I completed this game on the Xbox a loooong time ago, and seeing the Mixed reviews on Steam, I could only assumed the game was poorly ported to PC. Now I'm replaying it... nope! I honestly don't get the hate, I suspect this may just come down to folks expecting more Souls-aligned gameplay/design, and not getting it. Brief summary, this is in the action-rpg field, and does contain many of the trappings of Soulslike games. Fairly challenging gameplay (I'd say this leans a little easier than…

Is it as good as Darkborne? No. Is it just a rip-off of Blood Souls? No. Is it a decent game with a similar "what is this messed up world why is everyone insane/trying to kill me ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ I just lost 20,000 totally-not-souls" atmosphere and a couple unique mechanics that make it both familiar and fresh? Yes. 8/10

Very underrated Souls-like. The combat is super satisfying especially with the crazy looking finishers. The setting and story is really interesting too, but my main complaint is that since most of it takes place in a big factory, a lot of the scenery looks the same which makes it REALLY easy to get lost. However, I have a horrible sense of direction so maybe that's just a personal problem! It was well worth the $8 or so that I paid for it.

Very underrated, I find this way more interesting than Elden Ring. Incredible labyrinthian level design, unique limb-targeting combat, surprisingly deep RPG systems, and some of the best industrial horror vibes I've seen. The game has tons of weird ideas that actually feel like someone had a vision instead of just copying Dark Souls. The combat can be janky as hell and the difficulty occasionally turns into straight-up ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, but once you understand the systems, it clicks beautifully.…

I can really empathize with how the filmmakers are feeling right now. When the Jap ver of our German game The Surge came out, it felt surreal. The game is heavily inspired by Jap sci-fi. Underrated game and may even be better in some aspects than its inspiration. Surge is a Souls-like game. It's not very creative these days, but man, this is an amazing game on its own. It's a Souls-like, so there is respawning, stamina management, and such, but it offers so much more. Pros * Amazing limb dismemberment system giving more choice and agency to the player * Lowkey horror industrial setting * Wide variety of choice in player arsenal * Amazing level design (not…

This review is based on 100% completion and 46.8 hours of gameplay. Recommendation: Would I recommend the game? I would. This isn't a bad little game, especially for a souls-like. It is on the easier side, and while it's not an amazing game with deep, well-crafted mechanics, it was fun for the time I spent with it. That said, it is not without its faults, and I do think there are a decent number of issues that, if addressed, could have made this game something really special. Firstly, the…

Unnecessary Looks good, works generally well (optimization is great), but it's a slow repetitive souls-like mecha game. So boring, so poorly written, so unentertaining. And the hitboxes are often mile away from you, so dodging is purely random. It's not bad, it's just bland.

TL;DR: 5/10 There's some ideas here that I liked and hadn't seen in other Souls-likes - it definitely puts it's own spin on the genre - but ultimately the game feels very tedious and I just didn't have a good time, though the reasons why are largely subjective. I'd give it a neutral rating, but since that's not a thing on Steam, I'm leaning more towards the thumbs down. --- Let's start with the cool stuff I quite liked: You can target separate limbs, which will have different defences…

I tried very hard to get into this game. I loved the surge 2 and i love unique takes on the soulslike genre, mainly ones that take place in anything other than medieval times. This game just sucks the life out of you with little to no reward. Enemies are tedious to fight, the neat lock-on and dismember system is clunky, attacks across the board are slow and cumbersome, damage taken is extreme, the zones are extremely difficult to navigate, and finally, its just not fun. Nope. Just nope. Terrible controls. You dodge in one direction and the character dodges in another. And don’t even get me started on the character randomly freezing in place despite having full stamina. Is it fear, or does he just really love the enemies’ equipment so much that he stops to admire it? I honestly don’t know. I’ll still finish the game. I’m not giving up! But I’m never giving 'The Surge' a positive review until they fix these clunky controls.

I stopped playing this game because it was frustrating rather than challenging. The game mechanics are unique, as enemies can be attacked on each body part and you can loot armor from each body part. The downside of this game is the clunky parry and dodge mechanics. Furthermore, the vast map actually feels confusing rather than sparking curiosity to explore further. I’ve played "Blasphemous", which also features a vast map that players must unlock through exploration, but at least that game was…

An exhausting labyrinthian game that does not respect your time. Level designs are incredibly recursive and annoying, combat is repetitive and clunky. Most of your gear and upgrades are worthless. The story is interesting, but also a disjointed mess that takes too much effort to piece together. And your reward is only vague answers leading up to a disappointing boss fight. It's not worth the slog that this game becomes.

just too annoying, i've played so many dark souls games. This just sucks, enemies one shot you the whole time; not just the bosses. hitting you with a quick move that is impossible to block since it's a counter, does over half your health even with multiple upgrades to your health. This game had a real chance. The PC version is rife with problems for newer PC builds. If you have CPU or GPU 2018 or newer, the game will work great from I gather on the forums. If you have PC like mine: 12-700k RTX 3080 12gb 32gb DR4 3600mhz RAM Don't touch this game or its sequel. Apparently, you have disable cores and reconfig system files for the game in order to play it. Very cool limb cutting with unique animations per limb and weapon type to unlock blueprints and gain materials for crafting. The leveling system is also very interesting through collecting tech scraps (souls), implants and upgrading power core. Normal enemies can take you out in 2 - 3 hits. doesn't matter if you have upgraded your gear to Level 3 or more. 2 - 3 hits is it all it takes from a normal mob. when you dodge you can't jump through an enemy if you jump in to it. More of a Dark Souls 2 type vibe where the juice to the game is in the areas and attempting to navigate them cleanly. Also, everything hits like a truck :). Finding a high quality arm or leg to boost your stats and eventually collecting a full set plus the cool weapon you saw an npc using and feeling a noticeable surge is power is very satisfying.
