Thought I'd do it again this year! What games did you complete (or just play a lot of)? What did you think about them? Highlights? Lowlights? Might be a good chance to find some hidden gems while the Steam sale is on too. I finished a surprisingly large number of games this year. Sorted by date completed, oldest first... **A Short Hike |…

unlabelledView post →I still do not think i can recomend this game. Visually its perfect, good graphics, cool vibes, unmatched atmosphere of dystopian cyberpunk, good immersive soundtrack. The artstyle is incredibly on point, this game has a style. But gameplay wise its bad, sometimes horrible. Controls are clunky, dash mechanic is stubborn, a lot of visual noise, sometimes unfair enemy placements. Not to say you dont know how much damage you doing, how much your weapons supposed to do, coldowns on abilities are…

unlabelledView post →Oh yeah, if any of you have been enjoying Sprawl Zero or the original Sprawl, Metal Eden (by the Ruiner devs) is basically the game that exists at the intersection of those two. Wall-running AND bit smashy powers. It is also *very* pretty and only £4 right now.
unlabelledView post →Occasionally I am reminded of RUINER, a game with disgustingly great art direction. It was not horror but had freaky bosses like the Sick Sisters cdna.artstation.com/p/assets/cov...
unlabelledView post →Ruiner was certainly not an 'original' looking game by any means but it definitely wore its heart on its sleeve and I like that a lot more than other things in synthwave cyberpunk trying to act like they're the first to do it. Metal Eden so far is kinda neither.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For a game that is trying to be fast paced and intense, they made some really odd choices. The game is CONSTANTLY going into slow mo which is really distracting and totally prevents you from getting any kind of rhythm going in the combat. Not that you really could get much of a ryhthm since every combat seems to be: Enter an area, wait for enemies to slowly trickle in, kill those, wait for more, kill those, wait, then walk down a corridor and repeat. And if the nonstop slow mo wasn't enough,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A whole load of nothing, I thought this game was slightly subpar, Weapons have very little impact, and even though there are a handful of types, they all feel the same to use. It's hard to tell when you take damage or what you are getting hit by, unless you look at your health, due to how "floaty" the game feels. Gun sounds are ok, and there are only a few lines of voice acting. The OST is a BANGER, I enjoyed it so much I turned down most of the in-game sound and just had that all the…

unlabelledView post →A fun & challenging cyberpunk themed twin-stick shooter with a mild chance of cyberpsychosis in form of epilepsy or seizure. Storytelling is one area where Ruiner falls short, but its striking art style, music & surprisingly varied gameplay still make it an easy recommendation.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →RUINER 2 - Official Gameplay Trailer. I'm a big fan of the original [Ruiner](https://store.steampowered.com/app/464060/RUINER/) so I'm very excited for this sequel. And yet, is it possible they've added *too much* to this new game? Now you can swap characters, swap gear within those characters, level up with a giant skill tree, explore an open world of dungeons, *and* co-op was added? I enjoyed the simplicity of the first Ruiner and this seems like they might be taking too big of a swing.…

unlabelledView post →Reikon Games laid off 80% of its staff today. A damn shame, as Ruiner is a solid time - and yet another fist to the face of an already bruised and bloodied industry. I hate this week... month... the past thirteen months... Fuckin' hell.
unlabelledView post →Had this on wish list for a while, and even at $2 on sale this one is getting a negative from me - game tries way too hard to be edgy and just comes off as complete cringe in every aspect of its design. The whole prologue of the game they keep spamming KILLBOSS on your screen every single minute, and as other reviews state there is too much flashing on the screen on top of a (story?) that just isn't engaging. Combat feels too inconsequential and all weapons are just too same-y to even matter in…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Impressive fast-paced, Top-Down Shooter with high adrenaline gameplay, for people who love fast reflex action gameplay. Skills that make you extremely overpowered end game if you use them right, for every kind of situation. Story takes place in a futuristic cyberpunk world, with decent graphical enviroment, ugly tech atmosphere and soundtracks that rocks. I absolutely enjoyed every fight of this game and i totally recommend it to any Top-Down-Shooter Enthusiast, it's not a classic and…

unlabelledView post →Played it 9 yrs ago, didn't like it- decided to try this once again but I still don't like it. Truly a shame, cause the game just oozes style and the music is absolutely great....but man the game is just not well designed. The controls, movement is smooth but so unintuitive-you can only move in 90 or 45 degree angles and it feels terrible to control, atleast on KBM. The levels are extremely linear but even then there are so many unnecessary random blockades that prohibit you from going back to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →RUINER gets a very good 7,5 of 10 from me. And I claim that - for only 2 Euro/Dollar right now - Ruiner even is a "must buy" right now: Ruiner has nice looking graphics while being not too demanding, it is a 2017 game. The art design and style are really well done, it really nails the cyberpunk aesthetic. The soundtrack is fire. It has fast and satisfying gameplay plus replayability. Ruiner is challenging while respecting your gaming time.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is such a weird case of "what are these reviews even talking about?". After some initial learning curves on mechanics this game is insanely straight forward - even on hard - and there's not really a whole lot of BS outside of occasionally janky projectile hitboxes. Story's plain and keeps you wanting to move, stat page lets you freely customize builds (even mid fight) so you can try something else immediately. Death is instant lets you restart fast, checkpoints are pretty fair. The highs…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Awesome 5 hour playthrough. This is a pretty unique game with its really cool cyberpunk aesthetic. At times it gives Blade Runner & Ghost in the Shell vibes. Plenty of good boss fights. I recommend playing with a controller and completing the playthrough in a single session.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Had to return because the game has an ungodly amount of flashing lights and gives no option to turn them off. Awful.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →🎮 Gameplay 🔲 Excellent 🔲 Good ✅ Average 🔲 Poor 🔲 Staring at Walls is better Ruiner offers a frenetic, fast-paced combat experience that blends top-down shooting with cyberpunk aesthetics, but the gameplay itself can feel repetitive and clunky. The combat is often chaotic and unforgiving, with limited depth in terms of mechanics. Despite this, once you get the rhythm of it, there’s a certain visceral satisfaction in clearing rooms full of enemies in near infinite bullet time. However, the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ruiner is a cool game because it's sort of like Hotline Miami style but more of a hack-and-slash and it's also an extremely elaborate fetish scene where your nonverbal pretransition self is called a dog by a sketchy computer-touching woman.

I'm just excited for more Ruiner! https://store.steampowered.com/app/2936810/RUINER_2/ Also, if you haven't played the first Ruiner, it's currently [90% off on steam](https://store.steampowered.com/app/464060/RUINER/). However - I simply can't get past controls. I tried both keyboard and xbox controller with both being simply horrible. Most comes down to character facing which has a certain floatiness while keeping everything oriented to a slight deviation from 90 degrees. This would be fine if game didn't also require precision with…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm surprised there arent more isometric shooters or twin stick shooters in general. They're awesome. The Ascent ruled, Ruiner, some other ones... Seems like an easy way to make a game without having to have crazy animations or super detailed art (The Ascent and Ruiner are bad examples i realize)
unlabelledView post →If I could do a middle thumb, I would. Fun combat and good story, held back by bad level design and some garbage mechanics and unclear explanations. Music? Fantastic. Story? Awesome! Combat? Fantastic! But I have literally rage quit this game twice because of bad level and arena design. Take, for example, the Arena game mode. You reach a stage where these red laser walls (for lack of a better term that even comes close to describing them) emerge from the floor. This also happens in the…

unlabelledView post →Dystopian top-down shooter with plenty of action. I was surprised to see RUINER being compared to Hotline Miami since it plays a lot differently, but I guess after finishing it, looking back at it and ignoring the core gameplay, it kind of gives off the same vibe. It's an action-packed experience limited to battle rooms where you can attack with melee weapons or ranged ones, both of which you can pick up and switch as you wish. There are plenty of drops through enemies, random pickups and…

unlabelledView post →This is one of those games that will age slowly for two reasons: art direction and music. Gameplay will have its followers, as well as those who’ll say they’ve seen it all before. However, what’s undeniable is that the game has a strong magnetism from the very first few minutes, thanks to the atmosphere it creates. Other than that there is a story but simply just go out there and massacre your enemies as you please. Woof!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →“The Queen of Hearts” by the ridiculously talented Benedykt Szneider! It's probably a great game for speed running. +really like the atmosphere. +skill points can be refunded and reallocated at any time with no cost. -You can have several skills equipped but they all cost energy, so I ended up only ever using the shield because it allowed me to stay alive and any other use of energy felt like a mistake. +getting…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cool game. The artificial difficulty gets old extremely fast. Lost of visual cancer, audio glitches, and horrendous hitboxes. Pretty cool game for its time. Decent visuals and pretty good music. The devs thought it would be funny to make it completely impossible to 100 percent due to extreme difficulty going back to the days of the arcade games in the 80s. Too bad..
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a very special game, fast paced combat, great art direction, memorable character (HER) and god-tier music. Native Linux version is missing cut scenes and some art during conversations and gameplay ( like the LEDs from main character face or tv screens in the environment. But you can always switch to Windows version through Proton to experience the whole thing. I am very eager to play RUINER 2
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very short but nice. - The visuals hold up very good, music is hype. - Story is basic and barely existing. - Gameplay is basic for a top down shooter, some boss and move are annoying. Get it at a low price.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Badass game. Combat and character ability progression is super satisfying first of all. Plenty of abilities to upgrade and easily swap in and out to fit different playstyles. Very rewarding kill animations as well. On top of that, the music, characters, and overall world is extremely cool. If you're into dystopian cyberpunk themes, this one will put a smile on your face. Story is pretty predictable but the characters are what make it really fun. Highly recommend it.

I recommend #5, feat. comics by Sztybor (Hugo Award winner) and @jaszczu.bsky.social (proud owner of the White Chicken), with Son by Benek Szneider (art director of the game Ruiner) and Strange Years: Autumn #1 by me and Artur.
unlabelledView post →The mouse and keyboard controls are frustratingly bad. Movement is relative to the world instead of your actual perspective, so all movement is tilted at around 30 degrees. This is fine for just navigating the environment, but in combat it is unbearable. Almost every time I tried to close the distance to an enemy or dodge an attack, I would miss or get hit because of it. Also, for some reason, on a controller you can use your melee and ranged weapon interchangably, but on MnK, you have to…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →(HAVEN'T FINISHED THE GAME, still continuing) In short, fun and clunky In long terms, Something really just hits about this game's atmosphere and design, they're so miserable yet so pretty. The combat is enjoyable enough to keep me going, and the storytelling is alright. The only part of this game that pisses me off, is just how stupidly chaotic the game is, it's something I'm impressed and distastful of, one fight and the screen could clutter with effects so much, that it's…
