The film involves an actress lifting babies out of the cabbage patch by one arm and setting them on the ground (clunk!) That's the narrative. Okay, if we want to squint and say that it is a narrative film...

Year 2, Day #174 "The Vanishing" (George Sluizer/1988) I'm told this film is absolutely chilling with an ending that will stick with you. I wouldn't know though, as I have not watched it yet. I've got to watch this one soon!

Imagine the Dutch movie THE VANISHING narrated by the kidnapper, the boyfriend, and a self-absorbed God, where most of the key events take place offscreen.

unlabelledView post →The 1973 film with Christopher Lee is a British folk horror masterpiece and my personal favorite horror film (tied with the original 1988 Dutch version of The Vanishing); the 2006 film with Nic Cage is a hilarious slapstick comedy and trash classic

unlabelledView post →‘Spoorloos’ aka ‘The Vanishing’ is so scary in many ways, not least is the kidnapping scene and the background sound. In the American remake it’s overlaid with music, but in the Dutch original you can hear the sound of people playing in the rest area… as poor Johanna ter Steege is kidnapped.
unlabelledView post →At the end of a screening of the European version of The Vanishing a man turned to the audience*, who were all contemplating what we’d just seen, and said, “Don’t do what the guy in the film did.” He walked out. It broke the tension. *It wasn’t a packed cinema. Just the man, my friend and me.

Inherit The Wind was on my Nana's movie list & was a great courtroom flick. The Vanishing started ok but nosedived 2/3 of the way through. Not recommended. #Letterboxd

There is only one that permanently fucked me up and it is The Vanishing (Spoorloos) from 1988. Great film, but I really wish I hadn't watched.

unlabelledView post →Name the worst ever film remake. 🎖️ Original: Spoorloos (aka The Vanishing, Netherlands, 1988) 💩 Remake: The Vanishing (Hollywood, 1993) If not the worst ever remake, still the one that bothers me the most. The remake leaves out all the parts of the plot that make the original great.

Everybody knows the final scene (right?), but I did not remember that the 90 mins before are also phenomenal.

Gallium has a lower surface tension than mercury, which you can see visually. That said, I'm glad they made the effort rather than just not having the scene.
