The Longest Journey
Developer Funcom
The Longest Journey is a point-and-click adventure game developed by Funcom, and released on Microsoft Windows in November 1999. An iOS version was later developed and released on October 28, 2014. The game's story sees players assume the role of a young art student from Earth, who is thrust into an emerging situation that leads her into discovering about the existence of a parallel Earth where magic exists, and how… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

unlabelledView post →I started it about 20 years ago, and only finally finished it today. I loved every minute of it - playing it in 2026 made me extra aware of how ahead of its time the world building, character dynamics and distinct flavour were back in 1999. It truly was a long journey, during which I explored two very different worlds, talked for hours with various characters, without ever getting bored. Truly, the storytelling here is on another level. Definitely one of the best adventure games I have ever…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →1) The Longest Journey It's a cliche for me to pick this, but it's vital. @ragso.bsky.social's wonderful game had two life-changing messages: 1) The essential importance of FIGHTING to hold on to your childhood imagination throughout your adult life. 2) That you aren't life's main character.
unlabelledView post →Great adventure game with good story. This game deserves a remake.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just rolled credits on Dustborn by @redthreadgames.bsky.social! As a fan of The Longest Journey, Dreamfall, and Dreamfall Chapters I figured this game would be enjoyable. And I did!

unlabelledView post →The actual game is quite good, if you like the genre. Unfortunately, this Steam version has a shocking number of technical issues. I've tried it on different devices, and each device has a wide array of bugs. Blinking screens, freezes, crashes, etc. Oddly, the most consistent bug is that the game will cause all of the font on your computer to display incorrectly. Once you boot up the game and then exit, all of your fonts will display as the same font style that the game uses for its menu. And…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Disclaimer: This is a point & click game, so this will already dissuade most people from playing. On top of that, it's older with very dated graphics. And there's not really much action or anything too exciting. What makes this game a classic isn't the graphics or gameplay, but the spirit, characters, and story it possesses. It's also quite long (as the title implies). Relatively speaking, it's not that long of a game, however it feels quite long for an old school point & click…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So far enjoying the game. If you get stuck and are like me who after about 10 mins of being bothered by not knowing what to do there is a spoiler free guide on the workshop. There are also HD Mods and you can set the font to anything you like (Atkinson Hyperlegible BOLD is good). Workshop guides will explain how to do all that and it makes it look good and run well on modern systems.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For how old it is - it's still a great game. I played it when it came out and it was my favourite game then, after 25 years it still holds a special place in my heart. Sure, it has it's flaws, the walking/running back and forth while trying to figure out what to do without fast travel was killing me... There is a lot, LOT of talking, and with no pause option during dialogue it can be annoying. The graphics... it bugs, half of the characters had holes in their bodies, they were clunkie and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Longest Journey is an all-time classic. A great story, fantastic characters and voice acting, and dreamlike scenery bursting with creativity. April, the main character, embarks on an epic journey of self-discovery, growth, and hope—and it’s beautifully told. Though it hasn’t aged gracefully, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the early evolution of cinematic 3D graphics. I recommend playing it with an emulator like ResidualVM or ScummVM to avoid any technical issues.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dreamfall Chapters is the final (?) game in The Longest Journey saga, but you don't have to play the previous games to enjoy this one (although it helps). Dreamfall Chapters is 70% off and features an angry robot called "Sh*tbot". You can't go wrong with that! store.steampowered.com/app/237850/D...

unlabelledView post →As a former art student, putting myself in April Ryan's shoes was one of the most immersive ways to play this game. However, art is not the main focus of this classic point-and-click game, as we plunge headfirst into a fantasy setting before we realise it was just a dream. Or was it? True to its name, The Longest Journey does indeed feel long, but never in a bad way. The pacing is deliberate, always giving you something new to uncover, and the slow build heightens the tension as the stakes…

unlabelledView post →It’s always baffled me how I end up in gamer circles because the last video game I remember really enjoying beyond a few short mobile things was The Longest Journey. That is a) how old I am and b) how little I play them.
unlabelledView post →I played this game once... Long, long time ago. It became one of my favorites then and it still is in my top 5 games. I remember it was criticized for too much talking, too much to read. Don't people read books? There are no animations in a book, but a lot of words 😒 But a lot of words are needed to tell a good (detailed) story and create a whole new world

unlabelledView post →even months after beating this game, i still find myself thinking about it a lot. i think about april, the setting, the dialogue, the feel of it. despite its age, and despite encompassing many classic fantasy tropes, it manages to be so wholly unique and enthralling, totally charming with a very memorable protagonist. i personally love the back-and-forth setting between a classic high fantasy world versus a grim cyberpunk one. it's such a fun, fascinating dichotomy that i just wanted to keep…

The story is great and even if the graphics look old (obviously) they are charming in their own way. I asolutely recommend TLJ is you are a fan of fantasy stories!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Classic game my parents accidentally got me as a kid 20+ years ago that I replayed now as an adult. Definitely is a bit dated in gameplay, which is pretty typical for these types of games that are this old. But is a great adventure game that I think is worth giving a go, even now
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of my favorite games ever, y'all. Highly recommend! (Disclaimer that while this game is excellent on its own, bits of the story will be way more meaningful if you play The Longest Journey and Dreamfall: The Longest Journey first, which are both old-school point-and-click adventure games)

unlabelledView post →I played this series in the most unconventional manner possible. Having watched a Let's Play of the sequels and watched a summary of the first game before playing the final game myself back in 2017. However, this month I ended up playing the entire trilogy, still in a bizarre order, I played the sequel, replayed the third, and finally the original. I avoided playing the older games for years because I figured they would be too outdated and janky to be worthwhile, which to be honest there is…

Leaving my review only to help those who experienced the same issue as myself, trying to play it on a newly bought laptop / Win11 etc. What saved me, and what I highly recommend to resolve issues with graphics, is in the Discussions area, called The Longest Journey HD Mod. Done everything as per instructions given, but it failed to launch properly again. I set Game 3D Renderer to OpenGL, ticked Filter Graphics and set…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I run the game via ScummVM, because otherwise it keeps crashing. Cool story, but the game is booooooring. You have to go back and forth multiple times and sit through hours of dialog and reading. Most of it doesn't really influence the story, but you have to do it to unlock next steps. Some puzzles are nonsensical and not in the cute way. Many things must be done in order unnecessarily while in other places game lets you do things out of order, but doesn't reflect it in dialog, so the…

I played the series in a slightly weird order, since I played the second one first and then the third, and now I've only just finished the first. I think the second one was my favourite, the third my least and this one takes second place. What a blast! It is an endearing and mesmerizing tale of self-discovery, love, sacrifice, hope and learning, and so much more in between. The story of the Longest Journey is the key ingredient here, told mostly through the amazing VA of Sarah, starring as April Ryan (you) and a myriad of supporting characters you'll meet on…
