DO NOT BUY RE1 FROM STEAM, BUY IT FROM GOG. Now that that's out of the way: This version of RE1 has a lot of the improvements from the GOG release, adds unnecessary DRM, and doesn't work at all on Steam Deck. This mirrors the exact same issues that DC1 and DC2 had when they came to Steam, and it's been over a month since those came out so I doubt Capcom would ever fix those issues here. Windowed mode is broken, no steam overlay, no achievements, minor graphical issues, and more. These issues…

Capcom is adding DRM Enigma Protector to their back catalog of games. Prevents modding, cheat engine, and reduces performance by up to 10-15 fps with stutters. (Also Capcom being hostile to Valve's testing of their games for the Steam Deck makes them major ♥♥♥♥ heads while I'm at it) Go eff yourself, Capcom. I will not be buying future Biohazard titles due to you wanting to install Malware (hello…

Great game but... It really doesn't need DRM. What it needs it's achievements, trading cards, and the steam overlay to actually open when you launch the game. Right now it feels like you just added the GOG version to your library.

Genuinely really good even after all this time. Get rid of the DRM Capcom, this game has been emulated to death and I literally only bought it here because I wanted to have it in my library, which I coulda done with GOG or some other service anyway.

Friends, I have bought and played and beat this game more times than I think anyone has bought and played and beat a game. 1996: I got it as an 8th grade graduation present from Funcoland in Danbury, CT (next to the mall). Spent the entire Summer of 1996 beating this game twice with Jill, twice with Chris, 4 ending variations in both playthroughs plus the extra outfits, which led to all 8 possible endings (alone, with either one of the supporting characters, and with all 3 alive). I was so…

Update: Follow this guide to get the game running on SteamOS/Linux: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3697492100 So! This release is not great. For me, I own it and the other two classic RE games just to own them on Steam. If that's what you want, stop reading this review and just buy them for the library entries. But for a game to actually play? You're in for a bit of a mess without installing mods - and by installing mods, I mean deleting everything Steam downloads and…

Negatives: No Steam Overlay. No Steam Deck support. No cloud saves. No native "quit game" option. Default controls might be horrible and need to be reassigned. No native controller support, it seems. DRM implementation for absolutely no reason other than they hate you. A horrible launcher with features that should've been implemented into the game itself. No Achievements. Asks for weird Registry Rights when first launching the game. Positive: Looks fantastic in 4K resolution. Everything loads…

For many years, I was told that the remake was better and that it improved upon the original in every way. This is not true. Resident Evil 1 feels more eerie. The mansion is uncanny: its corridors are longer, the spaces are liminal, it's rawer, less detailed and unsettling. The game is more silent. The silence allows for more introspection. No crimson heads. Exploring the mansion becomes a more relaxing and less annoying experience. The game has less bloat and is therefore…

"Give us a couple of bucks, and we'll give you a 30 year old game that's bundled with some ♥♥♥♥ ass DRM. And no, we will not include Steam Deck support, Steam achievements, or cloud saves. How's that sound?" Well Capcom, that sounds about as good as the Mansion Basement theme from the Resident Evil Director's Cut OST.

    1) DRM for absolutely no reason, while being the GOG version. 2) It's the most barebones edition of the game, it has none of the content from Director's Cut Edition or the NDS edition. Go buy the GOG version instead.

After so many years, Capcom decided to randomly shadow drop the original PS1 trilogy on steam. I own all of these games physically on ps1 and play them at least annually since I very heavily enjoy them. I have played both the original release and Director's cut extensively, So I was very excited to finally have a digital version of these games as well. For this review, I did both a complete Jill and Chris run. Unfortunately, I do think this port is rather underbaked in several ways. Firstly,…

I love Resident Evil 1, 2 & 3 So buying these 3 games on Steam was a no-brainer for me because I like flexing my playtime. What you get here is the GOG versions of the games which is a pretty passable way to experience them. Including texture filtering, Anti Aliasing, variable resolutions etc. And it ran for me pretty well out of the box. The same cannot be said for some other people: Some people struggled to get the game running on Linux because the game makes registry changes in the…

It's crazy how well this game holds up today. I personally think, after remapping my buttons, this game is substantially easier to control on the pc than the remake, and because you can SKIP THE DOOR SCENES, it honestly feels so much smoother than the remake at times. I couldn't have asked for a better ported version!

It can feel clunky and slow, but it is also tense, frightening, and far from outdated. More than just the start of a legendary series, it still feels like the foundation for everything that followed. Even in 2026, RE1 still stands on its own for a reason.

This is where it all started. Everyone knows the 2002 remake did it best, but I still think this game is great and worth buying if you’ve never played it or if you just love the franchise like I do. The biggest flaw for me is there are still no achievements. I want to earn them all! Also, Capcom, please put Clock Tower and Haunting Ground on Steam!

Still worth playing along with OG 2,3 (Especially 3!) and RE1R simply by it's existence, along with the characters and gameplay basis. I'm flattered it finally made it to Steam. And remember..... Resident Evil deserves better for its 30th anniversary. - No core Steam functionality (can't even Shift+Tab for overlay, can't stream the game) - No achievements - No Steam Deck support - DRM - No Cloud support Also worse audio than the original release, although that's simply the nature of the PC port. I know this is echoing a common sentiment, but these releases really are pitiful. It's not necessary to repeat how asinine it is to enforce DRM on a 30-year-old title that, due to the quality…

Consider that this game came out in 1996! It used to terrify me when I was a kid. 7 years old meeting The Keeper for the first time.. I dropped that controller and ran away.. Jill died as she stood still in raw, dumbfounded, childish terror. I don't think my parent's knew what this game was until it was too late. 10/10 I love this game.

Had to leave the config page open to leave this review as the reg file system prevents the game from launching as it just throws up errors every time. Also; why add DRM when the game is 30 years old and is still being sold on GOG DRM free? Game only works by tinkering with the reg files to manually verify them, and inputting a DLL Override launch command.

Yes, it has cheesy B-movie dialogue and charming cutscenes with real actors. And I love ALL of it. This is Resident Evil to me in its perfection. Resident Evil (1996) is one of the most important survival horror games ever made. It basically helped define the genre and set the standard for tension, exploration, and resource management in games. The atmosphere is easily the strongest part. The Spencer Mansion feels creepy, isolated, and full of mystery. Every hallway and room adds to the feeling that something could go wrong at any moment. The gameplay is slow and methodical, which actually works in its favor. Limited ammo, tight…
