The moon shone red as blood in a pale circle and their scarlet tongues, formed like fishing harpoons, stretched out, curling to the edge of the flame.” ― Gustave Flaubert, Salammbô Salammbo, hailing from year 2003, is the last of the adventure games…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just finished it. Don't know why ppl blame it so much for being hard, it's almost like Atlantis series, the puzzles aren't that impossible (I'm patience to take an hour to solve something that takes 30 secs, hate walkthroughs) though I had to look for a hint to only one or two puzzles. The timed actions aren't hard either. People that complain about this game never played Myst, Lucas Arts series and other old adventure games. The story of this one is great, the only part I didn't like so much…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game looks like it might be a cool game, but I wouldn't know. I've waited years for them to release some sort of patch to support this product, I've been in contact with support (until they flat out stopped replying to emails), and I've even looked into third party solutions. But at the end of the day, the bottom line is that THIS GAME SHOULD NOT BE ON THE STEAM PLATFORM. This does not work on modern computer hardware without third party software to disable graphics features, significant…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The story is "heroic", with one improbable success and escape after another, in a dramatic comic book style. That's ok, it's a valid style of adventure and story. The story is slightly sophisticated, describing difficulties in negotiations to bring factions together for a common goal. It is a full length game and story. The inability to easily see which direction one can move is a critical downfall of the game, detracting so much from gameplay that I regret having played. Figuring out…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Based on the historic novel by Gustave Flaubert the team at Cryo Interactive (Rereleased by Anuman & Meridian4) made a first person point & click game with some combat in it to tell the story of how Carthage fell. Now before I start I want to get the negatives out of the way before I say anything good about it. The interface is god awful/annoying, the story is kinda linear but follows the original novel pretty well without being boring, the puzzles are easy except for a few hard ones (Perfect…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a very entertaining point-and-click adventure game. The game tells the story of Spendius, an actual historical figure, who rises from slavery to become a great commander of mercenary forces in the Mercenary War that further devastated Carthage after its defeat in the First Punic War. The art design is very creative but a little repetitive as is the sound design. Overall, the game has not aged too badly in the sound and graphics departments. The puzzles range from trivial to challenging…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dear Steam... Salammbo: Battle for Carthage looks like a great game. With dark and alien architecture, a strange world that is barely introduced before you are dropped down into it, and a compelling frame of a story. However, Steam is selling a product that is outright broken on modern systems. Menus where your cursor is invisible, meaning saving, loading and then exiting the menu you opened is a test of patience, a horribly flickering quest log, and crashes to desktop from launch. Salammbo:…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Salammbô is the last game from Cryo, the legendary game studio that made great games like Atlantis, and always had a great eye for detail and valued art and considered games like a new way of expression (back when games were not still considered as such). Cryo was founded also by members of Infogrames, the creators of Alone in the dark (the original) This last effort of theirs, was troubled in its conception, partly because the studio closed its doors while doing this game (2002). Wich of…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Old game but amazing art style. This game is not too hard like other old games so it suits for new gamers. The story is pretty linear but not boring because there are some minigames that fun a lot. I really like war chess minigame, creative and genius, though I wish it will have a few more rounds to play.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the most unique adventure games I have played. Basic, but the atmosphere is incredible. Very detailed - fun to look around in the game, even if it is older.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The story isn't bad, but I absolutely hate the interface mechanics. I really need to stop getting games based on the amazing screenshots pictured, they look nothing like what you see in game. For a 2003 point and click game it's not bad, but it can become frustrating really quickly. I don't see myself ever finishing this game completely, but thats just me.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Holy-moly, the art in this game is so good. The gameplay for an adventure game from 2003 is surprisingly solid. The puzzles are mostly logical and straightforward. The storyline is enjoyable. Spendius definitely grows on you as a character. The Myst-like navigation can sometimes be disorienting, but you get used to it very quickly after memorizing the lay of the land. If any game is worth being called a "hidden gem" then it's this one. Playthrough was completed on Manjaro Linux using the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One Sentence Summary- A high-end point and click adventure with great graphics for the time it came out. ***(If you encounter a bug where the game freezes on the world map, please see my last Con (-) bullet point for a fix)*** --MY THOUGHTS-- I got this game very cheaply as part of a bundle. I did not know what to expect. This game seems to follow a pseudo-historical timeline, meaning it takes place in a fantasy/historical setting. The graphics are great. This game comes from a time when…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i bought and had to refund this game because it doesn't work properly in modern systems.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A nice little point-and-click adventure game, if a bit short and linear. With a Gothic aesthetic, it was easy for me to get drawn in. A world that was both surreal and yet simple, never edging over to high-fantasy. Mechanics are as you'd expect from some of the later Myst and Journeyman Project games, with it being singular images with 360 view. The puzzles are never obfuscated or nonsensical, and a good handful require some strong thought to solve. Downside to the game is it's rather…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted to like this. I will admit the main reason I did purchase this was the well-endowed woman on the cover. What bothers me about this game, besides the awkward Myst-like navigation is the art style. The animation looks like poor early 1990's standard adventure fare and the characters and animation look like a strange cross between historical accuracy and a mutated version of Heavy Metal. It has a strange dark fantasy look and the character designs are ugly, in my opinion. Do not recommend.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i picked up this game on sale because it was cheap and i liked the look of the game. that was a mistake on my part because the while it looks kind of nice, the game is a navigating nightmare. you cannot move freely in this game , you need to use the mouse and click on specific places on the screen if you want to head there , but the problem is it sends you to preset locations and not the place you wanted to walk. it is like you are bunny hopping around the level, this makes figuring out where…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Some games age better than others. This has clearly not aged well, but I'm not sure it was any good when it was released, either. You can't have the subtitle "Battle for Carthage" and then just put out some point and click nonsense.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →awesome graphics, fun plot. very comfy
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very old school game. Has some good elements, but ultimately it's a chore. Not a problem in itself if you have patience, but sorry, too many bugs. Ultimately I got to a point where I couldn't advance further due to bugs. Avoid.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hum... Good and bad. This is a P&C game. The graphics are old but very nice. The music is OK. The story is somewhat interesting. No bugs or crashes. Overall, an interesting experience. The graphics and the atmosphere are great. The story is good and keeps you interested. That's the good part. On the other hand, very dated mechanics, moon logic puzzles, and is hard to navigate. This company, Cryo, was good at experimenting and creating atmospheres and weird worlds to lose in them, but they…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a hidden gem. I have a soft spot for point-and-click adventure games, and this one is for sure one of the more memorable I've played. The art style is incredibly gripping and unique, the puzzles are generally fair and the story actually had me wanting to see what happens next, which does not happen for me in these types of game since I play them mostly for the aesthetics. I highly recommend this game, I got about 14 hours out of it and I plan to replay it around Halloween each…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is an eyebrows-rising experience. It's curious and unusual, with production quality you don't expect from something so unhyped. In spite of its suggestive title, it's not an action game, but a Myst-like "point and click" adventure with a 360 degree look-around feature. Although the story is referring to historic events, the visuals suggest they take place on a different planet, filled with weird creatures and magic. Animated scenery livens up the atmospheric environment. The voice…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Have no idea how the comic book goes but this game did encourage me to go find it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nice little adventure game, that takes you to an alien, yet so familiar world. And don't worry, it is very easy to get this game to run properly, just follow the instructions on Steam guides.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you love the surreal, you may love Salammbo. Right from the menu it feels alien then continues to do so with such a bizarre mix in almost every corner of the design with its design of the characters, the architecture and the VERY dramatic orchestral music. There's no preface to the world either, which I loved. So I had a sense of wonder about the world throughout the entire game, and even remain curious to figure what it's all about after completion. Salammbo: Battle for Carthage is based…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great, challenging, classic Microids adventure game with a really terrible name. Based on a graphic novel, and providing comic panel cutscenes (referred to erroneously as "3D frescoes" in the store description,) this is NOT an historical game. This is more like an interactive version of early 1980's Heavy Metal magazine. Brawny men, busty babes, big weird creatures: all wrapped in a convoluted power struggle story that is loosely based on real events and persons, set in a nicely rendered…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Stunning graphics for that age. Quite interesting story for a point&click. Warning: may have some problems running on newer Windows systems.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a game based on great books done by Gustave Flaubert and despite a bit poorly aged background images and very low resolution screen - Salammbo have amazing dialogue, fascinating story, great world and character design, beautiful music and top notch competent puzzles that aged very well for today's standards. For less than 5$ during sale, this 6 hour long old school point and click adventure game will easy suck you in for unique adventure of your life time. Note: old game is old…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →NO - Load of Rubbish, waste of money, doesn't work and the fix is far from helpful. Don't buy it
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent game. Graphics are understandably dated but the gameplay feels natural. A great adventure game with interesting puzzles and a classic story. Reccomend.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Interesting & strange game. Sometimes it has scary music & moments.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really enjoyed it despite its faults. + I adore the art style, really sick character designs and environments. + I enjoyed the story, I like how the protagonist is just trying to save his skin and doesn't have anything heroic about him + I liked most of the puzzles, especially the ones where you have to arrange troops before a battle + good voice acting + doesn't take long time to complete - I felt like some puzzles didn't have enough clues, I had to resort to a walktrhrough - The game is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really unique look, story, and gameplay! Some good puzzles!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought this game not expecting anything. But truth be told, this anusual game with its old school gameplay and great story was great way to pass some time.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game feels like the twisted, dark fantasy reimagination of a historical era. Had to use the discussion forum to get it running at all. It has dated UI and navigation, and okay-ish graphics and audio quality. Despite being a point & click adventure, you can actually die, though the game immediately reloads to the last place you've been before death. I'm not recommending it because of the dark visuals and weird and art style (pretty much every human and animal look like various demons and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Old but beautiful game. It's nice, entertaining and the story draws you in. Having more fun with this than with some comes that come out 10 years later.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Salammbo: Battle for Carthage is a 2002 game based on a historical Mercenary War and a book telling this story. Our main character Spendius for example is an actual historical figure with a very different outcome. Game is VERY old and VERY dated in terms of graphics. Have some technical problems. This is a point and click adventure game which you look around 360 and interect with objects and try to solve puzzles and progress the story. ++Setting: It has a strange and different art design…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Salammbo is a classic point n' click adventure from the golden era for the genre, only this particular game has been jazzed up with elements of strategy and diplomacy. You'll have to talk your way out of situations and maybe even lead an army, which is not often met in classic point n' clicks. The story is quite unique, it mixes history with some sort of mythology, and that whole uniqueness made me genuinely long for the good old adventure game days. As for the technical aspects, the game ran…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →very cool point and clicker but doesnt work properly
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game, reminds me of Dark Earth! Love the art style! Sadly, there are errors with cursor on Windows 10, please fix it!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Mediocre quest with mediocre puzzles, writing and voice acting which are compensated by brilliant art-style and unique atmosphere of classic French Space Opera comics. Its plot is based on Philippe Druillet's "Salammbo" trilogy (which is loosely based on Gustave Flaubert's novel of the same name), and Druillet's artistic influence on developers from Cryo Interactive is easily noticeable. Alas, as a game Salammbo suffers from dozens of little flaws that makes its gameplay painfully frustrating…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you like Philippe Druillet it is game for you. The Salammbô: Battle for Carthage is video-game adaptation of the Druillet's series of comics about Salammbô (Salammbô, Carthage and Matho). Flaubert is only in background. The game is typical old adventure game: we are walking between places like frog. All places are pre-rendering. The puzzles are varied. Once hard, other not. If you like old-fashioned adventure games and you like ancientpunk - you must play.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Quite unusual game - kind of salad from puzzles and facinating story.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Salammbô: Battle for Carthage, developed by Cryo Interactive and published by Microids, stands as a distinctive entry in the early 2000s adventure genre, drawing heavily from historical inspiration while embracing a bold, almost surreal artistic direction. Loosely based on the world of Gustave Flaubert’s work and visually influenced by the striking style of Philippe Druillet, the game transports players to a version of ancient Carthage that feels less like a strict historical recreation and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Holy shit, there's a Salammbô vidéo game?
unlabelledView post →Solid. Stunning visuals, nice dialogue and puzzles that mostly make sense and are satisfying to solve, if on the simpler side. The game does lose steam not too long after the halfway point, but I still found this to be a pleasant point and click experience. I see reviews saying the game doesn't work, but it functioned fine out of the box for me. Mileage may vary.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Spendius oh Spendius , this game is based on the best selling novel in 1882 which carry the same name Salammbô , I highly recommend playing the game if you are interested in the VN and point and click game play with good novel like story telling
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this is the only game that lets you eat shoes
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A well made game still fun to play. brain teasing puzzles great dialogues and dark immersive game environment. Push updates to fix compatibility issues and keep this piece of art alive
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Maybe with at least a working map this could have been interesting. In this poor state, already orientation becomes tedious and frustrating.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun short puzzle game. The puzzles were for the most part realistic and I enjoyed the mix of combat. Where it shines is art direction, it's a beautiful world.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Super cool game! I was reminiscing about Dreamcatcher games and found this today. It works perfectly 'out of the box' on the Steam Deck if you don't mess with the settings, and plays beautifully on PC as well.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Basedge: Based not Cringe
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I hope you like black, dark brown and dark gray, because those are the only colors you will see in this game. The developers went for certain aesthetic, but they overdone it in my opinion. The result is an unintentionaly ugly game. The game stops reacting on a map screen 2 hours in so I cannot finish it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An excellent point and click game. Puzzles are logical and satisfying. Graphics are great for the time. The only downside for me is that it is quite easy to get disorientated and lost, because of the method of movement (e.g. in the mercenary camp). Had a great time finishing it though (took me 14 hours).
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Although this game barely runs on Win 10, I was compelled to finish the game on the strengths of its story, the impressive visuals (being based on a graphic novel) and the variety of puzzles. This game definitely stands out amongst other point & click puzzle games.
