Resident Evil 2 is a 1998 survival horror game developed and published by Capcom for the PlayStation. The player controls rookie cop Leon S. What people are saying
Mostly positive, but DRM and missing features draw sharp criticism.
Many players celebrate the original Resident Evil 2 as a timeless masterpiece, praising its atmosphere, story, and the superior A/B route system over the remake. Some call it their favorite game ever, with one reviewer saying it's "the best game ever made for me." [4][16][10]
However, a significant number of negative reactions focus on the Steam port's inclusion of Enigma Protector DRM, which breaks Steam Deck compatibility, disables the Steam overlay, and prevents modding. Some players advise buying the GOG version instead, calling the DRM "malware" and noting that saves disappear when offline. [31][32][33][35]

Now that that's out of the way: This version of RE2 has a lot of the improvements from the GOG release, adds unnecessary DRM, and doesn't work at all on Steam Deck. This mirrors the exact same issues that DC1 and DC2 had when they came to Steam, and it's been a month since those came out so I doubt Capcom would ever fix those issues here. Windowed mode is broken, no steam overlay, no achievements, minor graphical issues, and more. These issues…

And that night, Raccoon City was wiped out, thanks to the bioweapons created by Umbrella. Somehow, I made it out. But too many others...weren't so lucky. I was "asked" later to join a top-secret government program. Not that I had a choice. The training, the punishing missions...nearly killed me, but at least they kept my mind off everything. If I could just forget what happened that night - the pain, even for a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good Job Capcom now Bring Classic Resident Evil (Code Veronica, Outbreak 1,2 and Dead Aim) games too to Steam as well. Just Do It.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was working at Pizza Hut when this title was released and I used my very first paycheck to buy a PS1 along with RE2. I had nowhere near enough money to pay for everything so my mom spotted me the difference. I spent many hours of my youth playing this game and it still holds a very special place in my heart. I remember marveling over how great the graphics looked back then. Well, the game doesn't look as awesome as it did in 1998 but that's okay because I don't either. Things get old and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not only does Enigma Protector look like really terrible 90's era malware with obvious translation issues but it throws an error when trying to use Proton. Save yourself the time and money on these games, just buy them on GOG where there is no malware like DRM to break things for you.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unfortunately, I'll never be able to fully explain how special this game is to me because words simply can't describe it. OG Resident Evil 2 isn't just my favorite in the series, it's also the best game ever made for me. This was Hideki Kamiya's first game as director. His excitement and passion were perfectly captured in the play. The storytelling, impeccable atmosphere, magnificent creature designs, perfect puzzles, peaceful sountracks and most importantly voice acting. Everyone is perfect…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly thought it was a late April Fools joke when I saw RE1, 2 and 3 Nemesis OG's, but they just straight up shadow dropped them like Dino Crisis 1 and 2. Super cool to officially have them on Steam, they seem to run fine, so looking forward to get into them and hearing those beautiful OG save room themes 🙏
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →- it has enigma - no steam overlay - no steam deck compatibility - no steam cloud - my steam controller doesn’t work (it does with the gog version)
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is more a review of this specific port than the game itself. Resident Evil 2 is an incredible game and I genuinely love it. However, I cannot recommend this port, instead I'd urge you to pick the GOG port instead if you want to play it on PC. This port is mostly the same as the GOG support but with two crucial differences that ruin the experience for the Steam version: 1. GOG is DRM-free while Steam has Enygma DRM - The Enygma DRM was broken for Linux users and required workarounds…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this hurts me to do but im going to leave a negative review for the DRM in short great game good port ruined by capcom DRM so why i dont like the DRM is because when you go offline saves dissapear so you always have to be online for a singleplayer 20 year old game this bothers me because there are no achievements or any online functionality like no RENET or any leaderboards so its stupid to not be able to play this offline i have also had a few crashes once i tried to save and it crashed,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Certified banger!! I will buy this game wherever it exists, every time. Much like the GOG verison Xinput controllers don't work. Here is the fix: Go to game folder: steamapps\common\4249110_Biohazard2\english Delete the dinput.dll all done.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am glad GOG managed to get it on Steam! I will award them the highest honor i can bestow. (buying the game on GOG). 10/10 Classic
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Capcom is adding DRM Enigma Protector to their back catalog of games. Prevents modding, cheat engine, and reduces performance by up to 10-15 fps with stutters. (Also Capcom being hostile to Valve's testing of their games for the Steam Deck makes them major ♥♥♥♥ heads while I'm at it) Go eff yourself, Capcom. I will not be buying future Biohazard titles due to you wanting to install Malware (hello…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This one and Code Veronica are the best of the original games. I used to sit down and beat Leon A in one sitting when I was a kid because I didn't have a memory card. It is PEAK PLEASE GIVE US ACHIEVEMENTS
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If the RE2 remake is a sleek reimagining, the original is the pure, unfiltered blueprint. It may show its age in places, but what made it special was never tied to its moment. It's still, plain and simple, a great game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Replayed for the first time in ~15 years and honestly, I understand now why people still talk about the original. The biggest surprise wasn't nostalgia. It was how much Capcom changed in the remake. Same setting, same characters, same lore, but they feel like two completely different games. What I liked most in the original is the story and character interactions. Ada is much more involved in the plot, Birkin family gets more screen time, and Claire, Leon, Sherry and Annette feel connected…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →All thanks to GOG and Capcom for bringing this masterpiece after so many years, it's not the best version but the more the classics become available the merrier.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Does not run at all on steam deck without tinkering with protontricks and wine settings, and even then still without working fmv cutscenes, and even then with saves not being loadable for no reason . Better off emulating the psx version or getting the gog version running if you're playing on deck
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →To all playing the game Press F9 to exit game. You're welcome. Best game in the series for me. Only thing missing is Steam achievements. Bring Code Veronica also please!!!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Re2 is an absolute masterpiece. It is a must buy for 5 bucks if you love the franchise or haven't played the game yet. The only flaws are the difficulty being too easy, and there are still no achievements on Steam. We want to be able to grind these games and earn all achievements! Also, Capcom, please put Clock Tower and Haunting Ground on steam!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The launcher window being titled "4249110_Launcher" should tell you enough - it's a hastily done job, copying GOG version with minimum alteration. You don't gain any usual benefits from Steam version, not even Steam overlay was implemented - which means you miss out on being able to access notes, screenshots, video recording, and even Big Picture overlay. So you can't even exit the game if you're on controller, you need a keyboard ready for ALT+F4 termination. The only benefit is being able to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a great game, although my PC has a hard time handling such stunning and powerful graphics
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Had to uninstall after one playthrough because Enigma DRM's background processes were making my browser tabs crash. This is a great game but if you have a weak PC I can't recommend this version of it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →the initial excitement of getting these games on steam wore off pretty quickly once i realised these are strangely worse versions compared to what you can get on GOG. alt+tabbing is borked, d-pad doesn't work (unless you fiddle around with steam input), you don't get cloud saves weirdly enough, and of course, the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ enigma drm being added to this... ps1 game? it would still be bad if it was in a more modern title like what happened to the re4 remake a couple of weeks back but the fact that…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Why add DRM when the game is 30 years old and is still being sold on GOG DRM free? Also, where the hell are the subtitles Capcom? Because they don't exist but are listed in the description as being “improved”. Last time I checked this game never had subtitles.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As good of a remake RE2 had this version has proper A and B routes When you play the B route you see what the A route character did during that scenario instead of just a slightly different path which is probably the only thing RE2r was missing, but at least Claire is still a baddie
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can't in good conscience recommend this release of the game so long as it has Enigma slapped on it, on top of that it doesn't even launch 90% of the time and the 10% of the time it does, it just crashes. By now there are plenty of superior ways you can enjoy this masterpiece, this miserable cash grab of a release is not one of them.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →game is obviously fantastic...is re2 original...incredible..especially with hd mods...but the steam version is GARBAGE since they put in Enigma DRM...simply buy the GoG version from their site without any DRM. Better 100%.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Adding Enigma DRM makes this an interesting take on the zapping system. As in, it zapped any drive I had to buy this. Refunded. Capcom, if you're going to insist on shooting yourself in the foot, then I suggest you stop being cowards and aim elsewhere.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is personally for me games like Donkey Kong Country, Ocarina of Time, Mario 3. in other words, the best games I've ever played. I recommend it to everyone.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Finally the OG trilogy is on Steam, even though you can buy them on GOG its still great to have them on steam, they run well, graphics still look good for a 20+ year old game and the iconic cheesy VA's are great. ADD CODE VERONICA ONTO STEAM CAPCOM Only complaints is no achievements and the addition of DRM
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Regarding the game itself - don't get me wrong, the title is great. The very beginnings of Leon Kennedy and Redfield Family, a rather intriguing story and a lot of replayability value both in the original version of the game and in Remake. Regarding the port itself? Boy, it's a tricky question. I already reviewed Resident Evil 3: Nemesis from the classical trilogy. Everything is as bad even here. The release of the classic games is a great surprise, and I do think that it is a great way to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I remember playing this game on PlayStation 1 as a kid and having to close my eyes whenever they showed a picture of a zombie from the first game. I was that scared. A friend of mine brought a floppy disk with a playthrough tutorial, and we played it together so it wasn’t as scary. 10/10 memories.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Please remove the crappy Enigma DRM which prevents me from playing this on the Deck. >:( Also no achievements or cloud saves for a 2026 release, wtf Capcom?!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a really good game, and I highly recommend it to newer fans of the series like myself who started with the remakes, especially because the A/B scenario is much more substantial here However capcom have been really stupid here by adding DRM on top of that there's no inherent steam functionality, screenshots and overlay do not work, there is functionally no reason to buy this over the GOG port
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is my childhood and my first survival horror Still peak even to this day Claire really became one of my fav chars and I even got her action figure I really love this game to death and REmake 2 did it justice Love the classic aesthetic plus the constant feel of dread The hand drawn backgrounds and camera angles are a whole vibe Yeah the janky controls can feel dated but it has its charm 10/10 Will always be my fav
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Reasons to not recommend this port: 1) it's the GOG version without any good additions and has a DRM for absolutely no reason. Anyone out there can pirate multiple versions of the game without a problem, or even buy the GOG version that has no DRM. WHY DID CAPCOM PUT DRM IN THIS?! 2) Some annoying bugs: F9 shows the reset screen for a split second and dissappears, so I have to hold it and that more often than not closes the game entirely. Aiminig downwards sometimes makes the character spin in…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →DRM, no direct support for Steam Deck, no cloud sync. No effort was put in this release, just buy the trilogy from GOG, at least it's DRM-free
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →They should add achievements to this game and the other og resident evils. Also there is giant spiders in this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the greatest games ever but remove that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ DRM man. Are you stupid Capcom?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wow... Never thought I'd have my wish granted yet have the monkey's paw curl. One, this version of the game doesn't have auto aim (Not in Original mode) for who knows what reason when the game is intended to have it as an option. Two. DRM. Think you can run this on a dinky laptop easy peasy? Probably not. And three, and I don't know if I'm crazy or not, but Birkins first fight in Scenario A seems to have a smaller hitbox than what it seems. Learned that out the hard way. Just get the GOG…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So happy that i can play OG RE2 on Steam as well !! I know i am not the majority but i love the OG RE2 much more than the remake. Those who have never played the PS1 RE games ae missing a lot .. Please give them a try and the price is cheap for such an amazing game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An upgrade to RE1 on every level possible, it was pretty good. In comparison to RE2R, there are of course some parts that haven't aged well (puzzles are too simple, bosses are worse, Mr X of this game is just kind of there and not as menacing) but it does some things better than the remake. The route system is much better in this one; items you pick up effect the other route directly and it was nice to see how Leon and Claire's stories interject with each other. Thanks to fixed camera I also…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Negatives: No Steam Overlay. No Steam Deck support. No cloud saves. No native "quit game" option. Default controls might be horrible and need to be reassigned. No native controller support, it seems. DRM implementation for absolutely no reason other than they hate you. A horrible launcher with features that should've been implemented into the game itself. No Achievements. Asks for weird Registry Rights when first launching the game. Positive: Looks fantastic in 4K resolution. Everything loads…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game itself is fantastic and I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of survival horror. It's a bit dated but still holds up pretty well and a must-play for any Resident Evil fan, new and old. However, I cannot recommend this particular release. It's riddled with bugs and has DRM for some odd reason. I highly highly recommend getting the GOG version with the REbirth patch, it's substantially better than what you'll experience here.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →an incredible game with ♥♥♥♥♥♥ DRM attached to it for no reason. get rid of it
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Resident Evil 2 is such an awesome sequel, I was hooked until the very end. I wasn't at all familiar with this game's story, so I was curious how RE2 would feel compared to RE1's setting, given that the majority of that game took place in a single (albeit restricted) mansion. This game feels a bit less like uncovering a mystery, and more so like dealing with the aftermath- and going on an adventure. I initially found this game felt much more difficult than the first, but after getting some…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →just finished leon scenario a im about to start claire scenario b im aboslutely loving this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →great game but i found the scene where Leon says "I guess you picked the Wong side!" before throwing Ada over the railing to her death was in bad taste
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Resident Evil 2 is still one of my favorites of all time. [To play this game as well on Linux proton/Steamdeck you need to add the Registry just like Dino crisis] if you are getting the "Registry" error from the launcher don't worry there's a fix for this, Before going into the details, open your game folder "SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/4249110_Biohazard2" from there pick any language for example "re2_english.reg", open the file with Kate or any text editor, on the Save Path add "Save…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Classic resident evil gameplay with the OG Leon. You have to play this before the remake. It will blow your mind to see the enormous progress in 20 years. The OG characters are more stylized, less realistic than the remake. Claire is cuter, Ada is more femme fatale. Leon is more.. rookie cop. Also the credit songs are better than the remake's. All in all, there's still good reason to play the OG RE2, if you can handle the ancient graphics and tank controls. TIP: use a controller. that's what…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm really late to Leon's party, but I have to say, RE2 is truly an amazing sequel. It improves on pretty much everything from the first game: the movement and shooting feel noticeably better, the map was much easier to memorize, and overall, I just had a significantly better experience. Plus, having more bindable keys right out of the box (sprinting with shift!) is absolute perfection. However, just like in the RE1 port, the Steam overlay isn't working. I really wish they had put a little…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game was an amazing sequel to the original RE, which I can't help to appreciate that more than the Remake.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Only reason I'm leaving a negative review is because setting up a controller to work right is difficult. Sometimes when I load up the game to the main menu the dpad will allow me to move down but not back up. IDK what causes it but it's just a bad port due to clunkiness of getting it to work properly. Game is great though if you can get past dealing with tank controls which have not aged well in my opinion.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolute gem of a classic. I use to get anxiety working myself to boot this up on my PS1. Then I'd lose myself in the world of RE and Racoon City. This was peek RE for me way back. Still is (maybe just nostaglia). It might have the old tank controls but still goes toe-to-toe with the remake of it. And for how old it is, that's impressive. Such a masterpiece. If you haven't experiences the OG RE2. Do it. It's $4. No reason not to!

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Alright I'm going to make this as clear as possible. IGNORE all of these negative reviews, seriously... 100% of them are lies and herding/bandwagon hopping. I spent at least 30 minutes scrolling through every negative review of this game, and then proceeded to purchase and play it, just for the sake of owning this great collection, and debunking the BS, because I am very tired of all these little snowflakes whining and review bombing things just because they are bored. Liars and propoganda…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is one hell of a time, while remake WAS my first experience with RE2 i much prefer the original, maybe it's the feeling of old games or such positives like sound design and the attention on atmosphere and such, but This game IS one of the best RE's and possibly the best survivor horror game ever made, thanks to capcom for putting it on steam,(with DRM is pretty annoying but it's an old game). I just wish Konami would do the same thing to og silent hill's
