Monkey Island™ 2 Special Edition: LeChuck’s Revenge™
Developer LucasArts
Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge is an adventure game developed and published by LucasArts in 1991. Players control the pirate Guybrush Threepwood, who searches for the legendary treasure of Big Whoop and faces the zombie pirate LeChuck. Like The Secret of Monkey Island (1990), development was led by Ron Gilbert with Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman. Monkey Island 2 was the sixth LucasArts game to use the SCUMM… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

But I do not jive with the new art at all. I hate how dead and expressionless everyone looks compared to the vibrancy of everything else. It really pales in comparison to the excellent pixel art of the original, which is here via a hot-swappble classic mode... but the classic mode leaves a lot to be desired. The main reason is how iMUSE, the game's…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have a lot to say about MI2, but I don't think I'll sway anyone's views - it's cemented itself as a classic of the genre and at 35 years since original release, what's the point in feedback? However, it is worth noting that this game is a standout example of why so many people tend to avoid Point and Click games. Many of the puzzles are illogical, unfair and, being honest, tedious. The middle portion of the game will have you backtracking over 3 different islands and numerous scenes trying…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →They took everything great about the first game, cranked up the budget, and made the puzzles exponentially more diabolical. Guybrush is at his peak charmingly arrogant self here, and the audio design, especially the voice acting, elevates the comedy perfectly. Just be prepared to get genuinely stumped a few times, because the logic gets beautifully weird. It's a masterclass in sequel design that every adventure fan needs to play.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Compared to monkey island 1, this seemed much more dated and poorly designed. The game seems designed around getting people to use its hint system, which at the time of release was a help line that cost money to use. Which is to say they intentionally made the game worse so they could sneak some extra profit in. DLC avant la lettre. Puzzles have many plausible solutions that just weren't the ones the designers were thinking of. There are lazy fetch quests where you just go to the store to buy…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →“Congratulations, you’re Guybrush Threepwood: a wannabe pirate with the confidence of a golden retriever and the decision‑making skills of a wet sock.” Half the game I was wandering around the Caribbean like a man who forgot what his actual goal was. The other half I was getting bullied by every NPC, including a talking skull who somehow has more charisma than me. At some point I realized Guybrush’s greatest enemy isn’t LeChuck — it’s his own inability to stop making terrible choices.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just as good as the first one, funny, great writing, great music. I like how they did the dev commentary on demand, so you can listen to it if you want but it doesn't always have to be enabled. I still advise using a walkthrough as there is some moon logic, but if you're ok with that it's not too bad.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The best point and click adventure game of all time. Wonderful music, graphics, extremely funny and great puzzles. Make sure you use the classic graphics as they are superior to the new version. Don't forget to read "How to serve your fellow man", the book written by a cannibal
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Monkey Island 2 starts incredibly strong! I was hooked from the first scene. The early puzzles and writing were excellent. But as the game progressed, the puzzle quality steadily declined, and the ending felt disappointing. I’ve never encountered a more annoying puzzle than the Monkey Ranch one, it’s baffling how anyone could call that fun. The twist ending didn’t land for me; I felt let down rather than amused. It’s still a solid game made just a year after the original (a real…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Outstanding. The nostalgia from replaying this faithfully updated special edition was wonderful, and the jokes still cracked a smile. But damn, its much more difficult in my 40s, my teenage brain was wired to solve the obscure puzzles in a way my old head is unable to do!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →No where near as good as part one. Special edition is bugged..you can not proceed affter 9.2 hours of play! The monical is missing. Very annoying.....Play part one. Its excellent. But this? No.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Another amazing point and click adventure game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's really, really good until it's not anymore. Puzzles often rely on dialogue you only hear once and probably heard hours ago in-game, and possibly days ago irl if you play slowly. You can be walking around with almost 50 items in your inventory, a lot of which is red herring garbage, and still be missing some minor item that was fully blended into the background, even though the new graphics try to fix this problem. But you're *still* not completing this without checking guides, possibly…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →what is there to say..it's one of the greatest games ever.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You don't need many words to describe this Game. I have fond memories of that time! Geez... I had a 80486DX2 66 back then in the 90s lol. But I digress! Monkey Island 2 Special Edition is a fantastic remaster of this classic! The updated visuals and sound breathe new life into this adventure, and it plays perfectly on the Steam Deck with the trackpads—smooth, intuitive, and a joy to experience on the go. This Point' n Click Adventure is a must-play!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best adventure games of all time. It's crazy to think this game was originally released in 1991, there's not a lot of games from that era that aged as good as this one. The plot continues the adventures of pirate Guybrush Threepwood, this time trying to find the legendary lost treasure of Big Whoop. As Secret of MI, this game is divided into 4 parts, with one being about half the game. It follows the story with the main characters from the prequel making a return here. The lore…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Monkey Island 2 is one of the best adventure games of all time. The remastered edition graphics are so much better than the original. It's hard to play along to 1991 graphics these days. A must play and own for all pirates!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The ending still haunts me when I can't fall asleep soon enough sometimes. Other than that it's one of the best point'n'click games I ever played. Recommended.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good remake of a good game, some of the animations do feel really dated, I'm not a huge fan of the character models -I honestly preferred the earlier designs from the concept art-, and the proportions are really off in some scenes. However, the voice acting is great, the music is great, it's easy to learn the controls, I like how you can essentially play the classic version of the game with the push of a button, I like how the classic version can have the voice acting of the Special Edition.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What is now preserved as the hallowed, painstakingly illustrated blueprint for conventional adventure design, accurate to the millimeter... blemished only by a snarky coffee stain from your debbie downer of a contractor. This game's design is so conspicuously sound, presents such low-hanging fruit for any ravenous analyst to pull apart, that fine, I'll grant it some leeway in that direction, no matter how much every part of me fundamentally disagrees with that sham of an "ending". It has…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Kind of a mixed "recommend" here. Love the vibe and the humor as usual. Lots of the game is well done. However, unless you're a moon logic genius, you won't be getting through this without referring to a guide, using the hint system often, or banging your head against a wall for hours. Definitely one of the worst cases of moon logic in this genre I've seen, and I've played quite a few at this point. So recommended if you're OK using the hints a lot or a guide after the first half of the game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Anyone that can play this game organically is a liar. I'm stuck at chapter 3 with a stupid song puzzle, and looking at achievements only 40% of players beat this section. 60% beat chapter one. The puzzles are more intuitive compared to the first game, but not by much. How boomers played this slop is beyond me. Edit: The ending is so bad. Boomer Slop 1/10
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of my all time favorite games. I played the original in the 90's. Still the funniest adventure game out there. You will have so much fun playing this game.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →if you really liked monkey island i'd maybe recommend this but i walked away from it just feeling like it was so much cheaper than the first one
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I know it's classic and a genre staple, but it just rubs me the wrong way.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Look! a three headed monkey! Don't let the seven hours tag fool you. I've played this game on a non-steam version and re-purchased it here... Then speedran it, I guess? Classic point and click adventure game with good sense of humour throughout. If you like point and click and don't already know who Guybrush is he is one of the mainstays and this is the second game in the series.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It occurred to me in this playthrough that I don't really like remastered's graphics. The scale of the characters seemed off, some of the designs are grotesque and a lot of wonderful detail is lost from Peter Chan's original background work. Despite my quibbles with the art style, the game is still a classic, and the voice cast is excellent as always.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Reviewing every game I've played in my Steam Library. Game 49 Excellent, the puzzles are confusing and I need a guide for most of the game past the first act but the option to swap to the old pixel art style (using F1) is the icing on the cake.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A solid sequel that builds on everything great about the original. It’s still very much a product of its time, but the humor, puzzles, and charm hold up well. The SE also enhances the experience with updated visuals and sound while keeping the original soul alive.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Everything in the game is designed to piss you off. The joke is always on the player. Adventure games typically encourage exploration with the world, this was extremely off putting. Even more so than the first in the series.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can understand why newer generations of players aren't chomping at the bit to dig up old point-and-click games and sing their praises, even for social media content. It's because they don't operate on video game logic™, they operate on developer logic™, which, in the old days, wan't based on "logic" at all. In this game's series' case, it was complete cockamamie ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that sortof required you to understand the dev studio to get some sense of an idea on how to complete it. If you never…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My recollection of the series is of diminishing returns with each successive sequel but this one holds up well enough to be worth the time. I remembered a lot more of the first game and very little about this one. There's some vague level of logic to all the puzzles, so, it's frustrating but not as bad as some point-and-clickers of the era got. Hint system and interactable object highlight option included. Developer's commentary too. One can switch between the remake and the original versions…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the best one of the entire series, especially better than that latest ugly nostalgia-fest lame effort!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For many point-and-click enthusiasts, Monkey Island 2 represents the pinnacle of adventure games. While even a semi-competent nitpicker will find a bunch of flaws in this game, its near-mythical reputation is far from unearned. The original version's artwork is mesmerisingly beautiful despite the low resolution. The new HD backgrounds and characters (which are enabled by default) are fairly loyal to the original concept art, although they do lack some of its vivacity and distinctiveness.…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →3 of 5 The puzzles suffered a far worse case of "It doesn't make sense and nothing led me to think this should be the solution but that's how you have to do it anyway." than the first Monkey Island. It also had a worse habit of repeating the same jokes. However, the game does improve on both the graphical, audio (iMUSIC), and mechanical components. It also continues to amuse me with its style and absurdity. The biggest dip in its points comes from the lack of novelty, it being a sequel. And…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →LeChuck’s Revenge takes us back to the world of Monkey Island, this time in search of the treasure of Big Whoop. This adventure sends us to not one, not two, but three different islands, all filled with exciting new puzzles and even more zany characters. We also meet some returning favourites, like the Voodoo Lady and Stan. It’s amazing how many different ideas they managed to pack into this game. Navigating between the islands while trying to solve every puzzle to collect the four treasure…

At its core, the game is about exploration and environmental logic. You navigate richly built scenes where every object can be clicked and investigated, and the information you discover is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Monkey Island 2: Special Edition is a lovingly crafted modernization of one of the most revered point-and-click adventures ever made, successfully bridging the gap between early-1990s design sensibilities and contemporary expectations. Originally released as Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge in 1991, the game is often regarded as the narrative and mechanical high point of the classic Monkey Island saga. This Special Edition preserves the core experience almost entirely intact while enhancing…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It’s great that they apparently took all the criticism directed at the previous remaster to heart. Guybrush looks much better here; his walking animation is a bit goofy (as it needs to match the original walk cycle, which has fewer frames), but it’s clear they wanted to make sure he didn’t look like he was sliding. They even gave him some idle animations. The remastered graphics as a whole are beautiful, with much better redesigns for the characters and fewer liberties taken with the source…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Monkey Island is probably my second favourite game series I've ever seen... Or played, so I'm biased. But having said that, MI2 is an amazing sequel to an already fantastic game, and you should def sink your (monkey) paws into it to experience a hell of a good time.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's near perfect (it has better but still annoying controls) Fun dialogue, entertaining story, good filler, perfect cast of characters, well thought out puzzles and a fantastic ending + the SE graphics look better than they did in first remake, but original ones still look the best and oice over is also on with original graphics unlike in the SoMI which only makes it better (unlike the interface which made me go between the two all the time) Series as a whole only gets up on my list after…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Monkey Island 2 is exactly the game to complete first before giving any opinion on. My early impressions were very positive to the point that I thought it would blow the first game out of the water. In most ways it’s the better game, but I ended up enjoying the first game more after all. It has to do with the ‘open world’ structure coupled with moon logic puzzles. The game allows you to travel between 3 islands for a while, often times you’ll need items from a different island to advance…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If this legendary game (one of my all-time favorites) remains unchanged in substance, the graphic update left me doubtful with its comic book aspect, which was not the original intention. This makes us forget that the 1991 game, in addition to being great, was also beautiful for its time. But what to do? A 3D, open-world Monkey Island 2?? At least it makes finding objects much less painful than in the pixel art of the 90's. Recommended of course.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've played this game in 2010 and got all achievements bar the speedrun one. So I did a quick normal playthrough of the game, using plenty of hints when needed and then a speedrun. I'm not a big fan of this game, but even less so of the remaster. There's plenty wrong with this remaster: - No support for superultrawide, which means that text is so far to the side of the screen you can't select it (luckily you can use numbers to select topics). - There is audio commentary, but it runs on…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a great remaster improving on every aspect of the original. I have watched a streamer play this a few days ago and sadly there are know bugs in this that haven't been fixed for years. For this streamer it meant doing one hour of gameplay again.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wonderful game, but also horrendously difficult! I wanted to beat it by myself, without hints, and it has beaten me instead, at drinking contest. I would never figure this out without taking thorough notes from the beginning, but even then, solution is so unintuitive and convoluted that I could fail anyway. I love the humour, artstyle and special edition voice acting, It's freakin amazing! What is also amazing, is that while checking forums I found out that every person who got stuck, found…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great remake of a classic point and click adventure. Game let's you switch between the classic and the remastered grapphics at any point. Puzzles are really imaginative but it's true that some of them can feel really hard to figure it out. The game includes a clue mechanic to make solving them easier tho. Still one of the most charming games I've ever played with a lot of fun scenes and dialogue options.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I had some trouble solving some of the puzzles, but this is still a fun game nonetheless!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →People commenting its tedious puzzles and nonsense things just have to continue and live in this ♥♥♥♥ period. That was the excat purpose of the game, his demenziality adventure style where you had to use your logic and unlogic and develop some hidden brain part to go on. No guide at the times, i remember we spent 6 month with a friend to finish it when it comes out back in the days. Something that today is completally lost.
