Somehow this game looks & feels more awful than the original. The graphics look like it was baked inside a potato, and the combat just feels..wrong. I don't know how to put it. Compared to the original, this is a huge downgrade.

After trying twice now to get into this game I am simply at the point where I don't think that I will ever really enjoy this game and am recommending that others should generally avoid it. The game opens with an overbearing tutorial. The set/visual environmental design is mostly uninteresting, looking like a generic "futuristic prison," similar to how you've probably seen them across so, so many different "modern" video games. And it just hits you over the head with big popups telling you what…

Considering how much I loved the first game, this one surpasses it in every way. Many aspects have been improved, such as combat: it’s more agile and fluid here, with better moves, more attack options, and directional parries. I’d say the parry is the biggest defensive innovation, since you can block in a specific direction to launch a devastating counterattack if you time it right, something that’s very satisfying to master. There’s a greater variety of environments, moving away from the…

Sigh, I've said it once for The Surge, and I'm gonna say it again for The Surge 2: Great concept! Poor execution. I LOVE how The Surge 2 understood what makes Dark Souls so good this time, even if they're shallow compared to Dark Souls proper: You have character customization, you can backstab enemies, parrying is a strong & viable strategy, your gear can be upgraded to 10 levels, permanent stat upgrades by simply leveling up, better weapon variety, and ONLINE CONNECTIVITY that allows…

A decent souls-like marred by bugs, annoying camera, poor map design in later stages and some poorly designed or overly bullet-spongey bosses that take far too long to kill (I like short, fast, lethal boss battles in which you can be creative and fight a duel, not drawn out multi phase slogs where you chip a boss to death or need to hit a 'weak point', and there are far too many of these latter bosses in the game). Oh, and in the later stages the checkpoints and shortcuts are stupuidly far…

I loved the first Surge when I played it on console. Sci-Fi Souls-like which was fairly unique at the time, considering that the game was functional, and scratched that itch. Then a few years after the sequel's release, I finally got my hands on the Surge 2. It is indisputably a better game. The "dismemberment = loot/upgrade mats" thing is the same, the bosses are more interesting, but there's more enemies, loot, and the levels have a higher quality feel to them than the first game's. Not to…

Do yourself a favor and don't play this game. Unless you would like some more grind for your grind. With a side of grind. Did I mention there's grind? You will walk through the same area 10 times, and then come back to that area later and walk through the same area 10 times again, only this time with more obnoxious environment lighting.

Completed 100% Playthroughs : 2 Overall Grade : 7.5/10 This is the definition of a game that didn't really need to exist. The original Surge game had a lot of charm for being a lesser known game and it was for the most part a unique and polished experience. This game improved on a few things while making some strange and disappointing choices. The positives : The combat was improved from the original, it's overall faster and less clunky. This is a good Soulslike game but a dire sequel to The Surge, and it is such an incredibly bad sequel that shares so little DNA with the first that its impossible to recommend imho. I'll talk a lot about the narrative and writing as thats my biggest gripe by far, before turning to mechanics and gameplay. First though; if you never played The Surge (I recommend it) and enjoy or tolerate generic Marvel-like millennial quirky dialogue and are looking for a soulslike, this is a decent pick for…

So The Surge 2 introduced blocking mechanics with indicators from which direction you should block. Unfortunately this new machnic is MANDATORY to use, but only after a certain point. I've spend hours to kill a boss and got wrecked by mechanics that I clearly dodged, but since I have to block it, it hit anyway. I am in favour of adding new mechanics but not if they are mandatory and flip the entire gameflow from the first game (and 10h of this game which I went easily without blocking) on the…

Muddy visuals while also being shiny all the time, walking everywhere for the sake of "level design" and while the combat isn't tough the real boss is the camera. Even when you're not locked on your camera will still swing wildly as if you are. Interesting concept but I understand why this game is consistently 90% off.

I first played Surge 2 a few years ago, but on an old comp that really wasn't up to the task. I have a newer machine now and decided to replay it and I'm glad I did. I liked the first Surge and this one expands on it, it's bigger, with more environments and more bosses. But it retains the essential Soulslike mechanics from the first game and that's it's best feature. The story here is pretty thin, typical for a lot of these games, but the combat and looting are the real draw and make up for…

It's not a bad game in itself but the surge 1 was much better. This one has bugs where some quests cannot be completed and they lock you out of the good ending. I even lost hours of progress once because the game didn't save despite telling me it was saving, multiple times. Story wise, it's so much worse. Graphics also have a ton of issues with lighting. Gameplay is also much much worse. You will also spend half your time backtracking, lost, having to look it up on google like hundreds of…

Released before Jedi Fallen Order, yet people said TS2 was trash because it "stole" the limb cutting system, even tho this game did it first. The best smaller budget souls game of all time, even with its mistakes. Decently packed map, LOTS of weapons and armours and an infinite choices for your build. LITERALLY. It's pretty incredible how The Surge 2 can look so different from the first one, when it's actually so similar. The game repeats the same mistakes trying to fix them, which results in something that is new, but feels familiar. Thankfully, this sequel can also rely on the strengths of its predecessor. Everything that was good about the first game is back, and has sometimes been improved ! Armor sets and weapons are still unlocked by targeting specific limbs of the enemies carrying them, and…

This is my favorite game of all time. I have well over 200 hours on it on console since its release. The story is engaging, told through in-game cutscenes, audiologs, and environmental details which draw you into the story of Jericho city and the nanites infesting it. It's not without it's flaws, but I enjoyed The Surge 2. It's a pretty casual-friendly soulslike with, what is for most of the game, a relatively fun gear-farming mini-game. Dismembering enemies for access to new gear feels novel and fun for the first 2/3s of the game, but just as the novelty of the gear system begins to fade, so too does the pacing and rhythm of the game. It offers New Game+ which would be really cool if the general game loop begins to fall flat as you run out of new gear to…

The Surge 2 has some features that are nicely polished, but overall I felt it lost it's identity in comparison to the 1st. The 1st game was very sci-fi horror focused in a setting that made you want to explore, investigate, and learn about the story. The decision to make the 2nd one more "open world" was a poor one. The setting was boring, uninspiring, and frankly lame in comparison to the 1st. The parry mechanic change was an interesting one. In the 1st, you can definitely abuse parry and…

The standout is the map design—shortcuts looping back to bonfires are well thought out and satisfying to unlock. A weird sequel. While initially I wasn't liking it, it eventually won me over. Starting with a weaker, less cinematic introduction — you can only see the actual introduction in New Game+ for some reason — it is immediately evident how unimpressive its graphics are compared to the previous game. While having a nice visual variety, I would say this game is rather ugly to look at. Bad UI decisions don't help matters. Neither do lackluster combat, control issues, audio log "story", annoying voice acting, and frankly mind-numbing enemy designs. The boss designs broke me, though. Boring. Unlike The Surge 1, the sequel adds a directional parry system that manages to muck up the whole affair. Dodging is effectively useless except against the rare unblockable attack (which aren't telegraphed in any way), and parrying requires you to first stop what you're doing and block so that you can parry. This means every encounter, from start to finish, boils down to holding block and baiting out parries, since parrying is not only safer, but rewards you with heals. Counters also do…
