unlabelledView post →I have seen people comparing Lanterns to True Detective, which I get, but the vibe is more like the Eddie Murphy/Nick Nolte movie 48 Hrs., with a hint of something darker under the mismatched partners’ aggro banter
unlabelledView post →The Vinegar Syndrome Black Friday Sale is live! I'm thrilled to have contribued a commentary track to the late Corey Yuen's WOMEN ON THE RUN--it's a gonzo blast of buddy-film action that re-translates 48 HRS as a fevered bit of gender-flipped Category III grindhouse delirium.

unlabelledView post →This is an incredibly tight heist movie by the director of 48 Hrs. from a script that can’t be more than 75 pages
unlabelledView post →Slightly off topic but I still think about the story of Walter Hill being forced to cut 25 minutes out of “Another 48 Hrs.” one week before its release. I’m not saying it was ever going to be “Citizen Kane” but I bet there’s a better movie on a shelf somewhere at Paramount.
unlabelledView post →The new “Beverly Hills Cop” movie is reminding me that there supposedly exists a completed 2-hour version of “Another 48 Hrs.” that was almost released, and then the studio panicked and cut a half hour out of it a week before release. Someone should restore that while Walter Hill’s still alive.
unlabelledView post →Brion James - 📽️ Crimewave (Sam Raimi, 1986) James (Blade Runner, 48 Hrs.) is such a distinct and memorable character actor and ‘80s heavy. Raimi’s madcap script with the Coen Brothers gives him plenty to play as a Looney Tunes villain complete with high-pitched cartoon voice. He’s still scary.

unlabelledView post →Happy 72nd Birthday to the underappreciated James Remar, intense and intensely gifted character actor, who has made his mark in film, stage, and television, and has had great roles in THE WARRIORS, CRUISING, 48 HRS., DRUGSTORE COWBOY, SEX AND THE CITY, MIAMI VICE, DEXTER, CREEPSHOW, among others.
unlabelledView post →48 Hrs. is such a good movie. I miss action movies that don’t feel like comic books.
unlabelledView post →June '90 was a little weird, a big summer month where it felt like most things except for TOTAL RECALL underperformed. ANOTHER 48 HRS, DICK TRACY, GREMLINS 2 (one of the best films ever made), ROBOCOP 2 and DAYS OF THUNDER which was marketed like it was going to be the biggest movie of the year 1/2
unlabelledView post →Being a huge Eddie Murphy fan, normally I'd go with Axel Foley. Instead I'm picking Reggie Hammond from 48 Hrs. Love that film.
unlabelledView post →Coming from Sticking Place Books: REX VENICE, by Steven E. de Souza (Die Hard, Commando, 48 Hrs.)! 1940. Gambling ships off the California coast. Nazis! Mobsters! Movie stars! Sharp dialogue! Big set-pieces! SPB's series of great scripts Hollywood never made continues!

unlabelledView post →6. Hadn't seen 48 Hrs. since I was in middle school and that ended up being the movie we decided to watch tonight. You can almost pinpoint precisely when in the movie Eddie Murphy transforms into a superstar letterboxd.com/cckirby/film...
unlabelledView post →finished 48 Hrs. it's interesting to see A) Eddie Murphy already reigning into drama shticks in his first big film role *and* something that's not wholly comedic, B) early sprouts of buddy-cop genre in a raucous and sleazy setting (there are *numerous* slurs), and C) restrained Walter Hill-isms

unlabelledView post →If you have never seen 48 Hrs and Trading Places, YOU ARE MISSING OUT. And keep in mind there had never been a buddy cop movie like 48 Hrs before you see it, and it was •enormous• in impact for it being Black/white leads who challenge each other with racial conflicts.

An untested film actor walking into a gritty crime movie with total confidence and screen presence and changing the buddy cop dynamic in the process. Amazing. unlabelledView post →This like the movie 48 Hrs, but in real time and without the acting, the wit, the excitement, etc. #BMovieManiacs
unlabelledView post →Final Thoughts: 48 Hrs. is a decent buddy cop movie. Disheveled detective Nick Nolte takes criminal Eddie Murphy out to break a case. The results should have been comedy gold but who is the comedian here? Nolte's bad cop is far funnier than Murphy, and that's saying something. #hatm

unlabelledView post →The 80s blockbusters (Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, 48 Hrs etc.) that defined the look and feel of moser action cinema were built off 70s exploitation cinema, most of which were a sea of Dirty Harry clones. This movie codified the “action” film.

unlabelledView post →POINT BLANK/ A BOUT PORTANT (2010) No relation to the Lee Marvin flick. This is a tight little Hitchcock-meets-48 HRS thriller. At under 90 minutes long, it actually could have used about 10 more minutes for character development. As it is, a well-plotted popcorn movie. Vive la France!
unlabelledView post →This scene has lost absolutely none of its heat as a stone-cold movie star showcase in the literal decades since 48 HRS. released.
unlabelledView post →People forget that this movie had a pretty iconic director (albeit one well past his prime) -- Walter Hill made The Driver, The Warriors, Streets of Fire, 48 Hrs. He was also a producer on Alien 1-3, and wrote some of them, so he had a long history with Weaver.
unlabelledView post →48 Hrs might be my fave. I’d say it’s perhaps Eddie Murphy’s most underrated movie. He’s made so many since but his debut appearance may be among his best. I remember seeing it when it opened and the audience reaction to the Torchy’s scene. You instantly knew this guy had just changed film history.

unlabelledView post →Just read A Walter Hill Film by @mangiotto.bsky.social published by @mattzollerseitz.bsky.social. Fantastic! An incredible analysis of an under-rated Hollywood auteur. If you only know Walter Hill as the director of 48 Hrs. read this book and then watch Hill’s other movies. You’ll be happy you did.
unlabelledView post →There is a line in the movie 48 Hrs. where Eddie Murphy's in some honky-tonk bar and he says the line, "Never seen so many backwards-ass country fucks in my life," and I think of that line and the utter disdain with which he says it every time I'm reminded of how much of a toilet my state has become
