The Dirty Dozen
12 American military prisoners in World War II are ordered to infiltrate a well-guarded enemy château and kill the Nazi officers vacationing there. The soldiers, most of whom are facing death sentences for a variety of violent crimes, agree to the mission and the possible commuting of their sentences. From TMDB

Tarantino often swings big—this time he tosses the rules and connects.

The Magnificent 7, The Great Escape, The Dirty Dozen & Hard Times are some of his notable films. Death Wish was his most popular film & it led to 4 sequels. #CharlesBronson

unlabelledView post →What, Spinal Tap goes to 11. Also, most people think next is 12 angry men, but, no, it is The Dirty Dozen (Some think it is Cheaper by the Dozen, but that is a different movie series, starting with one flew over the cuckoos nest)
unlabelledView post →It always feels a little weird when AMC plays THE DIRTY DOZEN on Veteran's Day because star Lee Marvin, who saw brutal action in WWII, hated the movie and called it "Unrealistic crap." It's like my Vietnam vet friends going to similar movies just to laugh at the bullshit.
unlabelledView post →For my money, I would love to see a Wookie-centric, subtitled, all-Shryiiwook movie about the Wookiee revolt. Like, The Dirty Dozen x The 13th Warrior x Wookiees. And a Star Wars horror movie, with the Ewoks as the bloodthirsty antagonists.

Huge ensemble cast with Yuen Biao once again is the coolest effortlessly steeling the movie. Full contact fight scenes and back breaking stunts highlight this HK take on The Dirty Dozen.
unlabelledView post →Donald Sutherland’s death has led me to watch The Dirty Dozen for the first time. Good lord, that cast. And Lee Marvin. What a force.
unlabelledView post →- Saving Private Ryan - Fury - The Big Red One - Force Ten From Navarone (it is a sequel to The Guns of Navarone, which is also great) - The Dirty Dozen - Patton - Memphis Belle - Victory (While no Nazi’s are killed in the movie watching them get humiliated is nice) It is sometimes called “Escape to Victory”.

Couldn't go to Boing Boing, the Dirty Dozen, or Goldfinger. Snuck out to see the St Valentine's Day Massacre instead. 🤪

unlabelledView post →I rewatched THE DIRTY DOZEN recently and it reminded me that the concept for that film was inspired by the story "The Filthy Thirteen" by Arch Whitehouse in TRUE, Oct. 1944, which we reprinted in the MEN'S ADVENTURE QUARTERLY #5, the Dirty Missions issue (amzn.to/4jWMvyU). Cover art by Rico Tomaso.

unlabelledView post →Rewatching THE DIRTY DOZEN reminded me…the MEN’S ADVENTURE QUARTERLY #5 (amzn.to/3RzoQFk) reprints the story from TRUE, Oct. 1944 paratroopers who were the real-life inspiration for that movie. They were initially called the "Dirty Dozen" until they added a member, then became "The Filthy Thirteen."
unlabelledView post →In 1967, there was no rating system. My mom took me (8), sister (10) and brother (7) to see The Dirty Dozen because she thought we would enjoy a good war movie. In retrospect, Dr. Doolittle might have been better.
unlabelledView post →Just once, l would like someone responding to one of those red carpet questions from @letterboxd.social about their four favourite films of all time, to say THE DIRTY DOZEN (1967), a western, or a Hammer horror film.
unlabelledView post →It’s just telling that someone like Spielberg — for all his flaws — can make a half dozen World War Two movies alone, and they don’t have a lot in common. Tarantino can only imagine one WW2 movie, and it’s a mashup between THE DIRTY DOZEN and a cheesy Italian remake of THE DIRTY DOZEN.
unlabelledView post →The Dirty Dozen has a very cathartic finale, nearly on the level of the cinema fire from Inglorious Basterds.
unlabelledView post →Also Lee Marvin thought the Dirty Dozen sucked & everyone was too old (presumably his character was promoted to major for the movie adaptation because a white-haired captain would look silly)
unlabelledView post →Realized part of the reason I like the DEN OF THIEVES movies is that they're structurally a lot like old school action movies like THE DIRTY DOZEN. Less throwing big set pieces at you constantly and more building up to a big sequence or two that takes up the last big chunk of the movie.
unlabelledView post →It was a reference to The Dirty Dozen, where their characters raid a Nazi conference. And kill Nazis. Great movie.

An incredible cast featuring Lee Marvin, Jim Brown, Charles Bronson, Donald Sutherland, John Cassavetes, Richard Jaekal, and more. Recommended. "Killin' generals could get to be a habit with me." 🎥
unlabelledView post →Coincidentally, I watched the Dirty Dozen for the first time a couple weeks ago. That movie has some problems (alarmingly glib treatment of sexual violence, the casual execution of a bunch of Nazis and civilians) but a very young Donald is delightful, particularly when he’s irritating Lee Marvin.
