unlabelledView post →Just saw the film “Papillon,”the eponymously titled film based on the life of Henri Charrière who spent 14 years (1931-1945) in Bagne de Cayenne, a French penal colony in French Guiana. As I watch it, I’m reminded that gulags like CECOT aren’t new. May every man sent there unjustly be freed. 🦋

Schaffner, on his 106th birthday, on the set of PLANET OF THE APES (1968), PATTON (1970), PAPILLON (1973) & THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL (1978). He was #BOTD on 5/30/1920 and passed away at 69 on 7/2/1989.
unlabelledView post →I read Papillon in early HS I think. It's way more brutal & "adult" than the '73 movie. Advice: don't read any reviews or toxic "comment sections" about the book, just take a deep breath & dive in. 👍💯

unlabelledView post →Papillon. There are a lot of interesting stories in the book that didn’t make it into the movie but at the same time it wanders a lot. The movie tells a tighter story.

unlabelledView post →#NowPlaying Papillon (1973) and thinking about it sideways, less as an escape movie and more as a parable of how colonial carceral systems operate in the Americas. Exile, extraction, discipline, and a delusional fantasy that suffering at the periphery keeps order at the centre. Still true! #FilmSky
