60 of 96 · most liked firsttl;dr version: if you like trains, steam, horn sounds and the spirit of exploration, don't hesitate to spend your 5 bucks on this and give it a try. Ooooh my, i used to spend hours and hours in this game back in the day, just meditating at all those toy trains doing their job from A to B, back and forth. For its price on steam now, i guess it's worth the money and you could give it a try. Yes, this game could've been deeper into the economics and route planning, the controls and menus could've…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game idea but written with a bunch of DLLs that date back many years. Causes very frustrating lock-ups every few minutes. Would be wonderful if somebody re-compiled it with later OSs and Direct X versions in mind.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is not easy but it is fun. You'll start off maybe restarting your missions a couple of times to find the right paths, You have to hire Prospectors, Trappers and even gunslingers to clear the way ahead. Th engines are realistic, as is rate of travel and carryng capacity. You'll have to be careful to keep a reserve for repairs too. I played this game to death 10 years ago. They fixed the bugs I remember, it plays fine on WIN 7, and just plug your IPod or phone in to play music and turn off the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's an alright game. A bit basic take on TTD and one that feels sorta dated in comparison if only because of its 3d graphics. Overall it's worth 5 dollars or less, I got about that much out of the game; If you like games like TTD, go for it, but don't really expect anything much. If you're looking for an era based Railroad game or one with some depth, try Railroad tycoon 2 on here or download Open TTD.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not a good game, but not horrible either. If you want slow and easy going this is the game for you. PRO: Easy to make profits once you figure out what needs to get where. CON: Very Bad tutorial. In fact, the game is clear in What you have to do, but gives you NO clue how to do it. I truly tried to give this game a chance... and it failed. Sorry Railroad Pioneer, but you get 2/5. And that's generous.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game freezes and crashes once you connect your railroad to a rival. Irritating to say the least... I was really enjoying this game until it became unplayable to this bug. When I did a little reading to find if there was a patch I found that steam, and the developer have known about this problem for years. Do not waste your money on this until they have the game playable at least!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like the strategy and layout of this game, but even on a machine with multiple cores, plenty of RAM and a good graphics card, it consumes way too many resources, freezing more than it allows active play. That's a shame.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has too many bugs. Most of all, the game is always stopped when the railway getting complex. I cannot play this game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played this game years but my disk broke. When i saw that steam released it i bought it straight away! its a great game, the only think i would like to have seen is a completley open sandbox mode with no set objectives.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Let me begin by saying that this was a good game. I actually owned the disk version of this game back in 2003, and I am always the sucker for nostalgia. However, there are issues. Since I doubt any of these are going to ever be addressed, I wanted to list them for anyone thinking that they would like to try this game out. First, there is a memory leak problem. At around mission 6, the amount of locomotives and actions being taken by both you and the A.I. will make the game crash constantly.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →worst game i've bought on steam. controls make no sense, tutorial is not helpful. i only paid $4 for it, and it isn't even worth that. this game is worse than a nickelback concert.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Same problem as the old cd version. The moment you connect rails with your opponent the game freezes and you can't continue the missions. Pls valve fix the memory leak and optimise the game a bit.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The addition of exploration to this game adds a great facet to an already great train sim. Fans of the Railroad Tycoon series will love this!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played this with windows 8 with no problems. Now, running windows 10 it glitches so bad you can't finish scenarios. Refuses to let you set up routes and more. If you run windows 10 I would not recommend it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wow....I bought this game for like 3 bucks just to see how crap it was going to be and it was actually pretty good. Still I would not recommend this too any one unless they like old games and trains.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You might as well buy the disc copy by Sold Out Software which does not need steam. The steam verison is not stable and crashes alot... and I mean alot. I only played 3 mins of the steam verison and I crashed 3 times!!! I refunded it and gonna stick with my disc copy, its more stable.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ugh. Buggy interface. Game has potential, but it has several kinks to iron out.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted to build a railroad, that is the reason I purchased this. After a few hours of trying to figure out how to make things work, I am saying no. From now on, I'll just bite the bullet and invest in a decent game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Another cash grab by steam. Doesn't run on windows 7, vista or any of the other platforms available today. Tried the off site patches but they are designed for a disk. Don't waste even .25 cents on it. Too bad, would have liked to play it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →not bad a little more realistic railroader game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is like a cross between Railroad Tycoon 2 and Civilization. Initially most of the map is blacked out and you need to send out a troop of pioneers to explore the land (as in Civilization). The problem is that every time you find something you lose a member of your troop, find a resource - lose a prospector, find some wild animals - lose a trapper, etc. Every time you lose a member you have to go back and get another one to replace them which very quickly turns into a grind. It also…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →DONT BUY !!!! the save game bugged so i am unable to complete mission 6 :(
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →worrest game ever, i hope they dont make a part two. i rather play snoopy vs redbarron, and the grapics are wores then nuke simulater 2001. dont waste your money. i paid 99 cents and thats to munch.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A ok game. Just have caution to save games cause sometimes game wont load your saved game and just give u a exception and this problem its not uncommun. =S Campaing could be a little longer and videos between missions have some audio issues. They have a good game in hands with a litlle more effort this could be a good game, but for now buy it only if u really are in the mood to play a train game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →first no on stem the idea is good but fails in game ai and engine mouse key controle seams vage uncleara chugs along leabving me frustrated well needs a major overhaul or scrap it n stsrt again oh no nothin likr sidmayers railroads wich u be better off with so leave it hateing it eager to try sid mayers railroads theres plenty of alternative train games a shame bit of a let down pitty pitty
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hum... This is a business simulation involving, obviously, trains. The graphics are old but still decent. The music is OK. The story is simple but also OK. Some little bugs. No crashes. Runs fine on win 7. Overall, is not a casual game. This is old-school gaming, which means a bunch of poorly explained things, an incomplete tutorial, and a long manual to read and consult often. As with most old games like this, there's often only one way to solve things and, until you get that, you´ll be…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is not as good as railroad tycoon 2. looks like a good game and has promise, but cant get out of tutorial due to controls and crashes in program. tip 10 in the tutorial asks to set up an automated trade route between new york and the corn farm. i never found a button to confirm an automated train route between the two stations, and in searching the game stops working. Any suggestions on what im doing wrong if anything?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love this game so addictive for me once u know all the basics :) Yeh I know about the crashes on the campaign so I usually play Single Missions which could last for hours of fun :) I look forward for a RAILROAD PIONEER 2 hopefully :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This has to be the worst menu driven hell ever!.. Cant even get to your trains most of the time because of the constant popup menu's NO this game is NO good! dont like. the maker should give me a refund just for all the frustration endured in this Argh Game! I want it off my purchase list i hate it so much! and yes it is deleted.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Terrible game. Just don't waste your money.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →kicks me out of game to steam every 30 seconds. doesn't work
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →CRASH 4 INFINITY!!! All is does is CRASH CRASH CRASH WORTHLESS WASTE OF MY TIME!!!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is pretty old and aged terribly. No QoL whatsoever, micromanagement of everything without clear vision for your assets. basically you will have to control every train manually if you want it to be profitable, strange way to add train route where you have to add extra hop for it to work (A-B-A instead of A-B to make this train run between 2 stations), issues with servicing (you click to service train on next stop but it still goes without servicing and drops cargo). overall it is too…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played the game in my childhood, so may be it affects my assessment. =) Pluses: + Easy-breezy gameplay for relaxation: bots are too stupid: low-detail economy system, when everything always brings you income. + Cool stylized train models, each has its unique look and description and history. + Necessity to explore lands before building railroad + Railroad placement affects its cost and train speed(hill/plain, sands/grass/swamps, etc) + Simple production chains Minuses (which will make you…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It will not work for me I double click on the icon and nothing happens it states its running but that's it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game starts out well, but after some hours it becomes sluggish and eventually crashes. Such a pity, the game has some very nice concepts not often seem in these kind of sims (like fog of war).
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Classic train management sim, very fun campaign that spans the story of the transcontinental railroad. The graphics have held up well over the years, the only caveat being that the wheels on the trains and cars don't spin. There is a multiplayer, and this too can be quite fun even this very day to play with friends; though you will likely need something like Logmein to use it. The game mechanics are fairly easy to manipulate once a player knows what to do to, but can be punishing for those…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It looked like it could have been a fun game, but.. I only get sound fx on the right side of my headset. Oddly, the music is on both sides. I have no desire to play this game in silence. And no, I don't use speakers. Another game off to my junk folder, never to be touched again....
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Crap. Clunky tutorial is a pain in the backside to try to get past and the game isn't interesting enough to. Once you've seem the choo choo go once, you're done. No sandbox mode, just bad missions.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Game it self is great. But it freezers all the time making it impossiable to play. It's a shame really. Only if the developers put more time into it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I found the setting up of routes and track laying quite frustrating. It takes all the fun out of the game. The Railroad Tycoon games are so much better.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game begins crashing and freezing after mission 4 as the others stated - nice for a few hours but then the fun ends quickly :(
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game give a good feel for railroad building and commerce and can be very challenging. The bad part is that there is no auto save so if something happens while playing, you have to start over.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I only gave this game a positive rating because of nostalgia, and being one of the first games I ever played as a kid. Honestly, I can't really recommend playing it now. I'm not saying Railroad Pioneer is a bad game - I really enjoyed it, and it runs pretty well despite it's age. However, this game is roughly-made: lacks basic polishing, has quite a lot of oversights and a barely functioning AI. I can only recommend RP to those want to play an older lesser-known railroad simulation game, and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The best thing about this game is that it doesn't take too much of your time. You realize how bad it is really soon, and move on to something else.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tags: Tycoon&Simulator&Sim&City Additional Tags: Delete Local Content & Remove from Library TLDR: Antiquated simulation game about laying tracks, coordinating train traffick, and making a profit over the competition. User interface is fairly daunting, from yesteryear, with a lot of needless buttons for things we have modern conventions and have since streamlined. Audiovisual quality is dated and the overall tone of the game is monotone. No support for modern resolutions. Removed for declutter
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun, but buggy. After playing a few hours, I found a bug that prevents you from making any more moves.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Only buy this one if you used to play it and want some nostalgia, otherwise look elsewhere like sid meier's railroads for a better experience.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is fun in all respects. If you love train sims, building trains, building up the train stations, and all the economics of such game play... then this is the game for you. Kinda. First it's old and could use an HD update, second the mechanics are rather confussing at times, third... well the game just doesnt allow you to do high end train routes. For what its worth, they give you a fun wild west pioneer themed game, just make sure you get it on a deal. Not worth more than $5. P.S.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I do not know why some of the comments are negative about this amazing game, if their issues are about managing everything to the micro and the age of the game, well, the game is aged but, still it has the features and attributes to fill the essential requirements of a railroad tycoon game, from auto trading routs to auto managements, even for train maintenance, after a couple to dozens of trips of the train, the research building allows you to update the train more than once which will allow…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is an old 2003 business tycoon simulator with some resource management and track/pathing gameplay. Run a business building and operating railroads in 19th century USA. It's a viable premise for a game, but this has aged badly. There's no proper widescreen or HD support, so this falls below acceptable standard for a modern PC game. The $5 USD price tag for this is just nostalgia gouging.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Seems to be alright at start but game seems too lose track of when to end scenario and advance to next. You end up waiting for something to happen that stimulates program to advance you.some what fun and a challenge but old school and dorky.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well, it sure reminds me of good old days when games had a tutorial! That said, the written text and the verbal instructions don't line so it is a bit confusing. Just started playing and it seems to run OK and is logical. The pioneer teams and territory 'clearing' aspect adds an interesting dimension. Ill update if it catches and keeps my attention and I play some more hours. I got it for $1 so what is there to lose?
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pave the map in track and wait for something to happen. Ridiculously resource intensive considering what it it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game won't launch on Windows 8 no matter what I do.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Boring game. Alos, not clear how to autmate the game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has some unique and cool mechanics wich haven't been seen ever in other games of the genre , however the graphics are a bit dated , even for 2003 standards and it can also crash sometimes . The game also suffers from a lack of content , besides the campaign mode there's little else to do in the game . Nevertheless it is a fun game , even if it could have been alot better . Final score : 6.5 / 10 ( OK ) Full video review : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHSVUeluGnY
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great suprise. More complex than railroads! but still easy to learn. I love it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good game for the price am looking for old school games to kill time and found myself hook on this one recommended.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Although the idea and game are nice, it's difficult to enjoy the game due to its age and micromanagement issues there is too many moving parts in the game you have to control manually its a micromanagement hell
