I don't mind at all! I told my readers I'm taking some time off this week (to fix my burnout). The game is "The Curse of Monkey Island" by LucasArts, & is one of my favourite point-and-clicks of all time. Its brand of witty, snappy, dry humour has not been replicated by any gaming comp. since 1997.

So, for my next game, I wanted to bump the frame count up to 12, but I was scared it would be too much. Then I studied one of my favorite animated walk cycles: Guybrush from The Curse of Monkey Island. It's 12 frames, yet the game is only 640x480. So why does it work? (🧵4/6)

All these years, I finally have proper English skills to play Act 3 without a walkthrough! My 12-year-old me is very proud now! And I still remember most of the puzzle from heart! I just adore this game! Also, there is an upscale mod that is a must-have to look as pretty as I remembered ;)

This is the absolute pinnacle of the series' visual style, trading pixels for a stunning, timeless 90s cartoon aesthetic that still looks gorgeous today. The gameplay swaps out the clunky old verb grid for a streamlined "coin" interface, making the puzzle-solving feel way smoother and snappier. Add in a killer orchestral soundtrack, top-tier voice acting, and Murray the talking skull, and you have a flawless point-and-click masterpiece.

I very rarely replay games and the few that I do almost never hold up, especially when drenched in nostalgia. Curse of Monkey Island is an exception. I finished it on its release and 20+ years later I've finished it again, and I appreciate it even more than I used to. I feel like Monkey Island purists tend to stick their nose up at entries other than the first two, but I think I'm willing to admit finally that Curse is by far the strongest in the series (Sorry Ron and Tim). The Curse of Monkey Island isn't just a game to me, it's a piece of my childhood. I still remember spending hours getting lost in its world, just spending time in Plunder Island, like it was my own hometown. Even after all these years, the feelings haven't faded. Replaying this game feels like opening an old photo album—full of nostalgia, warmth, and the feeling of being a teenager.

The Curse of Monkey Island is the best in the series. Somehow, it takes everything great about the first two games, the humour, the puzzles, and the animation, and improves on them. I’m not sure how they did it, but it’s the perfect blend of everything that worked in the first two games, yet it exceeds them in every single way. The animation is mind blowing for a 1997 game. If it were released today, it would still hold up. The world is vibrant, lively, and beautiful, and I can’t help but…

Played the entire game on Steam Deck despite it being listed as unsupported — zero performance issues. The only hiccups I ran into were minor UI clarity moments (a couple clickable spots weren’t immediately obvious), but nothing that detracted from the overall experience. Fantastic writing, charm, and classic point-and-click fun. A must-play for fans of the genre.

Laugh out loud funny dialogue and extremely ambitious even by today's standards About 50% of the puzzles are classic point and click nonsense so don't feel bad using a guide. Games back then were made to draw out playtime rather than respecting your time (there weren't as many back then so taking forever on a new game was a feature not an oversight). Full disclosure, I did not grow up with these games, but they have some of the funniest writing I've ever seen a game.

This is the GOAT, and I dont use that word frequently. This is the game which redefined the point'n'click genre and the ways that can still be recognised today! Works like a charm thanks to good porting - I'd sure like it to be remastered, but not sure is that even possible or even needed for the graphics and animations are hand drawn making it timeless. The controls work smooth as well - just remind that the menu opens pressing F1 instead of Esc. Writing takes the cake however and I don't know…
