Creative director/writer Thierry Boulanger recently addressed the situation: "[I am] definitely not into jordan peterson!" Here's my piece:

unlabelledView post →Oh hey, didn't expect the expansion to be free. Need to give this one some more time. I know some bounced off the irreverent tone (it's set in the same universe as The Messenger, with similar silliness) but it's an absolutely lush game.

unlabelledView post →Game #14 of 2025 is The Messenger! 🥷 The Messenger is one of those games that wears its influences proudly and then completely flips them on their head. The second half lost a bit of steam. Still fun, just a lot more backtracking and wandering than I’d have liked!!

unlabelledView post →Great soundtrack, fun dialogue, looks beautiful. I'd recommend the first third of the game if that was the entire thing; unfortunately the lack of quality of life when it comes to backtracking really soured the rest of the experience. It feels like it was so close to being a solid 9/10 game, but threw it all away to pad out the runtime.

unlabelledView post →The Messenger is an hommage to the NES Ninja Gaiden series but midway through the game it transforms into a metroidvania! Great bosses, memorable NPC`s, an amazing present/future mechanic which pays tribute to 8bit and 16bit action games and graphics and above all else, The Messenger will actually make you laugh out loud with its humour and witty dialogue! Hands down one of the best games I have ever played!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →“The Messenger” is a genuinely fantastic game. It perfectly blends challenging platforming with exploration, backed by incredible music, writing, and art direction. As someone who usually dislikes Metroidvanias, I was hooked all the way through the DLC. I never got bored. If you’re on the fence, just buy it. It’s so much more than it initially seems, and one of those rare games where the developers’ passion truly shines through. I can’t recommend it enough.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm playing through The Messenger and wow can you tell this game came out in the 2010s. It commits so hard to the "ha ha these characters know this is a game" bit that all the dialogue quickly becomes infuriating
unlabelledView post →Played some more Returnal (got to final phase of second boss), a bit of Fearmonium (got some new abilites) and tried out the Messenger quickly. Seems like a lovely game. Catchy music. 😌

unlabelledView post →At first I was enjoying my time with this game. The pixel art is gorgeous and the music is really good. Gameplay felt snappy from the get-go as well. Yet very quickly, things went downhill. I really don't like how dying and upgrades feel in this game, especially combined with how the game is designed in general. The knockback is comical with how it can send you flying across the screen under the right circumstances. Not a fan? There's an upgrade for that! Which feels like this game was…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hey, take this scroll. You've been tasked playing this game now. Trust me you will not regret it. Had a lot of fun with this title. Well balanced difficulty, lot of humour, nicely fitting music, fun to play and discover. Just be warned, if you don't like linear platformers - you have nothing to worry! After dew hours game shows its true genre providing completely new approach on levels discovered so far. And now go and do THE THING.

unlabelledView post →This review contains spoilers, as it is hard to explain why I wouldn't recommend the game without knowing about the second part of the game. The Messenger starts out strong as a linear 2D action platformer with an amazing blend of fun movement abilities, overall great design and some really good music. It was an absolute pleasure to play through the game until the big twist, which turns the game into a metroidvania. Everything after that was an absolute slog with an overabundance of…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Mostly neutral review, but I'm still leaning towards a thumbs down. Spoilers ahead. I have to admit that the idea is very cool: a classic platformer that introduces time travel mechanics and then turns into a metroidvania, as if to contrast the old platformer format with the modern one that's in fashion today. Very impressive visually, though I much prefer the "retro" graphics to the fancier newer ones in the second half of the game, especially in the catacombs, where the newer graphics make…

unlabelledView post →Game #11 completed in 2026, The Messenger. Glad I pushed through this! It's a really cool game. Trying to ease into 2D Metroidvanias (this is the first I've finished) and get better at 2D platformers in general. Really enjoyed this. Now I need to finish Sea of Stars!
unlabelledView post →2 words : Absolute Cinema. The combat and platforming itself feel really smooth The switch-up between 8-bit (past) and 16-bit (future) works really well altering both the sound quality as well as the area you're currently in It has some great banter between the shopkeeper NPC and the main character for some hilarious dialogue. Absolute bangers playing throughout the entire game as well. 10/10 game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ok, so - I finished it. And... it's complicated. The messenger is an overall good game with fun and innovative gameplay ideas. It's a bit of a raw diamond, that could do with a bit more refinement. I taught level design and balancing in a course for game design, and here are some points that I would pic up with my students: - Gameplay mechanics: The game uses a series of well tested traversal and combat mechanics for metroidvania games and tweaks them in a way that doesn't make them feel…

One of the best metroidvanias I’ve played in years. Especially want to praise the writing and the music.

unlabelledView post →This game starts off not too crazy for a 2D platformer, and rather boring honestly, and for a while I didn't feel like finishing it until my friend nudged me to keep playing. It gets better as you play, definitely missed the mark in the beginning for me, but once I got a few upgrades (after about 4-ish hours of playtime) then it started getting more fun. There's some pretty cool gimmicks and movement tech this game has to offer, and exploring gets a lot more fun once you unlock those.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Looks like The Messenger or Ninja Gaiden or Cyber Shadow. The Messenger is really awesome and if you haven't played it yet you should. So yeah what I am trying to say is this game looks really cool
unlabelledView post →This game was recommended to me by my friend and it did not take time for me to absolutely love it! At first it felt like classic platformer with running, jumping and slashing with the sword but at I did not expect was the switch from 8‑bit to 16‑bit halfway through.... you can literally travel between eras and that changes level layout, music and how you approach exploration too. To top off, the game opens up into a metroidvania later on with more abilities which feels quite clever. Also, the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Solid game with solid concept. It's not as intense as Celeste when it comes to platforming puzzle, and the action/progression is not as intense as Hollow Knight. It's a nice hybrid between the two, that makes you feel like a ninja with all the mobility tools when you nail it. And above all, the game is relatively easy. I did have some minor complaints: 1. Backtracking sucks. Fast travel is almost none existent and if you choose the "wrong" path, you have to re-do the entire stage because…
