60 of 357 · most liked firstTL;DR: A flawed but enjoyable open-world action RPG carried mostly by Team Ninja’s excellent combat system. The story, visuals, open-world structure, and PC optimization could be better, but the weapon variety and fighting mechanics make it worth playing if you enjoy samurai action games. Rise of the Ronin is one of those games I can recommend while fully understanding why many people have mixed feelings about it. It is not Team Ninja at their absolute best in every area, but when the combat…

unlabelledView post →This is probably the most difficult review I've written to date. I wanted to like this game, and I mostly enjoyed it, but I honestly can't recommend it. If you're looking at other reviews, the stuttering problem when the game first launched has been fixed, and the crashing at startup was due to a Windows update and has been patched. This game wants to be a looter slasher I guess, but it just... isn't. None of the weapons and armor you get are unique in any way. Some of them have set…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's certainly not better than Nioh 2, and it's clear that they cut a lot of corners graphically to make this work on the Katana engine, but the combat is very good. So good, that this really doesn't deserve to have such mixed reviews on that basis alone. It's also a massive game that lasted far longer than I expected. If you're on the fence, I'd strongly recommend at least giving it a try.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One weird positive about games where you can select your character’s gender but the devs definitely planed the game out as if you were a dude is that its very easy to be a huge lesbian haha (Playing Rise of the Ronin)
unlabelledView post →Is the game great? Absolutely, been loving it, been taking my time beating it and unlocking every section, every chapter, even the secret bosses. Is it currently, as of this moment, broken as all hell and unplayable? Yes, thanks to windows but they need to take this into account and correct it on their end. No other game at the moment that I'm playing is going through this issue and it's all thanks to the latest windows update. 0xC000005 is the error code and as of right now there's no fix so…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its not a bad game perse but they downgraded the graphics since release reducing the LODS and grass heavily for every user as "perfomance patchs" to the point it looked like a different game and never bothered to fix it. This is bad behavior and unfortunately pretty common on PC lately.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →straight up doesn't work anymore Error code:0xC0000005 with no sign of it ever being fixed avoid until this is fixed, damn shame since rise of the ronin is such a great game
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Team Ninja's sacrificial game to fund their main IP while testing out Katana Engine in open world setting.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Got scammed, accidentally bought Rice of the Ronin. Should have been suspicious, seeing as it was in an Aldi. Still, Rice flavour and quality: 9/10 Ah yes, vanilla Sekiro My wife’s boyfriend calls it Lite Nioh It feels like Ubisoft made a team ninja game. Take that in whichever way your biases will. As a big fan of Ghost of Tsushima I knew this wouldn't be the same caliber. But I didn't expect it to come so close! I'm not going to compare them, I think that's unfair for most games anyway,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's hard to believe this is actually a Team Ninja game. Putting aside the abysmal performance and terrible graphics from trying to squeeze an open-world experience onto the Katana engine... the combat (arguably the most important part of a TN game) is absolutely horrible. After 30 hours of Wo Long, Nioh, NG... you've had more than enough time to internalize the flow and pace of combat. After 30 hours of RotR you are still met with endless frustration. I am at the point that I dread any…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Having played through the whole game and completed about 95% of it, here is the deal: Rise of the Ronin is an open-world, parry-based combat, semi-historical videogame where you play one of a pair of ninja twins, and involve yourself in the events of Japanese history in the decade of the 1850s, towards the tail-end of Japan transitioning from a medieval-style government system to something more similar to its European and American contemporaries. You could consider this a Japanese Assassin´s…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The most underrated game I played this year is definitely Rise of the Ronin. A little rough around the edges, but it's an open world RPG with romance and choices and the combat of Nioh. You can also make a hot character with FAT tits.
unlabelledView post →I waited all these years for this game to be playable.... I really needed it to be a nice and polished game... loved the gameplay and concept... but THE GAME runs really BAD, sound cuts off, stutters, NPC load really slow... how tf did the devs leave the game in a state like this .... negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I had to change my review because the game-breaking bug caused by Windows Updates has apparently been fixed. I haven't encountered any consistent crashes caused by that bug, nor have I encountered the more random CTDs and BSODs that occurred after I uninstalled the problematic Windows Updates. For now, I'm cautiously optimistic. Bugs aside, I absolutely ADORE this game. I bought it on the PS5 at launch, and bought it again to play on my significantly beefier PC. With my 14900KF and 5070ti, I…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am so, so sad that this game never truly got fixed on PC. Loads of framerate problems, and very frequent crashing totally ruining the experience of an otherwise solid open-world game. When you're not stuttering or crashing, it looks nice and combat is fun. Don't think the story is something to take seriously, but I physically haven't been able to get very far, so I haven't even gotten to the meat of the game. Get it on sale for the PS5 instead- this version is basically unplayable.

unlabelledView post →Yes, but... That's the most important part of this review. Do I recommend this game? Yes. But that's with some MAJOR caveats and flaws. This game is a marvelous example of overcomplicating games and bloating with content. Let me list some examples. I believe there are 52 characters you can have a bond with (4 levels of friendship) and each tier gives you a kind of reward, some unique and some not. You have bond missions and gifts and conversations that increase your bond with the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First 10 hours or so are fun for a new game, after that it feels like a typical Ubisoft open world slop where you run arround doing mini errands for zone completions in a bland, pixelated and boring open world game. The combat is gets a 10/10 for a team ninja game tho, I enjoyed that.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dev doesn't care about the game, until now they still haven't released any patch to fix the error 0000005
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the worst running game I have ever played. I've played hundreds of games over the last 30 years, and none of them have run this bad. It is incredible that anyone would spend all of this time developing a game, and then release it in such a poor state. Cyberpunk 2077? 60 fps is no problem. Rise of the Ronin? Literally less than 10fps with DLSS and reduced resolution. I will give this game exactly one more try before refunding, but I am deeply pessimistic.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is such an underrated gem. It is not just spin-off experiment in anticipation of Nioh 3, no, it is a full fledged open-world Soulslike with so much content that is it probably only beaten by Elden Ring in terms of volume. It also probably has some of the most interesting and experimental ideas, such as weapon styles. The setting is also very interesting and not often covered. It encourages exploration and the map doesn't just feel like a Ubisoft checklist. I wasn't here during launch…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game boils down to one thing: "The combat just doesn't feel good." I'll explain the details below. On Combat with Enemies: Rise of the Ronin is a game built around "deflecting enemy attacks with parries." It leans much closer to Wo Long than Nioh. However, because "you can't land your parries," the combat ends up "not feeling good." First of all, every single attack from every single enemy is a feint. Furthermore, there is a mix of attacks where the visual animation and the actual parry…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is broken state after Windows update, developers remain silent. I purchased the game and now I cannot play it, in many cases this will be considered a scam.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I picked up Rise of the Ronin during a winter sale, fully aware of the mixed (and sometimes brutal) reviews floating around. Expectations were kept safely low. Surprisingly, after spending a good amount of time with it, the game turned out to be far more enjoyable than its reputation suggests—provided you know exactly what you’re coming for. First, Combat. It's Where Ronin Truly Shines The combat is excellent. In fact, it’s comfortably more complex and rewarding than Ghost of Tsushima.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Rise of the Ronin finished 9/10 combat (no open world game touches it) 7/10 open world (fun to navigate, really cool setting: 1800s Japan) 0/10 story (what the fuck)
unlabelledView post →You may laugh at me, but this game is everything that Ghost of Tsushima and AC Shadows tried to be and failed. I'm not joking when i saw this is the ultimate Samurai Game. I'm deeply fascinated by how cool this game is and i don't know why Rise of the Ronin didn't get as popular as the two games mentioned above. Every is just better, no only the story but combat and worldbuilding. Plus, costumization is insane. Every game should have this insane level of costumization. 9/10. Its not…

unlabelledView post →the performance is really bad, Why I just get only 30fps in the city? I'm using RTX 5070 with 2k resolution screen and this card only run with 30-40% power. Really bad
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you love Japanese history and semi-realistic swordplay (Tsushima, Witcher, etc.), this is it. The open world isn't huge but is well crafted. Good storytelling + voice acting is top notch. Produces decent framerates on an old 4070 too (medium-high settings). The game only receives negative reviews because of a crashing error related to Windows, but don't let that deter you. The error has already been patched by the devs. Go, buy it!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →To anyone who might be asking, no I don't plan on getting Rise of the Ronin. Not because I think it's bad, but because it's a PS5 exclusive and I'm not spending $500 to play a single game.
unlabelledView post →This needs to be cheap, as the performance takes a big hit, coz we are paying way too much for a poorly optimized game. Refunded
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Let me start by just saying this is one of the most underrated games on steam. If you like what you see, and can run it, you should buy it. Period. Most enjoyable and intricate melee combat system I've experienced in my 30 years of gaming. Feels great to play through and through. Great cast of characters, and you can actually interact with almost every single one of them. The game never really gets boring, stale. Different activities are alright but the main driving force is combat here. Voice…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After spending an obscene amount of time with it, I can safely say that Rise of the Ronin is a very mixed experience. This is Team Ninja’s first true open-world game, and it shows. While the game isn’t as bloated or exhausting as many Ubisoft-style open worlds, exploration often feels uninspired and heavily focused on map-clearing. It’s no coincidence that many main missions take place in instanced areas rather than in the open world itself. The story is serviceable but forgettable, and…

unlabelledView post →Rise of the Ronin isn't just another open-world samurai game—it feels like the spiritual successor to Tenchu that I've been waiting decades for. Ironically, while many expected Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice to carry that legacy because of its stealth and ninja themes, it ultimately became something entirely different: a fast-paced action game centered on relentless sword duels and boss encounters. Rise of the Ronin, on the other hand, embraces the deliberate, methodical style of infiltration and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TLDR: All in all if you want a grounded semi realistic soulslike (No crazy fantasy, magic, or monsters), with mostly realistic art style, fantastic combat, decent stealth, and a satisfying open world with multiple traversal options, I really can't recommend this game enough. Fix the performance and the few bugs and I'd easily give this an 8 or a 9/10. Loved it Performance is bad. But wow, what a game. I bought it on sale just out of curiosity and it was not what I expected at all. Some of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I’m usually not someone who leaves negative reviews, even when I don’t enjoy a game, but in my personal experience this was one of the most frustrating titles I’ve played in years. Unfortunately, I found large parts of it difficult to enjoy, and at times it felt close to unplayable for me. Here are the main issues I experienced: -The game relies heavily on menus and layered sub-menus, many of which felt unnecessarily complicated and unintuitive. I often found myself struggling just to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At first I was hesitating getting this game, since I tends to read reviews and considering before buying, but after I decided I wanna try this, then I couldn't even stop and played for 10hrs straight, it's been awhile since I got a game got me hooked this much, hope you all will have fun playing this game I like I do when you decide to get it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →satisfied the itch of wanting a Nioh Open world but without the Youkai enemies. just good ol fashion Samurai Swordplay. *pulls out a revolver*
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Playing Shadows and Rise of the Ronin this year makes me realise I'd love the next Red Dead Redemption game to be set in 1860s Japan. Obviously many Western movies that influenced RDR are inspired by Kurozawa so seems like a natural fit
unlabelledView post →I can finally play Rise of the Ronin on PC! Heard so many great things about this game, especially the cat petting minigame.
unlabelledView post →Had to upgrade my CPU to enjoy this. It’s extremely CPU-heavy, so avoid it if you’re below or around the recommended processor specs. 5x worse optimization than wo long fallen dynasty. The graphics are just about aight and look nice maxed out, but nothing special. Best part is the combat and the story. Both very engaging and the recurring characters are chill. Since it’s based on real events, you can’t change every outcome, but it’s still enjoyable. My only issue is occasionally fighting the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love Team Ninja games for their excellent combat gameplay and usually more focused experience, settings, level design etc. Ninja Gaiden and Nioh are some of my fav games. But now, they too want to jump on this big epic open-world RPG journey that is so popular in AAA. Sure, it can be done well like Elden Ring, Witcher 3 or Red Dead Redemption, but it can also be done badly like your typical Ubislop games Assassin's Creed, Farcry or countless other examples, and sadly Rise of the Ronin falls…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Would be fun but optimization is a mess. Do not buy. I don’t think they will be fixing it if they haven’t yet.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's been out for 9 months and it still runs terribly, with the graphics settings making almost zero change to performance. And it still has save corruption issues, which just cost me half my progress after 12 hours of play. It's a fun game, but don't bother with this in PC.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →More Rise of the Ronin tonight. I think I’m nearing the end of the second act. At least I hope I am! This game is fun but way longer than I anticipated 😮💨
unlabelledView post →Rise of the Ronin is a much better game than it has any business being. Yeah, it looks like a budget title next to Ghost of Tsushima and Elden Ring, but it’s its own thing and we need more stuff in this AAa space (that’s double and a half A)
unlabelledView post →Im only 14 hours in (most of that time is stuck in a loading screen) and the combat is so fun and the story is really good so far. HOWEVER, the optimization of this game is terrible. There is way too many bugs and glitches that makes it unplayable. I can't even get through most missions without getting stuck in a loading screen from a cutscene, then having to close the game. My PC is pretty good so I know i'm not at fault here. I get stuck in black screens right at the menu constantly. I…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ironically my favorite game from Koei, despite the reviews. The story is actually decent, combat is really fun, customization is great, all NPC's are largely likeable. 9/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm 10 hours into Rise of the Ronin and loving it. Really impressed by a lot of its design decisions, and framing Team Ninjas high skill-ceiling combat with an open world paces it in a way that just works and makes me want to learn everything. Honestly kinda shocked by how good this game is so far
unlabelledView post →Visually looks a bit like a PS3 game between Assassin Creed and Ghost of Tsushima, overall great combat/gameplay and strong historical setting, but bloated open-world elements, map clutter, and a feeling of being stuck between linear design and open-world expectations, leading to a "good but not great" experience, especially with its bland narrative/voice acting.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bad optimization and a generic open world structure drag this game down a lot. The combat itself is fine... Fast, fun and snappy. But the open world checklist structure along with severe performance issues really drag the game down. If you're fond of ubisoft style open worlds and want more, this game might do it for you, If you're looking for a more traditional Team Ninja experience I'd advise to stay way as the game can get really repetitive.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i fucking LOVE when a game gives you something used by a boss character without nerfing it too heavily (Rise of the Ronin continues to impress)
unlabelledView post →Rise of the Ronin sorta got overwhelmed by the many hits of 2024; and although not without flaws, it's still a really fun game that we kinda think got a little overlooked among the noise.🍁 Full Review: www.rpgfan.com/review/rise-...
unlabelledView post →These were my blade twins I made in Rise of the Ronin. I have to get back and finish that game! It really is a fantastic Edo-period game with romance and great music. I was obsessed with Minthara back when I played, so tried to make my twin look like her. 😂
