It brings the game lightyears forward in graphic quality and playability. There are some settings that you should change in steams target box for this game: "+set r_mode -1 +set r_fullscreen 1 +set r_customwidth 1920 +set r_customheight 1080 +set r_customaspect 2 +set com_hunkMegs 512 +set com_zoneMegs 96" without quotes. This will fix most of the crashing, hanging, odd screen sizes, etc. For…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Peak in game multi-player communication was achieved in Return to Castle Wolfenstein with its vchat system and I'm not kidding.
unlabelledView post →In MUCH COOLER surprise remaster/remake news... Return To Castle Wolfenstein on PC now has its Xbox-exclusive mission, enemies, weapons, etc. Finally complete! Free addon for RealRTCW, which is basically a Night Dive style 'best of all worlds' remaster of RTCW. You just need to own the base game.
unlabelledView post →Just a little late to the party, but the console-exclusive Egypt episode for Return To Castle Wolfenstein will soon be coming to PC. Still won't be out until May, but it'll be available as part of RealRTCW, which is like a community-made Night Dive-style expanded remaster. Base game is ~$2 now BTW.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →To play this game, once you have this purchased on steam the mod becomes available for free download. The old games client is a bit broken and outdated so use to be able to play this game in the modern day. playing this game for the first time is like playing half-life for the first time. Anyways, [Return to Castle Wolfenstein] is an amazing FPS. pretty similar gameplay experience to half-life in terms of needing to manage your weapons/health/armor and what not as you progress, but this…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Playing more Return to Castle Wolfenstein for my 2026 backlog list. This game is so goofy but so very fun and cathartic at this particular moment in history, and I'm so glad that I chose to revisit it this year. It's still peak.
unlabelledView post →it's #ScanlineSunday, you know what that means!! that's right, shooting Nazis in Real Return to Castle Wolfenstein, a mod that upgrades the 2001 game for modern systems. and, of course, hooking it up to a CRT at 160hz. we return to fry everyone with a Tesla gun and see a Nazi get turned into Grunty
unlabelledView post →The only time in my entire life that a video game scared me was when I was 6 playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein on my grandpa’s PC. I got tired of losing on the second level and booted up his save file in the laboratory to see what the rest of the game was like. Huge mistake, nightmares for weeks
unlabelledView post →Finished Return to Castle Wolfenstein. What a game, this type of shooter is unmatched even by modern releases. I am not going to get every achievement for RealRTCW, as some of them have very obtuse requirements, like map-specific stuff, & with a sourceport that doesn't let you load individual maps-
unlabelledView post →So much fun. Great atmosphere, simple mechanics, no cash shop. Wish games were still like this.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →By they way, Return to Castle Wolfenstein has a source port that enables co-op mode, so you and a loved one can traipse through Nazi Germany together exterminating goose-stepping vermin. RTCW often comes up in Bethesda sales for super-cheap, keep an eye out for this classic id Tech 3 engine game!
unlabelledView post →Ah regretfully I must issue something of a correction: In Return to Castle Wolfenstein, you CANNOT PUNCH the n*zis. One can only, in the video game: -Kick them -Shoot them -Stab them -Blow them up -Set them on fire -Electrocute them -Let them get mauled by the living dead, and other..things..

And he was playing the 4 mission, where game is starting to give you a hard time with all... let's say demonic stuff. I personally just beat it on normal, and i spend 2 weeks to beat it ! But i'm happy as ♥♥♥♥ that i finally beat sherevre of my childhood. And if you, reading this, loving FPS games and still didn't played this game, where…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →25 years ago, this game got me into the shooter genre. Besides the Half Life series one of the best games i have ever played. Now after all these years finally legal available in Germany.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best classic FPS games of all time. It's a classic. Great campaign, lots of action, solid story, epic setting and amazing music. It's a must if you're into classic shooters. As a matter of fact, this game was the inspiration for the creation of Call Of Duty. Just let that fact sink in. If you're not too scared of looking at old graphics (Quake 3 engine), you should give it a try and I hope you enjoy it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think of this game and recall shanking people several times over in rapid succession with a knife. That memory fondly reminds me of my favourite city, Glasgow, Scotland. This game is GOATed. And I don’t say that lightly. The gameplay, story, environments, characters, cutscenes, and enemies are just fantastic. Simple as. This game was born of passion, written cinematically, and built with enduring quality. When you enjoy this game as much as you inevitably will, the older graphics become a…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Return to Castle Wolfenstein is a landmark first-person shooter that represents a crucial moment in the evolution of the genre, blending classic run-and-gun design with horror elements and cinematic ambition in a way that felt bold at the time and still feels distinctive today. Set during World War II but infused with occult experimentation and pulp-style sci-fi, the game places players once again in the boots of B.J. Blazkowicz as he infiltrates Nazi strongholds, secret research facilities,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Return to Castle Wolfenstein is a definitive masterpiece from the golden age of PC gaming that still holds its ground as a uniquely atmospheric shooter. For many players, it was a foundational experience, a game that successfully modernised the "run and gun" mechanics of its predecessor while introducing a dark, supernatural edge that redefined what a World War II shooter could be. The game’s greatest strength is its tonal variety. While it begins as a traditional escape-from-prison military…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Oldie but goldie. Very good fps game since 2001. Developers did outstanding job that made the mark for popular franchise even today. Its brutal its scary and bites with your blood. The biggest stand out factor is how atmospheric it feels. Gameplay holds the torch here and pushed your gameplay experience to the limits. Its not easy even for rusty as myself I felt compelled to push forward and prove myself that its doable. Its not a cookie cutter but bullet mayhem. Nostalgic trip. This game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The first time I played this game was when I was 7. Since then, a lot of new Wolfenstein games have been released but none of them are like this one, this game is just goated, and it's my favorite. Every time I play this game, nostalgia hits me. I would highly recommend this game...
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This really was a good game, the story and gameplay was engaging and the atmosphere of this game is top-notch. Playing this game on Bring'em on! can be annoying for the first time playing like me but it is a balanced difficulty, thankfully you can save on any parts you might die a ton so do that.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Return to Castle Wolfenstein (2001) Despite of some dated design choices, this game oozes atmosphere, and still unmatched even by modern releases. One of the best entries in the Wolfenstein franchise. If you haven't played and you like old school shooters, this one is a must play.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Random Game of the Day Day 326 - Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Tides of War My favorite Wolfenstein game ever. It slowly goes from a WWII game to a straight up horror game. Grew up watching my Dad play the PC version, then eventually picked up this copy. Apparently this copy has some extra content
unlabelledView post →Ah, the good old days when people still supported blowing up nazis. If this came out today, gamers would call it "woke" or "DEI" or whatever the latest dumbass buzzword is, but not in 2001, back then we still remembered the .30 caliber solution to fascists. RTCW hasn't aged quite as perfectly as some of its peers, you'll really want a fan patch (I used iortcw, ignore my playtime as I didn't bother to make it play nice with steam) for technical reasons, but it's still good ♥♥♥♥, definitely…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Small blast from the past. One of the first FPS I saw on a friends computer. Played on Linux with the RealRTCW Mod in widescreen. Fun little game still, I am impressed of the secrets the devs build into the game. Kind of different from today. Oh and ♥♥♥♥ Nazis, facists and the AfD!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Return to Castle Wolfenstein is finally uncut in Germany after 24 years. The classic PC shooter now arrives with its original symbols, names and story intact. Here’s what changed and why it took so long. #Wolfenstein #RetroGaming
unlabelledView post →I mostly enjoyed my time with this one, though I did encounter a few bugs here and there. In a desperate attempt to give the Axis the upper hand and win World War II, Himmler tries to resurrect prince Heinrich I and his knights. That's all you need to know, everything else serves as a vehicle for Blazkowicz to blast some Nazis, which is all I expected from a Wolfenstein game. On the graphics front, it looks good and is on par with other games from 2001. The game is quite inconsistent in its…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →best Wolfenstein game, period.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →9/10. Even after all these years, Return to Castle Wolfenstein remains one of the greatest first-person shooters ever made. It perfectly blends historical military action with sci-fi occult horror. The atmosphere in the crypts is genuinely creepy, and the weapon gunplay feels incredibly punchy. If you are playing this today, DO NOT play it raw vanilla. Install the "RealRTCW" mod from the Steam store. It is completely free if you own this game, and it modernizes the engine with widescreen…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First impressions: Feels really good to play. Very old school of course but I feel thats why you would pick this over new style FPSes. Something about how enemies behave, they hide, they don't give up, they keep you reloading. Reminds me of hotline miami where you burst into a room and die multiple times until you go all John Wick on them. I love these kind of games. And the story is not so bad either (Bloodrayne tier). Very fun and definitely a product of it's time. Post game thoughts: Yeah…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the kind of game that puts hair on your chest. Combat is good, soundtrack is fantastic, Id Tech 3 engine runs smoothly, WWII story that plays with both advanced technology and the supernatural, I also sense a bit of Indiana Jones in here. It's an old game from 2001 so do expect it to be a bit rough in certain places, but it's otherwise great. I'd recommend playing this with the iortcw sourceport and a good autoexec file, maybe upscaled textures if you're inclined as they can be…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Return to Castle Wolfenstein was such a good game. The multiplayer especially was just fantastic. I'll never forget the beachhead or the way the engineer says "dynamite planted"
unlabelledView post →If you see this, QTP with a video game that transports you back to your childhood my mom loved it (Later on I would play Return to Castle Wolfenstein lol)
unlabelledView post →This year's Christmas game is The Great Circle because the Indiana Joneses are Christmas films. This supplemented by the old regulars, Return to Castle Wolfenstein and World in Conflict because who doesn't like foiling Russian invasions and killing Nazis during the festive season.
unlabelledView post →This is still the best Wolfenstein ever released! No annoying unskippable cutscenes, no forced walking- and do nothing-sections and no second-hand embarrassing whiny monologue. Just doing what Blazko does best: Killing Nazis! Top-notch OST, perfect atmosphere and a crunchy difficulty. Just like a Wolfenstein is supposed to be.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Even after downloading fixes, the game still crashes just when you load a save. So if you want to play the game, just don't die. Otherwise, you'll have to reboot the game. I'm aware there are more "fixes" to download since the ones I already installed don't fix the "Loading a save crashes your game" issue. I'm not doing that. It's so tiring having to download a bunch of sh*t just to get a game to work properly. This isn't worth the trouble.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →worked in the past, then steam updated some dlls and now it doesn't launch neither valve nor the devs got around to fix it and game is virtually unplayable on steam look, it's still return to castle wolfenstein, game is fine, just get it on GOG
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love this game, too bad the steam version doesn't work, so thank god for source ports :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game DESPERATELY needs a remaster / upgrade / compatibility. etc.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've been watching my dad play this game and now I've been playing this game and I loved every second of this but I will warn you, If you play on windows 11 You can experience a glitch where when you die it just turns off, but it happens sometimes. Everything beside that, I would really recommend it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is Return to Castle Wolfenstein (2001) btw
unlabelledView post →Just beat Return to Castle Wolfenstein, fantastic game. I really appreciate that the weapoms feel fowerful but they have weaknesses that make them distinct and situational. The enemy ai was fun to fight against and now i wish i could try the multiplayer but it's probably dead. On to Wolfenstein 2009
unlabelledView post →Return To Castle Wolfenstein would make a rad movie, especially if you hadn't heard of the game. You think it's just a generic WWII film, yawn, then bam. Undead Saxon knights, the defiled church, Olaric, the X-labs, protosoldats, the lopers (the goddamn lopers), ubersoldats, Heinrich 1. What a ride!
unlabelledView post →Classic FPS. The very first PC game I purchased back when it came out. Still love it though and I would imagine the younger peeps not enjoying it as it is pretty old. The story is cool and the pace is fast. It's a boomer shooter for sure.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Return to Castle Wolfenstein remains one of the most memorable FPS games of its era. Its blend of World War II action, bizarre Nazi experiments, and occult horror gives it a unique identity that still stands out today. The campaign is consistently engaging, with varied level design, memorable weapons, and a great sense of atmosphere that shifts between tense infiltration, horror, and all-out firefights. That said, its age definitely shows. The enemy AI can be inconsistent, stealth sections are…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best games i have ever played. Ignore the playtime, because i never played it here on steam. Completed it countless of times and its truly a masterpiece.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Return to Castle Wolfenstein is a very good fps with mostly enjoyable levels that range from bog standard WW2 city battles to GoldenEYE-esque infiltration missions, to some pretty awful catacombs, to disturbing science labs, to of course... Castle Wolfenstein. The variety in locations, and the vibe of each of them - cold science lab, ornate chateau and cozy village and even the spooky hallowed grounds - really helped keep the game interesting and engaging. The story is fun, taking itself…
