unlabelledView post →I Watched: Capernaum (2018) A Lebanese film about a child who sues his parents for causing him to be born because life is terrible, mostly set in the extremely poor slums and shantytowns of Beirut. Very acclaimed but I agree with one critic who called it a "sadness pile." #Filmsky 📽️
unlabelledView post →I've never seen Capernaum, it does sound intriguing. Monster I watched a few months ago and it was not an easy film to watch. I will add this film to the list. The director secretly filmed, while banned from filmmaking in Iran.
unlabelledView post →The critic obviously didn't get the film then. Capernaum is about anger, hope, exploitation, resilience but not misery. As someone who loathes fake pathos and the maudlin I would be sensitive to that kind of failure. But personally thought it was phenomenal - a neo-Dickensian epic. ***** #Filmsky

unlabelledView post →Painful to have to revise the introduction to my lecture-seminar on Lebanese filmmaker Nadine Labaki's wonderful CAPERNAUM (2018). It can no longer be said to be set in 'contemporary' Beirut, even if the film's lessons about legacies of conflict and trauma are all too contemporary and relevant. 1/2

I’ve have Capernaum sat on my ‘To watch’ pile for about 3 years. I do love proper ‘cinema’ but my heart truly beats for genre films and always will.

He has to use his wits and guile, his charm and his youth to scrape a living after he ran away from his parents. He did this because they gave his beloved eleven-year-old sister to be married! He lucks out a little in that he quickly encounters “Rahil” (Yordanos Shiferaw) who is herself a refugee from Ethiopia and who needs some help looking after her…

I know this is a classic trope (even in #Anime), but WHY is Atticus constantly eating?!? Looking forward to commenting more on this one as I watch it, particularly one rather poignant and controversial scene. * * * The redemption/reconciliation story arc with Matthew and his parents is absolutely golden. The actors who played Alphaeus and Elisheva just knocked it out of the…

Set in #Lebanon, it is about a 12-year-old boy who has to live by his wits on the streets when his parents fail to care for him and his siblings properly. One of the best films I’ve ever seen. Directed by Nadia Labaki and starring the amazing child actors Zain Al Rafeea and Boluwatife Treasure Bankole. Currently streaming on #SBSonDemand (expiring very soon!)

unlabelledView post →I wouldn't call it entertaining per se, but it's certainly provocative >I saw kids who are so neglected, so abused that there's nothing anymore in their eyes. These children don't laugh, don't cry, and don't play. If you put a toy in front of them, they don't touch it. They are just numb. There's no more childhood in their eyes. After seeing these kids many times, when they started to have a trusting relationship with me, I used to ask them, "are you happy to be alive?" Ninety-nine percent of…
