What people are saying
Mostly positive but split on controls and bugs.
Many players enjoy the humor and old-school GTA homage, calling it a fun medieval romp. One says it's 'a silly but fun experience' and another calls it 'an awesome game'. [16][17]
However, a significant number criticize clunky controls, bugs, and a required launcher. One player says 'the controls are frustratimg' and another calls it 'an unfinished buggy mess'. [29][33]

60 of 189 · most liked firstI would not have given ant review of this game if I didn't want to like it so much. The humor is goofy, but fun, the concept is hilarous, and the graphics are exactly what they need to be. But the controls... are.... so... awful. Gamepad? They are awful. Mouse and keyboard? A bit more precise, but somehow even more awful. Steamdeck? Hell, once I hit the holy grail mission, every 20 steps the ~ console would drop down blocking half my screen. Looking at my friends who own this game, one has…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Haven’t had this much fun in a while! There are two ways to play this game: The boring way - criticizing every small detail and expecting AAA quality. The fun way - just playing and enjoying the comedy. The setup is very simple, and the title says it all. It’s a GTA-style game in a medieval setting. You can follow the story and explore a ton of jokes and references, ranging from Monty Python to Papers, Please, King Arthur, Excalibur, and probably many more that I have not even noticed yet. Or…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I adore the game, its great. I have one HUGE problem though, when you go to close the game you get an In Game POPUP ADVERTISEMENT. Listen.. I purchased your game, not your advertisements. I already have most of your games, I do not need to be reminded that "Hey you could own these others titles from us, just click here!!". This is a boundary crossed that honestly, shows that you as a dev/publisher or both you are clearly Willing to cross lines to make money. This is the last dollar you'll see…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Can be fun but has a required launcher now and in game advertising on top of it :/. I already bought your game, this isn't whats going to get a better review for it. I love the concept of this and have fun playing it but whats next, a required account with the company? No gamer in the history of games has wanted a launcher to manage a subset of games, Steam is already a launcher. We bought it here because we already have a launcher open. Please do not do this. It has some bugs to work out…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think this would have been a great game if the gameplay was fine but the controls are frustratimg not very responsive what makes combatting an enemy very difficult!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Rustler has a fun premise: a medieval GTA parody full of absurd humor, silly quests, and a great bard-as-a-radio gimmick. The world has personality, and the game can be genuinely funny at times. But the execution just isn’t there. Controls are clunky, combat feels unresponsive, missions get repetitive fast, and bugs or AI issues constantly break the experience. The charm is there, but the polish is not. Rustler has heart and a great idea behind it, but in this state it’s hard to recommend.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →✅ GTA style open-world medieval top-down action game ✅ Ridiculous quests ✅ Hilarious and humorous dialogues ✅ Decent graphics ❌ Unnecessarily opens up a launcher on every startup ❌ Combat is awful ❌ Quests can involve going to much back and forth ❌ Can't skip dialogues when retrying and it becomes annoying
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Morlan's shorts: Well.. now it has a launcher and you cannot..launch it, without the.. launcher! So NO! As if Mixed/Mostly Positive wasn't bad enough, you thought adding a launcher would help? Just remove the launcher or make it work without it so we can play in peace. No, it's not a review, I don't care, like they don't care about frustrating the customers. Uninstalled for now. Don't waste more time reading lengthy reviews.. time is of the essence!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →was really looking forward to this one but unfortunately it's not that exciting once you're in game it's open world but it's not a sandbox. you are on a linear mission based campaign and failure means reloading a checkpoint. you can't manually save or quick save so it's just the auto save checkpoints. the open world simply just means no loading screens between missions, otherwise you're going from point A to B and doing X task and you have no choice or say in that. people comparing it to GTA…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Medieval GTA, but like the first with its top-down view. Silly quests, side activities of varying fun, and a decent story. Steam overlay doesn't seem to play nice for me, so maybe disable that for this one. Seems to start some kind of memory leak or something that will eventually crash the game. If your sound gets janky suddenly, you have just a couple minutes to save.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So I decided to change my review. This game is an unfinished buggy mess. It's really not fun to play at all.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Rustler clearly aim to be an hommage of the old top down GTA, and from the first look of it, the idea is honestly good. A medieval spin is original, stealing horses instead of cars, humoristic vibe and the liberty to do anything you want (even beating up anyone you encounter). I was really curious when launching this one and I expected some humoristic chaos. But oh boy, every minute in game had my expectation shrinking by the minute. I'm honestly flabbergast by how little the dev seems to have…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A Silly little time waster game, however About 2/3rds through the game I encountered a game breaking bug, even reloading and trying to pass it again failed so I'm unable to complete the game, had encountered other bugs earlier but this made it impossible to progress. Too buggy to recommend.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really tried with this one. I kept playing it and then leaving it... then coming back to it. Each revisit began to feel more oppressive than the last, The gameplay as a whole is just so lame. Combat is weak, moving around the game world is an absolute slog. and there's no real character progression. Story and setting are just plain dumb. The "GTA Horse" concept seemed to have potential but it turns out medieval gangsters aren't amusing after all. In fact, they're quite annoying.…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →GTA on a horse. Its def not Rockstar size / quality gfx however the quests, dialog, and mechanics are on par.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Interesting idea for a game but in the end it turns into a mediocre mess, not helped by the abysmal save system which can ocasionally lose you many minutes of progress
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There is nothing really new here, but I had a lot of fun finishing this game. the old school gameplay, the humor, and the art style are all positives. if you liked the old gta1+2 games you will like this. "Grand theft Horse" is a perfect description. 8/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game's hilarious. Don't trust the bad reviews. Great homage to the og GTA games and fun humor. Game doesn't take itself too seriously; it does however overstay its welcome a bit, could've been a bit shorter, fewer missions. But that's on me, though. I could've just quit playing it earlier.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a parody that forgot to include the part where it is actually fun to play. The joke lands once, you go 'okay, medieval gta, got it'. It leans hard on the humour but most of it feels like the same gag, missions are repetitive and the novelty wears out faster than the time it takes to steal a horse.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In the first 30 minutes of the game I punched out several peasants, stole a cart, hired a bard to blast medieval techno while I ran from the guards and over more peasants. 10/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →lost my interest. mediocre at best. refunded it, glad i did, it came out free on epic a few weeks ago. either though i'll probably never play it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →why did they plaster a ♥♥♥♥ launcher on this
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I picked up this game in a bundle on sale, thinking it was a one-off joke that would get old fast. Grand Theft Horse. Hahaha. This is a GOOD GAME. It does still have the same gameplay as GTA2, complete with occasionally frustrating driving controls and wonky combat, but it is every bit as fun as those games were. It looks great, it has a, frankly, alarmingly good soundtrack. As in I have since downloaded the soundtrack to listen to at home. And I do love the gag of the soundtrack for the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I honestly can't fathom as to why anyone would pay more than $3 for this. The graphics are sub-par but thats to be expected. Whats not expected is the pure frustrating hell that this game brings with the controls, or the lack thereof! Refunded this hot mess after only a few minutes cause the controls are pure garbage!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The story and humor is pretty fun and funny, but the gameplay is like the design question was "how can we ragebait and make our players as missreable as possible", half the time the succes of a mission is more based on getting lucky a guard glitches out then anything you actually do.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pierogi Beatbox has got to be peak music in 1200s sometime. Tip: Do not compare this game with GTA III and up. Helps you rant less about the quality. General: - The control is janky at times, but it's not as bad as recent Steam reviews suggest. Though it might be true on controllers. Keyboard and mouse works fine if you remember where the crosshair is. - The graphics are somewhat mobile-esque, despite not being one (at least from the Wikipedia article). But still, you shouldn't judge this game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Glitchy, mediocre, clunky and frustrating. Not worth your time. I tried to play on, but the more I did the worse it got. Terrible shame its a mess.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The title says it all: Grand Theft Horse. It's irreverent, sophomoric, chaotic, and just plain fun. Recommended. It would be HIGHLY recommended if it had multiplayer. Hey, devs! You guys said you couldn't implement multiplayer due to a lack of funding early on, right? Well... if a couple of you used a bit of spare time to strap multiplayer support to this game, the resulting spike in sales would be well worth it. Lots of folks who noped out on this one because it's single player only would…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →game got abandoned
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game sucks and Steam wont accept my refund.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →“BLARGH MEH GRAH HIBBIDA HOBBA!!" Played on Steam Deck — runs great overall and the nonsense quests and dialogue are genuinely funny most of the time. I did run into a few glitchy moments with bad stuttering/freezing that needed a restart, and the combat could use some polish, but overall it’s a hilarious and fun medieval GTA.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While being repetitive and not particularly deep, from a gameplay point of view, Rustler is fun enough. The top-down view will cause you to crash into obstacles way too often, your character will get stuck into enemies and structures while moving around (expecially if you are using mouse+keyboard). Dialogues are fun, cultural references enjoyable and the game is, at least, self aware of its "status". 6/10 buy on sale.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The concept is amusing for the first 5 to 10 minutes. Then you realise the whole point of the game is to to go from A to B, do some task, rinse and repeat. The combats are not good, you never know when your weapon will reach or even harm your oponent, but you can be sure your oponent will never miss you. You can be spammed with attacks while wondering if your character forgot how to use his arms when you try to land a blow.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What were they thinking w/ the movement controls in this game? Awful, truly awful. Very quick refund
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Medieval GTA, thats exactly what it is, sounds awesome on paper, and its damn.... boring. For two hours now it feels like ive played this game already, it doesnt feel fresh, maybe it picks up after the "fight club" main quest and ive done all the side missions leading up to it, but i just cant be bothered. My enjoyment score for this one is a shallow 36% You know that feeling when something feels a bit unfinished, but you cant quite tell what it is? That's this game, probably why the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I mean sure funny haha medieval GTA with a fart and burt button, but somewhere along the line someone forgot to actually code a videogame
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Clearly the old GTA's copied this game...It was made in Ye Olden Times.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Totally worth picking up on sale I played this game on a keyboard and mouse, and the only problem I had was my finger getting tired from constantly holding down sprint/gallop. Overall, it's a silly but fun experience. The game doesn't take itself seriously at all. There's beatboxing bards, a configurable blood level, and a dedicated burp/fart button. At times the game is frustrating when driving around carts, and there are several instances where you'll get stuck on something. The worst…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Old wonky GTA2 style controls and all! The QoL additions were nice.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →(game not completed at .2 hours of gameplay at review time, part of my review all my games effort) (short version) Just no, not for me, and holy cow are the controls effing weird. Tries WAY too hard to be funny and "rofl so random XD!". Play GTA 5 it's free. However, if you're a 8-12 year old you'll probally love this. (No long review needed)
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →GTA but Dark Souls. Bit janky, but defo worth getting if you like Old School GTAs, although the controls feel a bit tanky.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An awesome game loved it from start to finish. I enjoyed the comedy in the game the lines were hilarious. This is a great early gta clone imo. Would highly recommend it. Would love a part 2 in third person mode. Definitely worth getting.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's unique but gets boring fassssttttt, especially for an open world "GTA-like" game. Got every ounce of anything there is to do in like a couple hours.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →-First of all, I liked the game. It's very reminiscent to the good old original GTA and GTA 2 but in a medieval fashion. -The story was kinda simple but it still well made and hilarious. -Characters are like most GTA style games, they are a exaggerated caricature of real life which is funny. -The world building is almost exactly the same as most GTA game, you are just a nobody making a name for himself. -The graphics are good, the game ran well at max setting 2k/144fps with my…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Waste of time, dont buy.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'd give it a maybe I can't recommend this game because it is a top down camera view. Top down view is the bane of camera angles and my least favorite to play. Especially when you have absolutely no free control over the camera. So for this reason alone I can't get into the game and give a thorough review. Note: I did notice while riding a horse the screen has tearing, this may be remediable but it's unclear. 5/10…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Finally, the GTA clone I never knew I needed lol except everyone’s drunk, everything’s medieval, and my carjacking skills now apply to livestock. The graphics are beautifully janky in that ‘yes this is on purpose’ way, and nothing is more satisfying than committing a drive-by… on a horse… with a lute player hyping me up like a medieval hype man. 10/10, would get chased by the Inquisition again.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Funniest sh*t i have seen in years. The only missing thing is the hookers and the quest about teaching your mum how to read!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Grand Theft Horse does exactly what the name promises - it's grand, there's theft, and there are horses. Having the bard radio stations really elevated this game for me (especially the sick beatboxing), and having lots of fun NPCs made the storyline engaging too. The horse carts are a real pain to manoeuvre, which was compounded when the knights were after me! All in all, a great game that I will continue to play! This will be a replacement until GTA 6 is finally released...
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's been a while since I first picked up Rustler and now that I played it again after a long time I wanted to share my experience. I'm sure that one is probably on me, but I couldn't play the game for long when I opened it. Always had to take breaks after a short time, coming back later. The dialogs are fun and so are the many weird quests you as a normal Guy are going to complete. Stealing horses, wrestling with random duded on the street and much more is waiting for you!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Downloaded on a 80% off. paid about £3.50. Well developed game, but since it's just mindless thuggery and violence and not a very charismatic lead character i decided to sack it off and get a refund. Update: This developer clearly is very sensitive about what people say on their game. Instead of having such a thin skin, I suggest they suck up to the fact they made an unoriginal, clunky and shallow PoS. Also try a bit harder next time - and realise the gaming market is not just you and your…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A goofy game that has a lot of GTA 2 charm, but it's more modern, so I guess it's more like a medieval version of GTA Chinatown Wars with a bit of Postal influence. It's fun, it's funny, it's charming, it's a little bit janky at times The main story is pretty short, but if you want to 100% the game you have to do all the side activities, it can take a while, but it's mostly because there are side activities that are like GTA taxi/medic missions etc. which can be a little bit annoying given…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't usually write reviews but Rustler genuinely surprised me and I've enjoyed every minute. It's basically what you'd get if classic GTA met medieval times, and somehow it just works. The humour is ridiculous in the best way, the quests are entertaining, and there's always something that distracts you from what you were originally planning to do. The game doesn't take itself too seriously, and I think that's part of its charm. Riding around causing absolute chaos never really gets old. It's…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This medieval take on classic GTA is full of injokes and sarcastic references in a dumb but good self-aware kind of way. If you're finicky about having controls really polished you might have a hard time -- but honestly I found that there are a ton more pros than cons to getting this game for the laughs you'll have.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Rustler is a GTA parody set in medieval times. The writing and jokes are terrible. They tried way too hard to be funny when this game just isn't. The character writing was written like it was either badly translated or entirely compiled by one 17-year-old boy. The gameplay itself isn't too terrible. I had fun during the time I was just messing around and not doing the mission. Plus, the mission wasn't god awful. All in all, I'm sure people are more appealed by the comedy aspect of this…
