Most of the time you are forced to use them, and if used incorrectly, you will find yourself restarting a lot. Take away the powerups and the annoying dialogue between rounds then you will have a decent, playable Mahjong game.

Instead they give you powerups and tell you to use them. So the powerups are not optional or extra they are essential to beat stages. But you don't have nearly enough juice because you will be getting stuck in every stage due to the total random board layout. If you can't create a working algorithm don't try to make a game around your half-assed broken one.

The power ups do not help with the game progression because it is impossible to build up the power meter that charges them since the board runs out of moves after only a few turns.
