My boyfriend and I sit two feet apart... He's playing a game filled with war crimes, mass causalities, horrific factories and lifestyles that make you wish you lived in poverty. I'm playing a game with cozy farming, long standing benevolent kings and queens, and personal homes designed for each person... And somehow, we are both playing the same game. Rimworld is like that, its up to you to figure out how you want to play it. I play it more like the sims, I want my pawns to have a long…

I came for The Sims. I stayed for the chaos. 1,295 hours played (with Biotech, Anomaly, and Odyssey). I’ve never really considered myself a “gamer.” I grew up playing The Sims, Nintendo DS games, Bratz, interior design games, and whatever else my 90s childhood threw at me. What I loved most was creating something, watching it grow, and escaping into a world I could shape. Then I found RimWorld. At first, I almost didn’t buy it because it looked… overwhelming. Every screenshot made me think,…

Story time: So I once opted to live entirely under a mountain during a game. I was fed up with raids getting through my defences or crashing through my roofs, so the only way in or out of the base was down a long tunnel with a big castle gates at the end that the attackers would need to smash through. Either side I built bunkers that I could fire out of, but the attackers couldn't get into, with the only access to the bunkers being from within my mountain base itself. This worked really…

Back 8 years ago, I genuinely used to feel crazy for playing Rimworld. Like who are you gonna talk about to about that one crazy pawn who keeps setting your stockroom on fire over not eating at a table? Or about the first time you ever had to deal with a drop pod raid? Despite all that though, I find myself looking back on everything. Not just the game itself, but gaming as a whole. And it opened my eyes to see Rimworld as more than just a game I play, but as a massive project countless…

Don't buy this game if you value your time, it'll ruin your life. You'll put off doing anything productive in favor of playing this piece of software that can only be described as virtual crack. Your colonists' lives will be more important than your own, and soon enough you'll be homeless and won't be able to play anymore, meaning you'll have to sell your body behind a wallmart to afford running the game at a cybercafe or something. If you're fine with going through all of that, then…

I'd love to recommend this game to my friends, but every other year it becomes a more expensive product, and I just... can't. People will use arguments like, "The base game is perfectly fine, just play it and if you want more, get the DLCs later." This ignores the fact that game developers commonly leave out features that feel like they belong in the base game so they can sell them later. I'm not claiming that's what happened here, but it easily could be, and nobody would be the wiser for it.…

some interesting math for me. this game plus all dlc is 114.95 as of where and when I am at this point. 114.95/6007.8 is my play time. that not quite .02 cents each hour of gameplay at this point. I think ive got my moneys worth wrung out of the game. I wonder how low I can make that stat. we will have to find out in a few thousand more hours.

I pirated this game in 2016. Just bought it officially. Make of that what you will. RimWorld isn't really a colony sim. It's a course in systems thinking. Food affects mood. Mood affects work. Work affects defense. Defense affects everything. You don't learn that from a tutorial — you learn it when your best crafter has a breakdown in the middle of a raid because you forgot to build them a bedroom. I'm genuinely smarter because of this game. Not in a "I know more facts" way — in a "I now…

i honestly dont know how to feel about this game. When it comes to almost all features, it does them perfectly. It truly is one of the best Colony Sims out there. There are an endless amount of reasons why its good. However, the base game with no DLCs feels bland, there simply isnt enough to do. And obviously, this is why the DLCs exist. But at the end of the day, they cost so much money. Why do i need to pay enough money to buy entirely seperate games, for just extra addons to a vanilla game?

This game was made as a post-apocalyptic sci-fi version of Dwarf Fortress. It was first advertised in the DF forums, and it aggressively sells itself over Dwarf Fortress. Its DLC regularly takes the ideas of existing mods and makes you pay £20 for them, while its origin, DF, has been free for years, or £20 once and once only for some music and graphical upgrades, with more depth literally and metaphorically. I have to compare Rimworld to its point of inspiration, and due to its comparative…
