Rogue Stormers
Developer Black Forest Games
Rogue Stormers (originally DieselStörmers) is a fantasy action game, initially developed by Spellbound Entertainment. It was revealed at the Game Developers Conference 2010, in San Francisco under the project name Ravensdale, and it has been in development since 2007. In 2012, Spellbound Entertainment went into administration, emerging as Black Forest Games. They have since planned on continuing the development… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

What people are saying
Mixed reception: praised for fun gameplay, but criticized for bugs and abandonment.
Many players enjoy the fast-paced, chaotic action and roguelike elements, calling it addictive and fun. The game is praised for its smooth controls, varied characters, and randomized levels that keep each run fresh. [3][5][21]
However, frequent crashes, game-breaking bugs, and a lack of updates have soured the experience for many. Some also complain about the shared camera in co-op and the grind-heavy difficulty. [10][13][27][34]

60 of 195 · most liked firstThis is, in a nutshell, a great little timekiller. Basically you have a number of playable characters with which you go through a series of levels. You kill hordes of goblins and orcs. At the end of each level is a boss waiting for you. Every character has its own gimmick. They have varying stats as well as different weapons. They each have an ability with a specific cooldown period. One shoots a large barrage of little rockets, another gets a short period of immensely boosted firerate, to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has tons of potential, that unfortunately went to waste. There are : + fluid, responsive controls and thus: fun platforming + varied gunplay with weapons that each feel powerful and unique in their own way + very nice looking backgrounds Still I feel cheated out of my time, because of how Rogue Stormers handles difficulty. You're underpowered, then you grind grind grind and become overpowered. You also gamble a lot. Wow, such design! Just to milk play time and mask the actual lack…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can only judge single player, but for this it's definitely worth the money. It's not an easy game. You really have to pay attention what you are doing and what's going on. There are a lot of hazards and the enemies give a hard fight. The random level creation can come up with some pretty wicked situations. One has to play carefully and smart. It's not 'casual' but pretty hardcore. Expect to die and rage-quit a lot in the beginning. Grafics are superb and controlls exact. The whole setting is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Run and gun action? Check. Heaps of unlockables? Check. Absolute chaos? Check. Rogue Stormers does many things, but it doesn’t disappoint. It’s an action-packed, rogue-like that you just can’t put down. There are various characters to choose from. Numerous perks and unlockables to bag. Oh and did I mention there’s pandemonium at every turn? Here’s a proper run down of what Black Forest Games’ latest creation has to offer. Lets start by talking about the story. It’s a somewhat simple one to be…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the only game I've ever refunded. I'll get that out of the way right now. It's not a game that I can even remotely recommend in its current state, as while I can see potential here, I don't know if this game even knows what potential it has, or where it really wants to go. This is a game I REALLY want to like, but I just can't in this condition. I was in great debate in buying this, because while I was ALL for it seeing the trailers and footage, the reviews made me wary. A lot of the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hate to do it to a game I got for free as a review copy--which I guess indicates that people shouldn't be getting review copies in the first place--but man, this game blows. A roguelike with extremely slow-paced action, mixed with the demand that you explore levels that have tons of nooks and crannies that contain resources that you absolutely NEED if you want to survive. The end result is that you'll end up dying after 20 or 40 minutes of agonizingly slow gameplay, lose everything, and then…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Abandoned with game breaking bugs. Was a very promising roguelike but with no update in 3 years, Black Forest Games has made it clear they have no plans on supporting their own games. Avoid.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game when working correctly. The last couple of weeks when playing the "Couch co-op" mode it randomly removes upgrades that have been aquired from each player. Makes getting to the last stages almost impossible. Will thumbs up once this bug is fixed.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Rogue Stormers is a really fun, and challenging game. It takes the twin stick shooting of Robotron 2084, the side scrolling shoot 'em up play of Contra, then adds a nice dash of Gauntlet's monster portals, and multiple classes. It is then placed in an oven, and baked to a golden brown. After which it is topped with some Rogue like elements like randomized environments, and perma death. Also it is very addictive, and has a challenge level right up there with the Dark Souls games. Ergo, you're…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Rogue Stormers née DieselStormers née Ravensdale was my most awaited game in 2016. After the absolutely brilliant Giana Sisters Twisted Dreams, what could have gone wrong? Well, everything. First, it wasn't easy to witness the pain and suffering Black Forest had in their two Kickstarter campaigns, but eventually, they did get started. Fast forward, and suddenly they're telling the world that their run and gun (and fun) game is going to be a roguelike grinder. WHYYYYY? Of course it's a poetic…

Kudos to the designers, as these backgrounds give so much depth and visual appeal to the game making every level stand out with detail. Some of the best visual environments of this genre I've ever…

The city needs to recruit troopers - no, shall we say, heroes, to eliminate the despicable Hector Von Goop. . . Sorry, I meant Hector Von Garg! Rogue Stormers is an action/rogue like / twin stick shooter game where you take control of one of five characters available and save the city of Ravensdale. When you launch the game, you…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →IMPORTANT: This game requires a resonably good and consistent connection to play online coop. It caused a friend of mine serious desyncronization issues, such as not being able to see the lightning hazards. Early access builds of Rogue Stormers were not very good, and notably did not have a cast of varying characters. This release build? Much improved, though at some level I lament the loss of weapon-customization, which was never actually implemented to my knowledge. I first became aware of…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Camera makes me sick. In a game full of action like this you'll be turning left and right a lot. The problem is your character isn't in the middle of the screen, they're more on the left or more on the right. When you turn the other direction the camera will whip around a whole lot, not including the jumping. The fact that you can't turn this off is a deal breaker for me. Hard pass. Excuse me while I go throw up now.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Early access lies. Bait and switch. The unfinished broken game in early access was more fun.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Rogue Stormers is a side scroller platformer shooter. It has RPG and roguelike elements as well. It can be quite fast paced and difficult. The gameplay will remind you of games like Metal Slug, Contra etc. The game also reminded me of Shoot Many Robots which is one of my favorite 2D shooter games. Graphics: The game looks gorgeous with very nice art-style, which Is dark and gloomy and really makes you feel like you’re in some kind of creepy atmosphere. The game runs very smooth. The FPS get…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Arcade rogue-like platformer with an excellent back story with refreshing, almost nostalgic, graphics. The sound effects et al. are decent but nothing spectactular. There are multiple characters to level up, semi-dynamic level generation, and a healthy amount of weapons/powerups to make building a character enjoyable--the large number of character perks not withstanding. Where Rogue Stormers falls short is in it's save mechanic--or lack there of. There is a tedium to replaying from the first…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought it with a friend to play in coop. Really good game if it wasn't for a bunch of bugs, mainly: -Game crashing on the final boss every time we fought it (about 5 separate attempts) -Enemies with aoe attacks stuck inside walls -Upgrades mysteriously vanishing after a few minutes from being picked up Still fun, but damn is it frustrating not being able to beat the game because of crashes.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A very cautious recommendation for this one. It's barely out of early access, there's lots of small glitches, performance drops and probably multiplayer issues (I played solo). Wouldn't recommend grabbing it before some patching is done and even then probably during a sale. During development this game got changed hugely from the original vision, this final version is now a roguelite twin-stick platformer shooter, similar to Risk of Rain and other such Binding of Isaac-types. You die, you get…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It was difficult but I liked it :) Roguelike + platformer = fun times
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Couldn't find the fun in this game. What should be a fast paced mass slaughter is instead a sluggish game, with pretty bland gameplay.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's good, but is it 20 Bucks Good? No. Is it sale good? Yes. Pros: *It's a platforming Roguelike, you can play it with a mouse and keyboard (I prefer this method) OR you can play it via controllers (Still good, just don't play slime girl with it, she's better with keyboard and I'll explain why later) and it's concept is pretty simple one to grasp. You jump on stuff, shoot bad guys, jump on more stuff, shoot more bad guys... collect powerups via chests, stores, POW guys. Navigate a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've only played this game in single player mode, so can really only comment on that experience. But as a fan of side scrolling twin stick shooters, I love this game. Rogue Stormers does not hold your hand. There are no long tutorials telling you how to play the game. From the outset, prepare to kill or be killed. Some enemies are easy. Others require a lot of fire power. You get upgrades, and you got to choose whether to keep one or gamble on something else. You even got to decide about…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The co-op online mode with multiple people has a couch co-op camera. Meaning everyone has a shared camera which means that if you play as 4 people you can't even see anything. I only play these kinds of games with friends, if you do not play co-op then this does not interest you. The game is perfectly fine without the camera, you go through all the levels and sometimes their layout changes. Once you get rocketed into a level you find the end killing every orc in the way of you. You can find…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Think Contra + Risk of Rain. Side scrolling shooter supporting 2-4 player co-op. Pros: - Roguelike mechanics mean each run is different - Fast paced action and lots of killing - Decent soundtrack Cons: - Crashes. My number 1 complaint. Happens way too frequently to ignore. Made worse since the game revolves around unlocks and crashing will mean you lose some things you've unlocked that run. - Feels like the visual effects should have been cleaned up, often the screen is just a mess of effects…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hello there i wanna give my review to this game. I played this game nearly over 1 year, the most time in the "early access" version and was able to play "different" version of this game. And i got the feeling that they had listen to the most suggestion which i made. Befor i go the positiv/negativ parts i need to say, i cant describe with words what i feel. Positiv: I love the art, the music fits, the 5 Characters fullfile their role pretty good and i am completly caught in the atmosphere. It…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While this game takes some getting used to at first, once you get the hang of the character you are playing as this game becomes a blast to play. The only problem I've had with the game so far is that multiplayer (at least for public matches) is fairly dead (right now) and there are certain parts of the levels that cause slowdown. Other than that, I thoroughly recommend this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Devs changed the game from an rpg into a roguelite, this is not the game i bought and as far as i know there's no way to access the pre roguelite version, which wouldn't be too worth it anyways since that was in early access.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Underrated twin stick shooter that should appeal to fans of proprotector and contra. The core gameplay and gun play is decent, theres plenty of enemies and weapons, randomly generated levels. I feel I got a great bargain with the promotion today but if youre a fan of the genre it may even be worth the full price.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Extremely irresponsible developers
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There is something about the games graphic design I dislike, but I can't quite put the finger on it. I think the developer needs to put more end rooms in, like 3-4 more bosses, maybe another variation on the final boss and more of these golden-sentry balls. But I put 30 hours into it and killed the final boss with every Diese... Rogue Störmer, so I have no reason to not give a thumbs up
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The 1st 2 classes are the best classes in the game, and everything you unlock after are worse and worse than the starting 2. So-- the game has bad pacing, and the rogue-like is sort of bad. The way to beating the game was to have one friend take all upgrades, while I just supported him. Fixes would be to balance the classes, not have you unlock all characters by the end, since the game has zero re-playablility, and also balance drops in between mulitple players. They should share drops, so…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent lite roguelike shmup. 5 characters, random generated levels, nice graphics, fun wepons and items, precise controls, perks that stay on you char. even if you die, 4 couch co-op multiplayer... My best black friday 2016 buy.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a fun platformer shooter, and it's very hard. It's also a rogue-like, so every time I had to replay the first level (which was plenty), it was like playing an entirely different level every time. Also apparently the game saves when you reach a new level, but if you die once (which again, is very easy), it's game over for good. So if you think you can handle that go for it. #2hard4me #IamBad

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is really good, but the controls could be better, and it's still got quite a lot of broken areas, monsters getting stuck in walls, etc. HOWEVER, Aside from all the cons, this game is still very playable and probably a lot better than it started out, I know a lot of people were dissapointed in this game before but I think it's pretty great myself and is sweet for a couch game. 8.5/10 in my book, could use some fixes though.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I got this thinking it'd be a good couch co-op game but it ended up being more addictive as a single player experience. New patch released a bunch of fixes people were complaining about. I'm glad I got this, it's been a lot of fun so far. I hope the devs find better balance options for couch co-op. It's so much harder playing co-op than single player.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Rogue Stormers is another game part of the recent wave of rogulikes / roguelites that has brought about many fine titles like Binding of Isaac, Rogue Legacy, Hero Siege and Enter the Gungeon. It is not a dual-stick shooter, however, but rather a side-scrolling shooter, gameplay-wise comparable to titles like Metal Slug and, to an extent, the aforementioned Roge Legacy or Castlevania, though obviously with less focus on melee combat. It does offer a few unique twists though, such as complete…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I do not recommend this game to anyone. This was a nice try at a side scrolling, bullet hell shoot'em up, but it seems to fall short. The replay value of the game is somewhat lack luster and the characters are not that interesting. Along with that the game is so reliant on you getting "level ups" while playing for you to even make your player stronger in game. This leads me to my second issue with the game. The game frequently crashes after a couple hours play time. This means that…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →nice arcade game! i recommend to play with one friend, single play is little booring.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Terrible unoptimized and buggy coop roguelite shooter. You can level up your characters to lvl60, but why bother when 5 levels are all you need to beat this game. Don't waste your cash on this and simply replay your old games if you feel the urge to play coop shooters with your friends
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game, while fun, is full of bugs. Half the time when I want to play, I get a bug where all of the start up menus disappear and I have to tell the game to revalidate the local content . My brother and I have yet to successfully complete a co-op game, not because of difficulty but because the game randomly crashes half-way through. Gonna have to go with a not recommended on this one.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →To be honest, I struggled a long time whether I should get this game or not. From reviews, I got the impression that this game is pretty much designed as a coop experience. I was afraid, that as a consequence the SP would lack fun because of that focus on coop. If you have similar feelings, let me assure you: my skepticism turned out to be unfounded. I really enjoy this game. The controls feel tight in that you don't feel cheated if you die. And you will die a lot in this game. I love BFG's…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Having never been a platformer fan (let’s say I’m more into strategy and turn based stuff) It's the first game of its kind I can get anywhere with. The difficulty is solely based on the amount of mistakes one does but that's about it; every level is manageable when you concentrate. The atmosphere has a bit of a dark, hellish comic flavour, a bit like old-school dungeon game; the main colour scheme is blood red and acid green most of the time. The atmosphere is futuristic and primitive at the…

Short story: Its a twinstick shooter with tight controlls, nice Skill ceiling and well done progression per playthrough aswell as Metawise per character Controlls/ Movementabilities (These are the tools you use to overcome the odds of bullethell/rougelikes) and Progression are the key features I look for in this Genre. And for me Rogue Stormers delivert: The controls( playing keyboard and Mouse , rebound for my left hand ;) are very…

Reminds me of Metal Slug and Metroid. Very hard but definitely fun - full of action and explosions.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First, I'd like to be clear that I received this game for free, from a high score event at PAX East 2016; Rogue Stormers is a fantastic mix of Metal Slug, Rogue Legacy, and Risk of Rain - The smooth run and gun of Metal Slug (and saving prisioners who have had items the whole time!), the random level layout of many rougelike games, the small upgrades persisting after death of Rogue Legacy, and the random non-persistant occassionally wacky power ups from Risk of Rain all make for a very…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A fastpaced and surprisingly fun and addictive Roguelite shooter. Players take control of one or more of a group of five soldiers out to take back their steampunk city from its tyrannical ruler and his army of mutants and magic-fuel powered machines. The game combines fast-paced twin stick shooting with tough as nails roguelike elements and has very tight and fluid combat. The graphics are amazing, the enemies are varied and fun to kill, and the boss fights are suitably intense. My only…

It reminds me a bit of Shoot Many Robots, but it has a cool Gauntlet feel to the levels and how they're broken up and it brings that sweet, sweet Roguelite touch with satisfying character progression per play and slower but steady permanent perk progression as you collect experience orbs. It's a difficult balance to get right since it's the line between "classes" and customization, but this game has the right combination of random start and progressive…
