I really hate doing this, but it's one of those rare cases when I feel obligated to leave an unflattering review. On paper, this game couldn't be any more up my alley, mother of all 4x games, million in-depth mechanics, as close to a realistic depiction of solar system wide space economy as you can get without it being just a mission control sim. But all these mechanics are held together by uh... sheer enthusiasm. Took me five campaign restarts to even get to late mid-game, and it initial…

After 2000+ hours spanning early access to first DLC launch, can I recommend this game to anyone save a very small subset of gamers? No, quite simply, because the game does not respect your time. Some light background on the development studio; they rose to prominence with a modification to XCOM EU/EW called "The Long War," which as one might expect, made a difficult game longer, grindier, and more difficult (notably, not more balanced - a successor mod team offered "The Long War: Rebalanced"…

I'm a big fan of grand strategy titles like Hearts of Iron and Crusader Kings. Those games are big, complex, and have huge learning curves. But they at least present you with all of the information you need. Terra Invicta isn't complex, it's just opaque. It is full of hidden rules that are really not fun. You have to play until you discover the rules that are sometimes nonsensical. I keep having to restart after learning game-breaking hidden rules. The whole federation system is an…

This game is actually somewhat challenging for me to recommend to many people. I think this game has something a lot of people have trouble with (as evidenced by some other reviews, which I think are people correctly identifying that this game does not work for them) so I just want to frontload this with some caution for anyone potentially interested in this game. Still, if the idea of this game sounds interesting to you and you have the grit needed to stomach making frequent mistakes or a…

Refunding due to an accessibility issue: Minuscule text size that can't be changed in the settings. There's an option to increase UI size. It barely changes the UI size, and doesn't change the text size (though it makes it blurry). For a game with as much text as I expect this one to have, that's not viable for me.

I just finished my first playthrough of Terra Invicta after roughly 160 hours. For a while, I spent basically every free moment playing it, which makes the thumbs down look a little strange. There is a lot here that I genuinely like. Unfortunately, the further I got, the more the game's pacing, UI, AI and performance wore me down. By the credits, finishing felt less satisfying than exhausting. So, the good, the bad and the ugly: The Good Terra Invicta has an excellent core concept. You…

I wanted to love Terra Invicta, but I can't in good faith recommend the game. Over successive rebalances, patches, and new versions as they work towards release (now at Release Candidate 1 at the time of writing), it honestly feels like the Developers are playing against the players more than anything. This is supposed to be hard. That makes sense. A technologically superior enemy of this kind should absolutely wipe the floor with you for a long time, and you should need to be very smart in…

I really want to like this game and it fits into a particular niche I've wanted, but the developers have the same "no fun allowed" and the nerf everything useful to the player mentality that the Helldivers 2 devs have. There are 7 human factions, 4 of which are ultimately anti-alien, 1 seeking to escape Earth, 2 pro-alien. However they are completely useless in actually fighting the aliens and act more against the player than anything, EXCEPT if you are playing the Servants in which case…

Where to begin. This game has fundamentally wrong gameplay design decisions, that this game feels like a painful chore rather than a game. Granted, it has interesting game concept and topic where you united and lead humanity against an unwinnable alien foe while competing other human factions for space resources. but this is all ruined due to how incompetent and stubborn the devs are. 1. chore This game has little respect for your time. For starter, this game is a chore. Imagine this. The…

Find Xcom's tactical battles repetitive and boring after a while? Wish you could focus on research and grand strategy without stopping to clear out your 250th crashed UFO? This is the game for you. Imagine if you could zoom out of Xcom's groescape and interact with the whole solar system. Build orbital stations, asteroid/planetary bases, and fleets of ships that adhere to Newtonian physics. Pull the strings and manipulate nations from the shadows. Assassinate or imprison rivals.…

I have played Terra Invicta for a long time, because I love the setting and I always hoped there would be a deep and complex experience if I gave it a chance. I was wrong. Ultimately it is a simple game that obscures its rules and tacks on unnecessary complexity to appear deep. What annoys me the most is that the design philosophy wildly swings between hardcore realism and illogical gameyness, depending on what is the least fun for the player in that particular situation. There are three…

I'm on my fourth playthrough and while the first 3 during early access where fun, the current one is an annoying frustrating slog. Part of that is due to changes made compared to earlier versions and part is due to somewhat bad luck on this run combined with poor balancing. Combining countries into large supernations was one of the fun aspects in the mid and late game. This was nerfed several times since the earliest versions and the new "hostile claims" mechanic finally makes this so slow…

Just saw the 6 score by IGN... I strongly disagree. This is a complex game with multi-layered systems that together do a good job at representing an ambitious alien invasion / infiltration narrative that eventually turns into the beginning of a space opera RTS a la Expanse. It is hyper-ambitious and while it fails in the combination of some mechanics (particularly the transition stages) It is more of a 8/10, reaching to 9 in some aspects of gameplay. If you like / have the time and patience…

This game has a level of mechanical complexity and emergent strategy that I have not seen rivaled by any other game. It is essentially an illuminati 4x, space colonization, and space combat sim stapled together. This game's learning curve is incredibly steep, and a playthrough can run up to 100 hours to completion. That kind of commitment isn't for everyone, but if you're on board for that it is an incredible experience. My one critique: Devs, you have got to drop the war with minmaxxers.…

I’ve waited until the game was released to give it a fair review, I played the original demo a while ago and thought the game would be great at this point, and I can’t help but feel like I’m doing a disservice to the developers by admitting that it’s still not something I’d recommend. But the publishers and developers are asking for reviews and I do want to give my honest thoughts on this game and how it plays. Playing "whack-a-mole" with the factions is ANNOYING. "Ideas can't be killed" YES THEY CAN A lot of ideas have been forgotten. A lot of factions IRL just went extinct and forgotten. You should be able to destroy a faction and it should take YEARS before the "idea/sentiment" reemerges, forms a new faction and it gets a person(agent/councilor) who "does somethign about it". It is fun at the start of the game to have this constant fight over nations, but after a while it is very…

If you love space/first contact, shoot. Hard pass for casuals. Desperately needs an improved tutorial. First guided steps are fine, but soon you're off the deep end with a lot of questions. Player also has no idea if they want many/few countries in the beginning. Never tells player to seek councilors with high PER - meaning any country w 4 control points (part of the tutorial) ends up <15% success roll to take - game never tells if councilors stack with that mission, but lets player roll…

I really, REALLY want to like this game. The earth influence system is fun, I enjoy vying for nations and developing resources. The intrigue of kidnapping enemy councilors and turning them as a mole. Everything to do with the earth layer is sublime. I really don’t want to give this game a thumbs up - but giving it a thumbs down would also feel unfair. So here we go. TL;DR: The early and mid‑game is fantastic. Unfortunately, in more than 30 years of playing PC and console games, I’ve never had my motivation collapse as quickly in the endgame as it did with Terra Invicta. So what’s the issue? The core gameplay revolves around cycles in which your agents (the so‑called councillors) carry out actions on Earth. You assign tasks, confirm…

This game is not for everyone. In many ways it is spreadsheet gaming. Solar system is easier to navigate via lists of planetary bodies then overview. Fleets and armies are more stats then units, their orders are not point and click but menus to make them to go to certain orbits or regions. Interface in many ways is clunky, design quite outdated and a lot of obvious QoL missing. But for those who are OK with those drawbacks, this game might just be a real treasure. It is complex, with…

Crusader Kings with an X-Com skin. --- The game play is heavily rooted in the grand strategy model, while the story is an X-Com derivative influenced by Hearts of iron politics. Overall I have to say the game feels like it was made in 2006 and not 2026. I don't mean it in a bad way, but that it's actually more substance over style. Rather than flashier games that may be style over substance. They didn't shy away from deep mechanics or overly complex interfaces. You can get lost in menus and…

I simply cannot with this game anymore. I have done many runs now, and always what sets me off is some obscure mechanic the devs bake in with little to no warning. The game explains very little in terms of progression path or what you should be doing at any moment, and that'd be completely fine by me if it wasn't also riddled with small little things that have a big impact. I really want to like this game, but the intentionally obscured mechanics lead to way too many 'screw you, that's why' moments. If you look up a recent(!) meta guide on how exactly you are supposed to win, you can play, as the older 'tricks' are patched out. If not, you will struggle, lose, and rage quit. The worst part is that your mistake was a few hours ago, so you basically have to play the last 4-6 hours again. Not to mention the other factions feel like helpless idiots, so you spend the…

First playthrough, tried and failed to get a foothold in China. Fell behind the other factions, got my teeth kicked in. Second playthrough, consolidated the EU, overextended mission control, saw all my space assets fall apart, got my teeth kicked in. Third playthrough, started doing well, upset the aliens too early, got my teeth kicked in. Fantastic game. I will continue playing and getting my teeth kicked in in new and creative ways.

The pitch for the game is what if X-Com were a grand strategy game that took everything into space, then merge in the orbital mechanics of Kerbal Space Program and the combat of Nebulous Fleet Command. The scope is astonishing. And everything is well done. Very minor UI issues, but once you get used to them, it all works fine. Highly recommend if you are a strategy game sicko like me.

If the tutorial is impossible that's not a skill issue, it's a discovery or balance issue. The tutorial should teach a new player how to play the game. This game's tutorial teaches new players not to play.

Bloody well done game. The game is polished and made with love. I strongly suggest if you ever start playing this to: 1. Play on the easiest difficulty. It isn't easy and don't be ashamed, It will be a long campaign and you need this. Unless you are unemployed and have nothing better to do than play this 8 hours a day for a couple of weeks. 2. Don't think of it as a campaign to only defeat the aliens. Think of it more as a sandbox. Build up and colonize. Defend your stuff, etc. 3. Why wage…

I tried so hard to like this game, i put in the effort to learn it's janky systems and i played on the easiest setting and even tweaked some to make the game actually playable, but 200 hours in and i still cannot finish a single game. There are so many ways the game kicks you in the balls to the point where im confused why i even bothered. If you are a fan of science fiction games, Stellaris or any other sci-fi game would give a more satisfying and pleasant experience. But there are very few…

Has potential. Things move very, VERY slow. I find that most of the game is this sort of circular activity of defending a nation, losing a nation, getting it back. Spinning wheels and not really getting anywhere.

Terra Invicta is my new autistic map game obsession, but the community is so small the biggest tutorials and playthroughs on YT are like 5k views tops. And obv there's barely anything on advanced strats, and that, combined with the fact a campaign can take like 80 hours, is demoralizing lmao.

If you spent years getting your teeth kicked in by Pavonis Interactive's Long War mods for XCOM, you already know the pedigree here. When I heard they were making a standalone grand strategy game, I went in expecting that same brand of tactical brutality. I thought I was prepared. I was wrong. The Scope Terra Invicta is staggeringly ambitious. While it starts on a familiar geopolitical world map where you vie for control of nations, that is merely the tutorial. Before you know it, you are…

I'm going to start and end this review with the same statement: I cannot recommend this game enough. If you're wondering? The answer is yes. It's worth it. A quick summary, without spoilers. You begin the game focused on Earth. Aliens have crashed. You're a shadowy organization with a general ethos that directs how you'll deal with the new Xeno threat/divine beings/whatever. You've got to rally enough resources together, puppet mastering countries to achieve your goals. You will send…
