🚨attention: sam raimi’s THE QUICK AND THE DEAD is on criterion channel🚨 this movie rules. it is a fantastically fun western about a group of ne’er-do-wells in a shooting contest to the death. it stars a menacing gene hackman, a mysterious sharon stone and a stupidly good-looking russell crowe.

There's a specific...not genre but vibe of movie from the 90s that I just love forever. Under 2 hours. Killer cast. Prolific director. Plot that keeps moving. The kind of flick you'd see on TNT in the middle of the afternoon The Quick and the Dead. Starship Troopers. Tombstone. Hunt for Red October

Every "deadly game show/tournament" movie -- Battle Royale, The Quick and the Dead, Squid Game -- asks you to be entertained just like the in-universe spectators. You want an over-the-top villain for Arnold to kill in a cool way, you wanna find out what the next squid game is

Upon re-watch, THE QUICK AND THE DEAD (1995) is even BETTER a second time around, and I also have to amend my assessment of Sharon Stone's performance. She is fantastic in this, playing a decidedly different kind of Western anti-hero. The film is much more subversive and deep than I recall.

Rest in peace Gene Hackman, Betsy and the dog. I worked on Welcome to Mooseport, his final film. I didn’t meet him but had to redraw the storyboards to give him a glow up in case he saw them. I’d heard on The Quick and the Dead he didn’t like storyboards as he felt they broke his acting flow. RIP

When I think of Gene Hackman, I think of my favorite western, The Quick and The Dead. The confidence and cruel charm and bladed reflection, Hackman really elevated the movie and set a gold standard, again, for what a movie's villain can add to a film.

Rewatched THE QUICK AND THE DEAD, a western bursting at the seams with Sam Raimi-ness. You can tell he was having the time of his life making this movie. It's got all the Raimi camera moves and pulpy elegance, gives no shits for plausibility. Wildly entertaining.
