Spies in Disguise
Super spy Lance Sterling and scientist Walter Beckett are almost exact opposites. Lance is smooth, suave and debonair. Walter is… not. But what Walter lacks in social skills he makes up for in smarts and invention, creating the awesome gadgets Lance uses on his epic missions. But when events take an unexpected turn, Walter and Lance suddenly have to rely on each other in a whole new way. From TMDB

And I don't say it just because they picked up the slack on Nimona and the final cut shares the same directors as Spies in Disguise, Blue Sky's last film.
unlabelledView post →That's how we got Spies in Disguise, a film where Tom Holland turns Will Smith into a pigeon. It has zero of the story, characters, or art style of the original. The movie was inherited by Disney in the buyout, and forgotten. The indie animator got rich and kept making art. Happy ending.

Smith turns into a pigeon (better than when he was a fish). Holland is much like Spider-Man and that he is socially awkward but a tech genius.

unlabelledView post →Very sad to live around the time this news was announced. Spies In Disguise was a good film, and the future of BlueSky could've been bright had Disney not made this terrible decision. I'm glad what's left of BlueSky survived against all odds and became an incredible film because of it.

unlabelledView post →No one probably remembers Spies in Disguise, but it was honestly a solid swan song film for Bluesky; definitely recommend watching it at some point! It’s also hilarious how the message of the film is basically: “Maybe we don’t ACTUALLY have to kill people.” 😀

unlabelledView post →Finally watched Spies in Disguise. Yet another movie with a POC stay a lot of time transformed into an animal (not as much as in any Disney movie tho, but still). My second complain is they fed bread to the birds. Other than that... I loved it, but I'm a simple woman: I see pigeon, I like.

unlabelledView post →That’s true, I forgot about Princess and the Frog and Spies in Disguise. I feel like another reason for this could be for marketing reasons, executives thinking kids would only watch a movie if it has talking animals? Your point could be true too unfortunately. It’s a real darn shame for sure.
unlabelledView post →They did have variety. They made Robots, Horton Hears a Who, Rio, Epic, The Peanuts Movie, Ferdinand, Spies in Disguise and were working on Nimona and the musical Foster when they were shut down. And pre-merger, they were working on a film about Ancient Egypt, but Fox decided they weren't interested

unlabelledView post →What’s crazy is they used to have a studio called BLUE SKY that shut down in 2021 they produced stuff like Ice Age and Robots and their very last film was Spies in Disguise if you find the time watch it or at least read the synopsis it’s about a spy and a young guy that invents weapons for the spies

unlabelledView post →While I personally connect to Nick and Troy's other film for Blue Sky Studios, Spies in Disguise, moreso than this film, it's undeniable how well-crafted and important this film is both as a work of art and a great piece of LGBTQ+ representation. It's definitely a highlight of 2023 in animation.

Complete tonal mismatch, more butthole jokes than pigeon jokes, huge leaps in logic, nonsensical moral dilemma, annoying cast I don’t care for, and only rarely funny. What a MESS.

unlabelledView post →I hope the girl (whose name is Mabel, BTW) isn't black, as that would make this the latest of an annoying trend of POC having lead roles in animated films where they spend a sizable chunk of the film in a creature's body (Princess and the Frog, Soul, Spies in Disguise).
