It was released in the developers’ native language of Portuguese, but is now fully updated for a more International audience with English voice-overs and subtitles. It is overflowing with creativity and an absolute blast to play, with plenty of replayability, all DLC’s included upon purchasing the game, and with a fair price of $AU22.95, I highly recommend it. Pros Humorous…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you're going to have musical narration for the whole game, maybe you should hire someone who can sing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm a english speaking brazilian, so I tried the game in both languages. Honestly? I can't tell which one is worse. Couldn't possibly stomach playing the full game with that voice over. Then I tried disabling the narration and it dawn on me. Without its' gimmick, this is just a very poor and generic plataformer. I really can't recommend this to anyone. It's not well executed enough in any aspect.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →30 seconds in, I allready feel sick of the horrible singing voice, then I find out its like that trough the whole game. There are far more comfortable ways of torture

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The singing-gimmick is interesting at first but very annoying when you can't skip/fast forward and there's A LOT of places where you'll just stand still and wait for the song to finish to let you proceed. Especially if you die or play a level again to collect secrets and you already know what's coming. Some areas are also unnecessarily slow. The lyrics were somewhat shoe horned into fitting the melody. In the beginning it was kind of fun but it grew old quickly. I kind of expected more lyrics…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Plataforma musical em português e inglês. // Musical platformer in Portuguese and English. Translating rhymes without losing context is hard, but they did it quite well! The narrator sings describing the path and what you do. The game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The thought of hearing that annoying narrator singing the entire time was enough to drive me away after 20 minutes. I really should have watched the trailer before impulse buying this game. Why hire a guy and then have him do such a nasally voice? And the lyrics aren't very clever either, which could have saved this game even if the voice actor was hard to listen too. I tried turning off the singing, but after removing the core gimmick there just isn't much left behind besides a rather bare…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Funny and interesting singing gimmick let down by the actual gameplay. I felt the platforming was just okay, but after the cave level introduced one cheap or annoying mechanic after another, I didn't feel like continuing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is pretty fun once you shut off the singing inner monologue (Settings -> Voice, move slider fully to the left). I don't think I've ever seen a game's core "gimmick" be so unbelievably awful, and constant, before... while otherwise making a pretty fun and enjoyable experience.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Thought I'd leave a review for this game although I usually do this for lesser known titles I enjoyed. But while Songs for a Hero has more than 3000 reviews, around 90% of these are in Brazilian Portuguese, because the developers are from Brazil and the game was only available in Portuguese in the beginning. Songs for a Hero is a 2D platformer that is somewhat reminiscent of games like Wonderboy in Monster World. You unlock abilities throughout the story that you need to progress but that can…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Those songs are just UNBEARABLE. Play this only if you have zero musical knowledge.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →a fun platformer, the singing never got tired for me (except for when i went for the hitless bosses achievements) you get a lot of fun power-ups but some of them are A LOTT stronger then the rest (your shield is useles for most of the game while the boomerang and invincibility are almost always your go to in boss rooms) a positive is that the potions are super handy, there is also a lot of side content and secrets a strong recoment if you don't find the voice annoying
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gameplay is fine. However, I can't stand this singing, awful voice!!!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Under the gimmick narration, it is a simple 2D platformer. So it could be boring if you get annoyed by the singing, or boring because the game itself is very simple. But still, the gimmick is unique, so thumbs up!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My kids love watching me play this one. It's a fun game and the singing is very entertaining.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Playing this game is like driving a rusty nail into your ear. No wait, a nail hammered into your ear would be more tolerable than this incessant, completely unfunny singing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →oh my god his voice is painful to listen to. JUST SHUT THE HELL UP.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cute, yet surprisingly challenging, little platformer/musical that has your character narrating everything you do and see in song! Great concept that is executed perfectly and doesn't take itself seriously. --- It's challenging yet not frustratingly difficult. I suck at platformers so you might have an easier time than I did, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and found it a perfectly balanced between not too hard but not too easy. I highly recommend you play with a controller (as you should all…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →finished the entire 1st world with the game muted wondering why weird text saying what i was doing was on screen at all times. what a weird game, dont think im gonna finish it... goes to write a review of the game...wait this game has MUSIC!!!?? unmutes, what a weird game. i think ima finish the entire thing gameplay wise 4/10 random guy singing random ♥♥♥♥ slightly off key 11/10 + you later unlock 2nd jump and a dash, makes the game more fun - takes ages to unlock 2nd jump and dash
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cured my depression. 10/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gameplay is just ok-ish and the difficulty is not very challenging, but I expected this tbh. Bought the game because of the dynamic soundtrack/singing and thought this would make up for it. Unfortunately, the actor's voice is just terribly annoying. The lyrics make less and less sense the further you progress and the whole soundtrack in combination with the singing always sounds the same. Both intonation and rythm are really bad in some places, too. They could've made so much more cool things…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't understand the love for it. It's an Ok platformers but I thought it'd be fun with the singing, but they sound awful and it grated me so much I had to silence them within an hour. Completed it but it's 6 hours of my life I'll not get back.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Songs for a Hero had potential, but it could have been polished up quite a bit. The "reactive singing" gimmick was unique and cool at first, but it grew stale pretty quickly and wasn't super well done in terms of lyrics or how reactive it was (Though it didn't help that the game was mostly linear). The platforming and level design were pretty bare-bones and unpolished - There were a lot of annoying mechanics (Especially in the desert level) and "so close" jumps that could have been greatly…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wonderful little game. Very reminiscent of Wonderboy in Monsterland, but is, IMO, more fun. Couple of tips though, when you are working through the first few enemy monsters, you will need to make use of the skill you will learn earlier in that level. In particular, the lava spider needs to have its armour smashed with your overhead shield block before it can be hurt. It's not immediately obvious in my opinion. Also, this is entirely personal, but I wasn't a fan of the singing. Despite the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The singing is entirely superficial acknowledgment of gaming tropes. It's the laziest, most shallow meta-referential humor. It's the musical equivalent of "Hello fellow gamers, do you remember videogames?" for the entire duration. The story is also absolutely nonsensical, and I played to see the ending which was uh, not really an ending. Or at least, I mean, the narrative didn't conclude in a meaningful or satisfying fashion. Context was not provided for the many questions the game brought to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL:DR - It lost it's appeal pretty early, but I still reccomend it to others. Pros: + Very unique premise, the Hero singing his adventure. + Nice and colourful graphics. + The games systems work well, it's not buggy, unforgivingly difficult or broken. CONS: - Really slow paced platforming action. - The early levels I played were too familiar, and just seemed unispired. - The Hero's singing voice may get grating. Overall, a simplistic platformer with a fun gimmick that works well but…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is awesome!!! I love the musical elements and all the funny jokes. I don't like that sometimes there are cuss-words in the lyrics but that's one of the only things i don't like.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Songs for a Hero is a generic platformer that is a waste of time and misuses its one gimmick. The gameplay is very simplistic to start: Jump, swing sword, and use shield to block. There are 9 worlds consisting of typically 3 levels plus a boss. You gain some new powerup for worlds 1-7 such as charging up to shoot a fireball from your sword, invisibility, swimming, dash, etc. You have lives in this, but enemies, environments and bosses are so non-challenging that you'll rarely die unless you're…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The idea behind the game is really good. The dynamic vocal singing what happens in the game is something that makes the game much more interesting. Also, the funny lyrics and the nice melody make the soundtrack great. And so is the gameplay. It reminds a lot some classic games from the past. The controls are good, they aren't complicated. The game is challenging and fun to play, you can expect many hours playing and singing along with the Hero in his journey to save the princess.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A masterpiece really. Everyone should give it a go!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The lyrics for the songs in this game are super funny! This game is a lot of fun!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think the whole musical aspect is funny and well done, too bad the gameplay is extremely basic and uninteresting.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Creative, fun and clever. This game is a MUST-BUY. The game already includes all dlcs. In the begining I did though it was a bit simple, but each new level suprised me with something I was not expecting and it only got better and better. The end-game DLCs are truly masterpieces.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's an original idea
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A pretty good platformer with an excellent musical soundtrack... in Portuguese. It's pretty meh in English until you reach the postgame (epilogue / Songs for the Dead / Samba for a Hero) part, but even so, I found it very enjoyable. For most of the game, the difficulty isn't so much difficulty as finding all of the hidden collectibles, but thankfully the game doesn't lock things behind 100% collection, so it's quite playable for both collectathon fans and normal platformer fans. Recommended,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Had fun in the start of the game, as the game progresses, the singing becomes very monotonous and boring. The stages doesn't feel that fun, every stage looks the same but with a different color, feels repetitive.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played this a while ago and went back to play the dlc (included in this edition) The songs can be pretty funny and its a pretty solid standard platformer with some fun abilities to use such as temporary invisible/invisibility where you can't attack at the same time.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I lasted 11 minutes. The lyrics are great, but man, what an annoying, obnoxious voice. I would recommend listening to a video recording of the game prior to buying this game. This way, if you don't like the voice, you can avoid wasting some money.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Finish everything in 10 hrs, great game!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game, which I have been playing since before the English release, captured my attention from the beginning. What a unique concept, expertly executed. My only complaint is that there is still no way to listen to the original (Portuguese) singing, but with English subtitles. To me, the English sung version does not sound as good. Not that it is bad, but the original is better in my opinion. The gameplay is fun, and I would recommend playing this game regardless.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I play with Portuguese audio, it's a very fun game.
- Musicas otimas! Viciantes - Não perde a essencia da "lenda do heroi" - Otimas referencias (Muitas delas inclusives os trocadalhos!…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The main gimmick of Songs for a Hero is that the hero will constantly sing about his adventure during gameplay, reflecting what you are doing as a player. That is to say, the lyrics will adapt to everything that happens in the game. It's very dynamic, and the lyrics are always quite amusing, both in the original Portuguese and in English; the game was very well translated. The 2D platforming gameplay may seem very simple in the first few levels, but you gradually unlock new abilities over the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Songs for a Hero – Definitive Edition is one of the most distinctive indie platformers of the past decade. Developed by the Brazilian studio Dumativa in collaboration with the Castro Brothers, it takes the familiar 2D platforming formula and transforms it through a fully dynamic musical narration. Instead of background music merely setting the mood, the hero continuously sings about everything happening on screen—your successes, mistakes, delays, and even moments of indecision. The result is a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a pretty positive game with a simple plot. The trick of this game is voicing all the actions of the character with a song, you can say it turned out to be a musical game. Definitely worth to get acquainted with this game)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A fun concept for someone who likes platformers and musicals, but the songs and singing aren't great and the platforming is incredibly basic.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I still have 24/44 balloons left to blow for each subscriber, but that number can increase with more potential subs to increase the subathon timer! 😯 Currently on a 15-minute break, but will be back soon with Songs for a Hero: Definitive Edition. 😁
unlabelledView post →What starts off as charming did become annoying. I do like that you can turn the singing off - which I did for a few stages to give myself a break - but I was glad to have turned it back on again. I found the final world's exciting and the vocals-on enhanced that experience. I'm currently have a lot of fun in post-game. Plenty of secret encounters to find and collectables to hoard. Plus, the included DLC adds creative new side-adventures I've just barely scratched the surface of. I'm very…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm flabbergasted, this game is WAY MUCH BETTER than i expected. The songs are too good, fun story, real fun gameplay and it's retro looks give a good nostalgia. Come on non-brazilians, give it a try, the english translation is AMAZING, I just had to replay it in english just to listen to it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The gameplay is safe and generic, the story (what little there is) explains nothing, and the singing sucks.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →sorry but it is a childish game... may if i were 10 yo i'd have liked this.... plus it is not a fun game, too simple I think. well, but it it is a little funny. 4/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Failed experiment. Despite huge amount of work for different musical stylizations for each level and gameplay features, at some point player stands before a choice, wether to focus on singing or arcade gameplay. Singing becomes boring, and gameplay suffers from inelegant, too oldchool design - some elements that should be hard are too easy and vice versa, very easy level with one frustrating moment, unclear mechanics (its totally unclear what can be blocked by shield and what can't, for…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Was in tomb on-top ledge, saw a secret passage to my left and npc to my right. I figured I'd talk to the npc first then check out secret after. However after talking to npc the game forced me to jump off ledge causing me to bypass secret i found. Hate when games take control away for no reason other than to punish you for arbitrary decisions. The singing which had been humorous previously became a grating taunting melody when it became clear the game was going to work against my objective to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a one trick pony, if you don't like the singing there is nothing else to like. And who rates these games positive only 60% of people got the first ability which you get about 15 minutes in.
