What people are saying

Most players love this quirky extraction roguelite, but some worry about balance changes.

The game is widely praised as a unique blend of extraction shooter and roguelite, with many calling it addictive and a breath of fresh air. Players highlight the satisfying gunplay, art style, and the tension of high-stakes loot runs. [4][5][12]

However, some players criticize recent developer decisions that shift the game away from a power fantasy toward a harder, more trade-off-based experience. Others note missing features like inventory sorting or suspend-run options, and a few find the difficulty punishing. [27][32][33][34][36]

Praised addictive gameplay loop · unique genre blend · satisfying gunplay
Criticised balance changes · missing features · difficulty spikes

We're early in the development of a new game with the working title "Sulfur" (or "Silenus"), an investigative mystery set on a string of islands along the U.S. southern coast. We'll share updates here. We also post detailed dev logs on Patreon & are very grateful to our friends and supporters.

Ah, it's helldivers all over again. You make a game that lets players grind and gives them the reward of a power fantasy of bullying PVE enemies. Then out of nowhere the developers decide they want the game to become a hardcore experience. Fail to understand why people enjoyed the game to start with. The mark of this specifically is releasing the game with ways to become very powerful. Then introducing slowly much much weaker stuff over time. Every player asks. "Well this new stuff sucks its…

Sulfur is a mixed game for me. Overall I gave it a thumbs down but I want to clarify that you might still have fun playing sulfur, it's not an iredeemable game. Before getting into a detailed breakdown, I'll give you the 10 second version, I believe Sulfur is fundamentally a victim of early access where the game has not had the space to reconsider, expand and refine freely. Some of the design in sulfur is either contradictory or confused as a result, and instead of fixing the foundation the…

As of the latest update (Qiosk's Plenty Update), the devs have removed a really cool feature for the sake of "optimization", specifically, realistic/picture-in-picture scopes were replaced with a basic "increase fov to zoom in" effect. While the game itself is excellent, I worry that the devs may end up making decisions that lead to it getting worse over time, instead of better. If you're willing to take a chance on an early access game, I absolutely recommend you get it. But otherwise, you…

I like this game, but I bought it with glee when I saw so many customisation options for many weapons. I was sure there will be many viable ways to build your weapon to win. I was wrong. More than 80% of scrolls that induce major change to weapon is just bad and makes weapons worse than empty upgrade slot. There are many scopes/sights in game, sadly they have uneven stats attached so you either roll with best stat or one you actually like. There are many barrel attachments, I only used three,…

Sulfur is in a weird state right now. The game is not fun? But I enjoy playing it. What it boils down to is in the latest patch, and with how the development philosophy has been shifting, it goes towards less of a power fantasy (make the best gun you want) to a more hardcore game based on tradeoffs. In order to get a (good?) gun in Sulfur, you need to: 1. Rank up your gun by grinding it for a while. 2. Buy and apply oils/scrolls that you think is a good build idea. 3. Test it if it works (as…

i personally did not enjoy this game, but i can tell that it is of incredibly high quality and it was mainly just a skill issue on my part. This game annoys the hell outta me but still its just good. You cant argue that something that is good isn't good, and I'm not dumb enough to try to argue that. so, if you enjoy annoyingly difficult games that will beat you up to hell and back, whilst having a unique and beautiful art style, at the very least try it.

Sulfur is a flawless combination of two genres I love: The Binding of Isaac-style rogue-lites and looter-shooters like the Borderlands. It features a unique art style, blending 3D environments with 2D "vector" sprite characters. It’s a breath of fresh air in the rogue-lite scene because it raises the stakes in the most interesting way: there is no form of meta-progression other than the tools and gear you scavenge during runs and store at your home base, alongside your own knowledge of the…

Possibly my GOTY for 2026, no joke After a little learning curve this game has become somewhat of a dangerous addiction to me, in a good way. This has everything that a good FPS need to be. I'd forgotten how good it feel to check corners, adjusting my game play to each gun, having fun just going at my own speed, and the absolute satisfying sound of different guns. The crafting dynamic is phenomenal. Being able to use an oil to help reload a massive machine gun almost comically fast, or…

The core of the game is amazing, but the developers have been consistently making nerfs that are bewildering. I'll use two of the most recent changes at the time of writing this as an example: 1: Melee kills no longer reward the gun you're holding EXP if you haven't shot the enemy with the gun at least once. This essentially makes grinding weapon levels (something you'll be doing a LOT, as the game highly incentivizes maxing out a guns levels through metaprogression and the extensive weapon…

7/10 Game is pve extraction shooter for people that don't have enough time for pvp but like the genre I would recommendd it 100%. As for someone just getting into the genre game gets difficult if you don't have a solid build post dungeon. You need to farm a lot to just play later stages. Not talking about the endless mode because I didn't even get there. Overall nice game, with good soundtrack but slow progression I think if they buff builds or loot itll be much better.

SULFUR is the kind of experience which leaves that magical taste in your tongue. It's a combination of looter-shooter and rogue-lite at heart, with a mix of well executed mechanics taken from both genres. It can be a slow, relaxing experience of running through dungeons on your own pace or a hardcore bullet frenzy; making it a uniquely pleasant experience that flows according to what the player has in mind. Only downvoting for endless. The base game is a PvE extraction-like. After beating the base game, you unlock endless mode, which is a rogue-like spin on the gameplay. For the most part it's ok, but getting to stage 20 takes 4-8 hours. For the life of me I can't understand why they would lock an achievement behind an 8 hour session. Especially when the rest of the achievements are basically, "stare mindlessly at your screen. Congrats." One of the achievements is literally: "hold your breath…

Devs decided to, in a single patch, ruin their game by unilaterally nerfing to hell and back every single thing players liked and used, in a SINGLEPLAYER game. They could have buffed the other oils and attachments to get them on par with the rest, they could have tweaked the best "meta" oils to remove stuff such as infinite ammo builds to promote build variety, but they decided the nuclear option was the best option. So now, if you decide to upgrade your weapons, you simply don't get to hit…

Don't let the graphics fool you into thinking this is one of those 'boomer shooters'/'half likes' that have been coming out in the indie FPS market recently. The art style is lowkey but appealing, and it might be the 'worst' (or least good) part about this game IMO, despite looking good still. The gunplay is really good. Location based damage with weapons that have 'tactical shooter' amounts of recoil and spread. Insane levels of customization, and neither the game progression nor the player…

But it has to be said how each of Sulfurs influences are so well implemented and to the right level that makes everything so engaging.
