It stands as one of the most eccentric studio horror releases of the 1970s, blending high-fashion New York atmosphere, psychological dread, and a surreal descent into demonic carnage. #horror #horrormovies

The confluence where the Moskva River meets the canal, and the city becomes a panorama. Peter gazes outward, and we gaze at him. #filmphotography #blackandwhite #landscape #cityscape #35mm #bw

Excluding PSYCHO, THE BIRDS, and JAWS, it’s now their oldest horror movie. Everybody watch it and we can totally game their algorithm. #FilmSky

The novel is based in part on some of his short stories including "The Sentinel" (1948).

From Variety’s review at the time - "The Sentinel is a grubby, grotesque excursion into religioso psychodrama, notable for uniformly poor performances by a large cast of familiar names and direction that is hysterical and heavy-handed." #horrorsky

unlabelledView post →I'm not saying I found another piece of the jackass's plagiarism, but the boarding house in the 1977 horror film The Sentinel bears a lot of vibes-similarity to the boarding house Rose Walker lives in in the "A Doll's House" arc of Sandman.
unlabelledView post →I recently watched the horror film The Sentinel (1977). While it was silly and boring there seemed like there could have been something there. Enter the 1974 novel. At 39% of the way through I know I’m wasting my time. The plot is derivative and the protagonist is tiresome. I’m done. #horrorsky

unlabelledView post →I have for some reason never heard of the 1977 film 'The Sentinel'. We just started watching it and my husband was first annoyed I kept shouting out the cast credit names, and then agreeing they were worthy of surprise. When 'Jerry Orbach' appeared we both passed out. Marlowe had to revive us.

unlabelledView post →Unrelatedly, The Sentinel is a pretty decent flick! It has a half-dozen Future Very Famous People in extremely small roles, which is fun. It has peak late-70s sex for the sake of being shocking, which gets a bit tiresome? But the overall film is a treat.

unlabelledView post →BUUUT both the film and the book are inspired by the Clarke story "The Sentinel," about an alien structure on the Moon which humanity accidentally destroys, which Kubrick optioned from Clarke. so arguably the film, although not an adaption of the novel, is an adaptation of the *story*.

The greatest horror in this film is the misuse of a numerous cast of great actors from several generations whose efforts are wholly wasted here. unlabelledView post →The Sentinel, a 2000s thriller with all the 2000s things (affair, certain type of movie logic, unrealism, "interesting" use of technology, the look etc.), but it was engaging and entertaining enough, largely due to good cast and just its premise and execution. Solid. #FilmSky #MovieSky
