so impressed with Jude Law's performance he would cast him the following year as Dickie Greenleaf in ‘The Talented Mr Ripley’. (IMDB) 🖤
unlabelledView post →Saltburn was an interesting object until that twist at the end which didn't work for me & imo made the movie compare unfavorably to The Talented Mr Ripley. Kind of disappointing, up until then it was at least ... interesting? I dunno. Barry Keogan (sp?) is fun to watch, tho.
