Welcome to match 2 of "Alfred the Great" (playtest phase, forthcoming from Decision Games Strategy & Tactics 372). I have the Vikings this round, @nopipbutcpip.bsky.social is playing the Anglo-Saxon side. Today we're experimenting with several optional rules (pillage and Danegeld).

My Napoleonic gaming 'moment' is in full swing. Today'game: Reves de Gloire, a solitaire game recently published in Strategy & Tactics. Rules need interpretation but otherwise it's pretty good on the emergent narrative front, particularly if you know a bit about the period.

Today's #boardwargame session; first playtest match of Decision Games' upcoming "Alfred the Great" (Strategy & Tactics 372). I have the Anglo-Saxons, @nopipbutcpip.bsky.social has the Vikings. It's the Viking playerturn of Game Turn 1. The Anglo-Saxons successfully cleared a town...

...that the only way to get a feedback proposal passed by the Strategy & Tactics readership (in SPI's 1970's glory days) was for the game to involve NATO, nuclear weapons or Nazis in some way.

Weird Game Designer Facts Albert Aurelius Nofi I met Al Nofi at SPI, where he was for many years associate editor of Strategy & Tactics magazine, and also the designer of many tabletop wargames. But he was a scholar, not just a game designer, receiving a PHD from CUNY in military history in 1991.

I remember there was an old Strategy & Tactics magazine Vietnam war game that used fake unit counters to represent hidden Vietcong movements so that you wouldn't know where they really were until they attacked

Finished : Marvel's Midnight Sun Another flawed game I really enjoyed, with lot of clear love for the source material and absolutely engaging combat. A strange Strategy-Tactics and RPG hybrid, hard to describe but addictive to play. A sequel would be a classic. #MegaMidnightSuns

Yet it's still a popular subject for #boardwargames. One of the games @amfisher.bsky.social gave me in January was Strategy & Tactics issue 253 whose included game was on this battle. Yes, the Soviet defensive lines are VERY prominent.

If you care to search my timeline, I have quite a few posts. I am currently playtesting Decision Games' upcoming "Napoleonic World War" (for Strategy & Tactics magazine). TL: DR - l'Empereur is doing a lot better in-game than historically in the first two matches.

@nopipbutcpip.bsky.social and I, for instance, playtested a game for Decision Games (originally for the now-defunct Modern War magazine, ultimately published in Strategy & Tactics) on the 1990's Bosnian War. The game was a good simulation, but definitely NOT "fun" to play...

SPI also published several wargames covering various facets of the Vietnam War during the early 1970's. "Grunt", released in 1971 as a Strategy & Tactics magazine game & later updated as "Search and Destroy", may be the first commercial squad-level wargame. boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/70...

...now carry list prices of $50 a pop. The really interesting thing is, when inflation is factored in, a Strategy & Tactics magazine with game isn't that much more expensive in 2025 than it was in 1977, when I got seriously into the hobby as a high school freshman. A boxed wargame, meanwhile...
