60 of 79 · most liked firstThe People vs Larry Flynt is a biopic of the founder of Hustler magazine that focuses on his free speech cases. As a film, it manages the remarkable feat of making the publisher of the one of the most vile porno mags of the pre-internet age into a hero for the audience to root for and love.

unlabelledView post →Watching THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT, and it makes me so sad. The country, and our laws and values, have fallen so low in 30 years. The Supreme Court as portrayed in this film comes across as upholding those values we hold so dear. They would never do so now. It makes me legitimately sad and angry.

unlabelledView post →2026 watch #93: The People vs Larry Flynt. I was 14 when this came out and it was the only movie my dad ever tried to forbid me from seeing. Of course, I saw it opening night. It's funny he was so panicked about it, because this is so chaste, a Schoolhouse Rock episode with brief flashes of tits.

Which means someone on the production team for The People vs. Larry Flynt came to Columbus to do research, despite the movie ahistorically keeping Hustler’s offices in Cincinnati instead of at Gay & High in downtown Columbus.
unlabelledView post →I noted that I hate the “real life” cameo because it’s a sign the movie is too kind. It floors me I forgot the two worst offenders. The People vs Larry Flynt and JFK are movies that should be disgusted their subjects were willing to show up in the films because they depict such wretched people.

unlabelledView post →The People Vs Larry Flynt has some excellent acting in it. I was pleasantly surprised by what a great film it was and the history of fighting free speech was great too but my oh my did Courtney Love nail her role. She never gets enough credit. And Woody and Ed are always wonderful.
