positive · AI labelView post →Ok wait ppl didn’t like The Marvels?? This movie is incredible
positive · AI labelView post →Ouch. This sucks. As I said in my last newsletter, the vast majority of folks who skipped this movie had no reason to think it was a bad movie (they hadn't seen it, ticket sales weakened before reviews were published). Rather than a verdict on The Marvels, it's a bad sign for all superhero films.
neutral · AI labelView post →It’s the same shit that happened to movies like The Marvels, which was also a perfectly adequate film with great actors and some good ideas poorly executed, and the only reason that movie made as much as it did make was because it was part of the MCU which has more investment from audiences than DC.
neutral · AI labelView post →FINALLY watched The Marvels. Parts were great, Iman Vellani was fantastic (best part of the movie, which I expected), the silly parts didn't last so long I got cringey. I wasn't thrilled with the ending which was too much technobabble but it was still a fun flick and I like the three leads together.
positive · AI labelView post →You guys are all nuts. "The Marvels" is a perfectly acceptable mid-tier MCU movie.
neutral · AI labelView post →Remember when The Marvels (good movie) bombed at the box office and the press blamed Nia DaCosta and then when Joker 2 (bad movie) bombed the press barely mentioned Todd Phillips when writing their think pieces on what happened
positive · AI labelView post →The Marvels, directed by Nia DaCosta. A great, unfairly maligned movie.
positive · AI labelView post →My new movie column is up, it's tangentially on The Marvels, and less tangentially on the problems of widely expansive entertainment universes.
neutral · AI labelView post →We are going to go see Captain America Brave New World tomorrow. I understand the Disney boycott but I want to support this black lead superhero film, which we don’t get a lot, made by & staring other POC as well. They deserve this film to do well. Just like The Marvels deserved to do well..
neutral · AI labelView post →I genuinely feel bad for anyone who missed The Marvels in theater for the Flerken scene alone. I sat in that seat gushing tears from laughing so hard. I dont buy a lot of physical media...The Marvels steelbook is one I had to have. Such a great, fun film omg. Also Iman Vellani is a genuine treasure.
positive · AI labelView post →So I'm watching The Marvels and it's a fun movie. Appreciate how completely ready Kamala Khan's family are to throw hands when the aliens turn up in their house, like without hesitation they're hoiking chairs at them.
positive · AI labelView post →In a reddit AMA, film director Nia DaCosta says that in early development of The Marvels there was a fight scene in the core of a planet where the gravity keeps shifting, and she thought the way the Tifa vs Loz church fight and that sequence at the end dealt with weightlessness was great.
neutral · AI labelView post →Here’s a superb film of a reggae concert at the 1973 Edinburgh Festival. It stars The Cimarons, Winston Groovy, Dennis Alcapone, The Marvels, Nicky Thomas, The Pioneers, Malaka and Judge Dread 🇯🇲 🏴▶️ youtu.be/1gtiqhTL7JM
neutral · AI labelView post →finally watching The Marvels and I already loved the Kamala Khan series so I knew I’d like it more than most but I just got to the Trojan kitten scene where alien monster cats eat an entire civilization to the tune of Memories and sorry but if you didn’t like this movie you suck
positive · AI labelView post →The massive pull back and some of the attack is because yes a BILLIONAIRE got mad he saw so many Negroes and women on film and specifically attacked the Marvels and Ryan Coogler and was upset that didn’t tank them variety.com/2024/film/ne...
neutral · AI labelView post →Nia DaCosta is the first black woman director to debut at No. 1 at the U.S. box office for the opening of the horror film Candyman (2021). She then became the first black woman to direct a Marvel film. The Marvels (2023), is the highest-grossing film directed by a black woman. #womenshistorymonth

neutral · AI labelView post →Also I ain’t never forgiving movie journalism for how the did my baby Kamala Khan and the Marvels Because they talked CASH MONEY mess on them girls And turns out TURNS OUT !!!!!
positive · AI labelView post →Alex is speaking the truth here. The Marvels is fun in a “okay, I’m barely following this but it’s a nice time at the movies” way. Ant-Man 3 is a fun disposable film. Black Panther 2 is just a total mess, its overlong, its boring, it wastes all of its best actors.
positive · AI labelView post →Nia DaCosta says she’s still on good terms with Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige: “I mean, it's so funny because the way it was reported, it seemed very dramatic, but actually I fucking love Kevin Feige and we all get along. At the end of the day, [The Marvels is] a Disney film. It’s a family film.”
neutral · AI labelView post →Wow, The Marvels really has the vibe of something that started as a season of a Disney+ show and got edited down to a movie with no regard for structure or pacing
negative · AI labelView post →Much of the first paragraph of a fine, substantial review of The Marvels by Helen O’Hara in the new Empire. Which made me think how pernicious film-babble focused on little but profits & franchises & culture wars often is when a genuine engagement - positive or not - with the movie itself is absent.
neutral · AI labelView post →"The Marvels is 1hr45min long" is the single most exciting thing I've heard about that movie (I am excited for it, it looks fun, I am just so tired of the 2hr30min default blockbuster runtime)
positive · AI labelView post →It was especially gross when Fiege and Disney tried to hurl Nia DaCosta under the bus for The Marvels, clucking their tongues that she just must have not been up the job. The failure had nothing to do with "Don't make a movie that assumes audiences will watch three (3) TV series as homework."
neutral · AI labelView post →‘THE MARVELS’ director Nia DaCosta says “the lack of a solid script” was one of her issues with the film. “Which is always gonna just wreak havoc on the whole process.” (via t.co/hqveGueQFV)
neutral · AI labelView post →What do people actually want from a Marvel movie in 2025? Because after the way folks dogpiled on The Marvels, She-Hulk, and other projects that didn’t revolve around a white male character, the preemptive hate before a movie releases seems disingenuous (at best).
neutral · AI labelView post →The Marvels is a good movie, that was over edited. Nia DaCosta is a great director. The problem is the Disney CEO, Bob Iger. He only understands profit, not art. That’s why so many Disney movies get over edited now and turn into something else rather than what the director wanted.
positive · AI labelView post →"The Marvels" was a swell time, I'm glad I've seen all the Marvel movies now. Screw the haters.
positive · AI labelView post →One of the pleasures of presenting BBC Radio 3 Sound of Cinema for 12 years has been talking with Laura Karpman. For #IWD2025 we hear from her & the composers she's mentored at the Alliance for Women Film Composers. She scored The Marvels; she is a marvel. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m...
neutral · AI labelView post →I know emotions are raw right now and everyone is tired of this subject, but I feel this has to be said: The Marvels is not a great film but it’s both entertaining and adorable.
unlabelledView post →I'm not saying The Marvels is a perfect movie and there are valid criticisms of it, but I think it's fun and you can't convince me at least some of the hate it gets isn't just from some people really don't like women
unlabelledView post →The Marvels is the most delightful and perfect superhero team-up movie, and it remains a shame it disappointed in the box office like it did
unlabelledView post →I've now seen every single MCU film. The Marvels was the last one. screenplay is pretty convoluted but the three leads are strong. action scenes are amusing; lots of animated kittens. not a great movie by any stretch, but I had some fun with it.
unlabelledView post →New blog post: brief thoughts on The Marvels, and how the lack of conversation about the actual movie (as opposed to its box office take) feels like a worse sign for the future of the MCU than said box office take.
unlabelledView post →Pointedly here, BTW: the difference is tone: "Avengers" acted like the FIRST MOVIE in a potential future series of Avengers movies; whereas "The Marvels" (again: good movie!) would really like you to go home and catch up on your Disney+ viewing if you feel like you need further context 🤷♂️
unlabelledView post →Nia DaCosta in the Criterion Closet is proof that there is life beyond directing MCU Slop. The Marvels wasn’t a good movie but it wasn’t her fault!
unlabelledView post →Share a movie you’ll always defend 🖤 I don't care what anyone says, The Marvels was a good and fun movie that deserved so much better. It didn't help that it had a misogynist hate campaign and the Hollywood press was cheering for it to fail.
unlabelledView post →The Marvels" did not get the reception it deserved. @kradec.bsky.social discusses why the 2023 movie should have been a bigger hit, from the delightful performances to the Flerken kitties... reactormag.com/the-superher...
unlabelledView post →Just got back from watching The Marvels with my girls. The last time I walked away from a movie this delighted was Into the Spiderverse. I can not say enough about how much I love this movie.
unlabelledView post →As you might have guessed, I adored The Marvels! Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and the superstar that is Iman Vellani are delightfully good together and the film is a real blast. My full review is up now on @loudandclearrvs.bsky.social! 🎥
unlabelledView post →The Marvels is such a fun movie. Iman Vellani brings such joy to her Kamala Khan performance. Sadly, the usual suspects did everything in their power to tank the film simply because it has female leads.
unlabelledView post →Finally watched The Marvels. That was SUCH a fun movie!
unlabelledView post →Spoiler free review of The Marvels. The most fun an MCU film has been in a while. Sweet, and laugh out loud hilarious. Really leaned into the better aspects of Ms Marvel, and managed to avoid Captain Marvel feeling overpowered for an ensemble.
unlabelledView post →In most cases a film as bad as "The Marvels" would force a studio to put a pause on their entire directions, and it's not even the worst film Marvel has put out this year
unlabelledView post →“The Marvels” is an exhausting waste of charm and potential. We need a total and complete shutdown of Marvel movies until our representatives figure out what’s going on. joysauce.com/threes-a-cro...
unlabelledView post →Yeah. The film has a villian problem (but what Marvel movie doesn’t?) but honestly. The Marvels is a fun romp and doesn’t deserve the hate it got. (Also. Given the ending. Where the F is Monica in the Doomsday announcements??)
unlabelledView post →I'm also still mad about The Marvels, an absolute delight of a film that the racists and misogynists successfully tanked. If you haven't watched it because you got some impression that it's bad, you were lied to.
unlabelledView post →The Marvels is a fun movie that got a bad rap for no good reason imo! It's fun. All it needs to be for me tbh
unlabelledView post →‘CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD’ began its pre-sales on Friday at the domestic box office. The film is currently performing 1.4x better than ‘THE MARVELS’ and is on par with ‘ETERNALS’ (via Luiz_Fernando_J | Twitter/X)
unlabelledView post →Saw THE MARVELS tonight and the whole thing was just simple goofy fun. I dunno. It feels like everyone was judging the film based on their idea of what the film should be not what it actually was. Relax and enjoy things, people! And Iman Vellani is a freaking treasure.
unlabelledView post →Rewatching The Marvels again since I saw it in theaters and once again I am IRATE about the treatment this movie got.
unlabelledView post →I think “The Marvels” was a good movie and more people should see it. And Iman Vellani is the best addition to the MCU since Endgame.
unlabelledView post →Yep. Same thing happened with The Marvels. Another cool movie that was hated for no reason (aside from the obvious)
unlabelledView post →OMG. I got the movie to work (The Marvels), but that required getting Frank to give up the remote.
unlabelledView post →When it comes to historical epics, I can’t find any evidence of any big budget historical film other than Disney’s live-action MULAN being made by a woman. Disney/Marvel has a better track record overall, with The Marvels, Eternals, Frozen 2, and Captain Marvel, but that’s 5 out of about 100.
unlabelledView post →Unlike most female-skewing superhero films (like ‘Elektra,’ ‘The Marvels’ and the first #Supergirl movie), next summer’s Milly Alcock-starring sci-fi actioner will *not* have to follow a poorly-received or commercially unsuccessful male-skewing superhero flick.
unlabelledView post →Name a movie that flopped at the box office but is actually great. #FilmSky 📽️ I love The Marvels. It's super fun.
unlabelledView post →Watched The Marvels last night and loved it. Fun movie, a few (appropriately) heavy moments, tons of easter eggs and cameos. Would definitely watch again.
unlabelledView post →Nia DaCosta says ‘THE MARVELS’ wasn’t the film she intended to make at first. “There was a certain point when I was like, ‘Ok, this isn’t going to be the movie that I pitched or even the first version of the movie that I shot.’” (via www.worldofreel.com/blog/2025/4/...)
