What people are saying
Mixed reception: some enjoy the sequel, but many cite bugs and abandonment.
Some players enjoy the game, praising its added features and depth compared to the original. One player says it's "so much more detail then the original" and prefers the added features like seasons and pets. Another notes that "the difficulty is definitely there, but I'm really enjoying it." [3][11]
However, many players criticize the game for being buggy and abandoned. One player states it's "a broken mess since closed beta. Now abandoned." Another warns that "frequent game breaking bugs still exist that can softlock saves" and alleges that the developers have abandoned the game. Some also note that the game feels unfinished and not worth full price. [20][19][16]

60 of 189 · most liked firstSheltered 1 was great, didn't have many games out there that had this type of base build and exploration. So picked up Sheltered 2. Unfortunately, only after a year of release the dev team stopped all updated. Msg from the Dev's on Oct 2022 below; --------- We can only apologise for the lack of communications from us recently. It wasn't our intention to keep everyone in the dark, but it has been a turbulent time for us. The launch of Sheltered 2 was very negatively received, and for good…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →ABANDONED I feel it is my duty to warn potential buyers not to buy this game because as everyone is saying it is 'Abandoned'. I LOVED the first game so much I bought the second when it first came out. That was a mistake.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →No longer updated. Devs abandoned this with no ceremony. Frequent game breaking bugs still exist that can softlock saves. They've also banned people for asking about updates on their discord with no warning. Overall: unfinished game and unethical business practices.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Huge potential, sadly, a broken mess since closed beta. Now abandoned. Avoid! What a shame.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →its honestly such a shame what happened with both this game and the developers of the game first things first.. the game, i personally quite like it, as someone who has watched a ton of lets plays of the first game, and have 100% it and done everythin in the first game in one run.. the sequel feels quite alot like the first one, alot of stuff have improved since then, however the thing alot of people dont like is how they went from a 2D pixel artstyle, to a completely 3D experience, i will…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this game has been abandoned for a long time now. there was a roadmap planned, until Team17 abandoned the dev team and the franchise. without the publisher backing, the dev team didnt have enough resources into developing the game further, since they already spent years in development hell trying to make this 3D sequel. its hard for me to say this, but avoid at all costs. if it's on sale for more than 80%, then maybe try it. Sheltered scratched an itch for me. the itch for playing…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Loved the first Sheltered, and I really enjoyed playing this game. Then I encountered the "soft block" aka horrible bugs late in the game that made it impossible to progress or complete. Been waiting for an update for 2 years to fix these bugs but this game has been abandoned. Such a shame as it had potential.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is basically a '3d' version of the original Sheltered, with a few changes in the terrain and whatnot. I got it because I absolutely loved the original Sheltered. It was one of the first games I just had to get every achievement for. So when I heard a sequel had come out at some point in the last few years I was genuinely excited to see what they'd come up with. Here are my thoughts... While the original wasn't what I would call a 'fast' game by any stretch of the imagination, it never…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TLDR: I loved the first game and was desperate for this to be good. It wasn’t. General Thoughts/Overview: The Sheltered series is a bit like the sims, if your sim was stuck in a post-apocalypse where they needed to fight racoons for scraps. (Sadly, there are no racoons, or scraps, in sheltered 2.) I was desperate to like this game. So much so I’ve put in double the hours than the original. “Just a bit longer, and it’ll get better.” I kept saying to myself. “It feels a bit like the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Promises, promises.. Do not buy. At the time of review, game is very much abandoned. Unless devs come back, this review will stay negative. Loved the first game, thought the second one will expand upon things. Instead they abandoned it in a state of disrepair.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game and roadmap was abandoned
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't buy this game. It constantly crashes and is filled with bugs that will never be fixed since the devs abandoned it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is not worth the fiver I paid. I seldom see this bugged a game. It also seems this is abandonware, which is a shame. DO NOT BUY it is TRULY as bad as everyone is saying!! It is not worth to play even if free. I am sorry. I will change this review if a miracle happens and the development continues.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game had potential but the devs left it to rot. It could've very easily been saved with modding support tho. Don't waste your money, just get the first game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →only played a couple minutes and it was full of bugs. by other reviews it doesnt look like im missing out either. its a shame because i sunk hours into the original sheltered and a proper sequel has so much potential, but this looks like early acsess abandonware. RIP. play sheltered 1, not this.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY! I bought it on sale, but please don't do the same mistake. It is so disappointing, when you make a good trade or find good loot, then you bring it home aaaaand… it disappears! It’s gone. Not in the stock. Not in the waste dump. Just gone. As you can see in the commends, in many forums and many website: Team17 knows this bug since 2015. But they just don’t care to fix it. Why should they? As long as people like me are stupid enough to buy this crap-game, they don’t need…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Apparently, this game has been quietly abandoned after 1 update done from the road map and has had no updates/patches in almost a full year (I thought I had seen somewhere the devs had announced abandoning the game on their discord, but I cant find the evidence for that anywhere now). Incredibly disappointed as I really liked and enjoyed the 1st game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →abandoned after 2022
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Still a buggy mess in 2025...it's been 3 YEARS since the last update which was July 12th 2022 I'd consider this game as "Abandon-Ware" if it isn't updated in the next 2-3 years...I've tried EVERYTHING to bypass game breaking bugs and nothing has worked...Sooner or later you're just gonna get soft locked at a random point in game because something has just randomly decided to just stop working normally. For me it's upgrading facilities I click the upgrade I want and nothing happens, I have the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If i ever make enough monney one day i would buy this game of team 17 work with the community and make this game greater that what it could of been. Even if it makes me broke.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you’re thinking the negative reviews out there are being overly critical like I was, think again. Things you build, like a basic treadmill, require constant maintenance (think daily), even when unused. Further, not only must you maintain things, but if you don’t – they will catch on fire. Yes, the unused treadmill will catch on fire filling your shelter with smoke and creating heat exhaustion(status ailment) for your characters. Despite your best prepping, you are limited by an upgrade…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Man, I really wanted to give this game a good review. And three+ years ago, I really enjoyed it! The game was a great mash-up of a Fallout-style world with a heavy focus on base-building and Sims-like team management. It did a lot of things well and had a ton of potential, but just needed some love and polish and a bunch of bug fixes. And then... And then it all stopped. The devs suddenly went quiet and that was it: abandonware. I would guess that mediocre initial reviews and lack of a clear…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I should have listened to the other reviews.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game has crashed 2 hours into the game and there is no autosave option. There were no updates in last 2 years and it's a shame Team17 not only ignores that product but also sells it for so much.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →no updates, do not buy, waste of time
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love the sheltered series but the devs abandoned the game before they fixed the bugs, if you are lucky you can get thru a playthru with minimal bugs or you can get gamebreaking bugs and your game is lost. play the first 1 if you get the bunker simulator itch
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Abandoned! So sad.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Save your money and enjoy the first game instead.| They should have just expanded the first game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really enjoying the game, so much more detail then the original. I still enjoy playing Sheltered 1 from time to time, but I prefer all the added features in this, there are seasons, pets, the cats more useful, overall this is just a unique game. Edit: In October 2022, Unicube confirmed in the official Discord that their team has lost all funding for the game and have been forced to disband and find work elsewhere. So the game will see no future upgrades. Although, Unicube has stated they will…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →abandoned by devs ♥♥♥♥ Team 17
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just like everyone else has said, Sheltered 1 is amazing, absolute master piece, this one how ever for me has lost its original touch, they made it overly complicated, honestly i would of brought the game even if its the exact copy of sheltered 1 but with a new map, CoD is the same game over and over just different maps right, however dev team shut down, 2 owners are bringing whatever bug fix they MIGHT bring, ive never seen any updates for this myself so in my opinion, abandoned game. its an…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Another game with immense potential abandoned. We don't know the reason. All I can think about is the recognition and money lost by abandoning such potential.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I got it on-sale for 4.99. At that price, it's a 10/10 game. There's some base-building, some map exploration, and turn-based battles. I've killed some time playing it. I get bored easily but this kept my attention for more than a day, so that's a solid recommendation in itself. It's everything I wish mobile games would be (but on pc so w/e). I will say, if I had paid the full 20 bucks for it, I would've asked for a refund almost immediately. It has 5 dollar graphics and gameplay; end-of-story.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A disaster compared to the first one and almost instantly abandoned by the devs
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Garbage. REALLY A GAME MADE IN 2021 WITH NO AUTOSAVE ADJUSTMENTS. Meet someone in the wasteland for the first time. Have ZERO interest in them and just want to remove them and move on. No, you have to go thru a whole dialog and then HOPEFULLY find them again BECAUSE THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO ON THE FIRST MEETING. Suck up to them. Build a greenhouse or indoor planter. Some you will not get to use EVEN ONCE before you get the message that it is in use by another character. Search…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Full of bugs. Unplayable.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →3/10 - So disappointing i was really looking forward to this after playing the first installment. GameDevs abandoned the game and left it riddle with bugs. I tried hard to give it a chance but i have spent equal time looking up fixes for the bugs as i have have actually played the game. Hopefully you wont fall victim as i have.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Last game update 07 2022 as of this review on 01 2024. A fun game but a bit buggy... buy it at your own risk. I still play from time to time.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A shell of the first game, Idk everyone feels worse here, even the pixelated art style was better honestly.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My extremely honest opinion of this game: I feel like people rated it so badly because they expected it to be like the first game, which in some ways it is but mostly its not. This game is interesting and fun and has a lot of neat aspects, such as the moods and ailments, Sheltered is a great game and I think a lot of the charm is from the pixel-y game look which this one doesn't have. I still think this game is worth the money(I got it on sale for $4.99) I have enjoyed playing thus far and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Abandoned Should remove it from steam
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A game with so much potential, unfortunately abandoned. Haven't even been able to boot it into a playable state since last year.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →they some how made a worse game than number 1, then abandoned the game, dont waste your money.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun, but a buggy dead game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Full of bugs. The issue I'm having, Rats and plague, has been a issue since 2022 according to some discussions i found online trying to resolve it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really enjoyed the first Sheltered. So, I was expecting this one to be close to as good...however, this version makes no sense. Temperature has no logic to it. Your shelter will randomly increase in temperature. All items in the shelter (generator, oxygen filter, water filter, etc.) Lose integrity at random rates. The characters needs change with again no logic behind it as well. In summary, don't waste your time with this game. Would not recommend. To many broken mechanics to be worth your…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I actually do like this game. It surprised me. So many games have become complicated in their tier systems and do not allow enough free play. This one sort of touches on it but it still leaves room for you to build as you wish and isn't super pushy on the upgrade processes. I do wish there was more in regards to space for building and that materials were a bit more plentiful. I have played 3 times now and each time I lost because my leader died of the plague and I didn't have medications for…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is not a finished game. It's tremendously buggy. Certain functionalities are non-functional and the balance is awful. I'm at the point where no matter what I do, I cannot fail. The original game had that issue as well, but I feel to a lesser extent. I have a lot of complaints about the functionality and the basic behaviors of the survivors in your shelter. For example, running three floors down to get water for a fire that is on the same floor as them, with a free water source just a few…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →what a game, let me tell you. its one of those I want to be like Rimworld but i just copied their homework vibes type games. it looks fun, love the concept. in my experiences so far, its always something. you always have a problem. the game makes sure of it. everything else going good? not enough light in the base, ppl start setting everything on fire and kill everyone/destroy everything, game over. okay make sure to have more lights... manage their temperatures... they have beds, toilet,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game have a potential to be really good. The bugs are infuriating yes, but it is still playable for few game play until you loose your mind and write a review expressing your frustration about it. PS to devs please allow modding support. PLEASE
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →get on sale. keep expectations low. okay for sheltered 1 players looking to scratch the same itch.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As someone that put hours into the original, I don't quite get the mixed reviews to an extent. They have made this so much better, not just graphically but with the whole concept of travel and it's a beautiful game. It's frustrating that it takes so many run through's however before realising all of the different beautiful elements and choices that make up this game...it took me forever to realise how to recycle... it's also annoying when you grow to love a bunch of characters you're helping…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The AI and quality of life aspects of the game needs to be majorly polished. You can set the inhabitants to fulfil their needs once it hits below 75% (default) or 50%. But apart from that, they will stand still without any motivation to prepare food/rations, clean the shelter and even repair critical objects. Sometimes, the inhabitant just stands in one dark corner, making it hard to find them. There is no easy way of viewing all the stats of your inhabitants. You must manually change from one…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is very buggy. I loved the first game i was looking forward to this one and was disappointed. i'm glad i bought it on sale because it is not worth the full price in it's current state.I really hope more work is put into this game it has potential but it has been over a year with no more updates. It's to bad really.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't understand the negative reviews. I'm playing blind on the hardest difficulty, and after 4–5 restarts, I've finally reached a point where I can breathe without having to constantly chase food and water. Tooked 45 ingame days. Now I can focus on whatever I want (hopefully), so I'm ready for the long haul. The difficulty is definitely there, but I'm really enjoying it. I haven't run into any game-breaking bugs—just minor QoL hiccups that are immediately fixed by reloading the save, maybe…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →garbage, especially compared to the first game
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →sad its bad, the first one was a bliss
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →To many bugs to actually be able to play this game, works great the first hours but then the bugs are to much. Would not recommend to buy!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's been a very long time since I've played this game, but recently started craving it and hoped that there was a third game. Sadly, that doesn't seem to be the case, but I saw the "mixed" on reviews and didn't think that was at all deserved. Combat is more simple than an old-style JRPG, but base management and world map route planning was where it was really at. Handling the factions when that was introduced was a VERY nice touch. I very much hope that they put out a 3rd game in the future.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Too laggy and crashes too often. Worse than the first game.
