The film, directed by Sam Peckinpah, is widely considered a classic of 1970s neo-noir cinema for its gritty action & the intense off-screen romance between its two stars.
unlabelledView post →Happy birthday to Jim Thompson, one of the best and most uncompromising American noir writers. If you only know The Getaway from the film versions, you're missing a lot. Neither had the guts to go all the way to the real ending of the story.

Never played it, because I realized too late that it's not a spinoff of the Daniel Day-Lewis New York movie. It's some GTA thing taken from The Getaway on PS2. I don't need that, I already own GTA on PSP

unlabelledView post →My #Noirvember film #3, Roger Donaldson’s 1994 remake of Jim Thompson’s THE GETAWAY. Have not seen it since its release. Pretty damn good, with a great cast & an underlying nastiness that somehow feels both extremely 1990s & very true to the themes in Thompson’s body of work

unlabelledView post →Happy 100th birthday to director Sam Peckinpah. His bold use of sound has been very inspiring to me. Straw Dogs made brilliant use of sonic abstractions. The Wild Bunch changed the way gunshots sounded in movies. And The Getaway has one of the best audio intros of any movie ever. A sonic powerhouse.
unlabelledView post →Last night's viewing - a change of pace - Sam Peckinpah's The Getaway based on a Jim Thompson novel. Steve McQueen and Ali McGraw on the run and one of my favourite actors Slim Pickens in a small but key role. Quite a contrast to Buñuel and Cocteau of the last few weeks. Another from @kanopy.com

unlabelledView post →I remembered the movie THE GETAWAY as a nasty and mean piece of work. And it is. Nobody is likeable, not even our 'heroes'. I now recognize that as a great depiction of Jim Thompson's very noir world. (The end of the book is waaay darker, btw.) Discovered that McQueen drives the car on this cover.

This British crime drama, almost an interactive movie, uses photo-realistic assets and a seemingly 1-to-1 recreation of London to tell a gritty revenge tale. Keep in mind that the PS2 has no hard drive. All the data is being streamed IN REAL TIME from the (slow) DVD drive. #retrogaming #PS2 #TheGetaway #Sony #TeamSoho

unlabelledView post →No Country for Rod Steiger! Across the Bridge is a sweaty, mean-spirited crime film, that takes a Twilight Zone premise to a setting rather like El Rey at the end of The Getaway (novel). It is fatalistic, and every decision begets a worse outcome.
