Outcast is an action-adventure game developed by Appeal and released by Infogrames for Windows in 1999. The game was critically acclaimed and was named the "Adventure Game of the Year" by GameSpot in 1999. In 2001, Appeal developed a sequel, called Outcast II: The Lost Paradise, which was never finished due to bankruptcy. In 2010, Outcast was re-released via digital distribution on GOG. 60 of 191 · most liked firstThis game has accompanied me since I was a little girl, I grew up with it and it grew even further in my imagination, longing for a second part for a very long time. Years have passed and I reinstalled the game again and again, struggling ever more with the latest OS versions to get the game running on my aged CDs. Why should you buy such an old game? It is one of the rare games that gives you that feeling of belonging. It creates a wonderful world where you feel at home, bonding with its…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Outcast 1.1 is a fascinating example of how compelling a game can be outside of the bias of recent "best practices". It's weird! It's funny! It's unexpectedly systemic and challenging in distinct ways!! The fact this still feels groundbreaking over 26 years later is WILD.
unlabelledView post →Skip this one and get Outcast - Second Contact which is improved remake of this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →AVOID! Save your money. The game is riddled with bugs, which is such a shame as it's one of my favourite. However, the biggest problem is the show-stopping bugs that prevent you from continuing with the game. Search in Steam or Google (keywords like "Zine Helidium") and you'll find many including my posts about this. I had to re-play the game from start twice with different areas in the game that stopped me from continuing. The last one is where you can't speak to Zine to get the Helidium, and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game was ahead of its time, one of my biggest nostalgic games from my childhood. The music, the atmosphere, exploring a totaly strange planet, and interacting with aliens were mind-blowing for my 8-year-old self. I had it on the original CD back then, but my parents broke it because they thought it caused me nightmares. haha
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Foreword: The original Outcast is an action-adventure game that has a special place in my heart. At a time when Stargate and Star Trek were a major influence on me, an uncle from Italy brings me a CD with this game on it. In a time where open world games were an exception, Outcast was an extraordinary game. I am glad I got the chance to replay it. Outcast 1.1 is an updated form of the base game. It is optimized to support higher resolutions, some updates to the engine and fixed most…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What a great open world game. A game this old is a gem, and usually, I do not spend over 10 hours on old games, just complete everything and get out. This is an exception. I explored fully and messed around because this game is that good. 10/10 can't believe I never heard of this when I was young.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is great. Hard to belive it was made in 1999. I wasn't played it back then, but even now it looks very progressive in many aspects. It deserves "Test of time" award. Living beautiful world to explore, deep story, lovely soundtrack. I admire this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Old desktop, dry cereal from the packet, saturday morning ritual. Those are the memories that hit me straight away when I think of this game, a game I devoted years to from adolescence to pubescence. Is it good? No. Is it too far beyond good for me to find words for? Yes. I can't tell you why this game was amazing and original and something so unique it has never been replicated. The best I can do is say the experience this game provides is worth more than I can say, buy it, I want my friends…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →***Save often, alternate saves & be careful of where you save*** - This will save you many headaches. Outcast 1.1 is a great game. I'm enjoying the hell out of it, with a few exceptions. If you follow the advice above you will limit the only real issue I have with this title. There are many hours I've lost between my own negligence as well as where the game decided to shaft me. Below are a few examples of what I'm talking about. 1) When I 1st started the game. I played for about an hour,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this was the firs game i remember dreaming about at night when i was a kid, as an adult replaying it i am proud to say that those dreams came back aswell!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A truly ahead of it's time tech demo that sadly is so filled with bugs these days that you can royally screw your save and loose 10+ hours of time.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First time I played it got me evey kind of sensations. I was obsessed with this game. Shader effects without shaders. Polygonal and voxel tecnologies in one game. Superb music. Well thought-out world with lore and mythology. Holding game play. Outcast must get TEST OF TIME award
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I only played this for a couple hours, so bear that in mind. In a few ways, Outcast 1.1 is ahead of its time. It impressed me with its storytelling, humor, sound, and some minor touches that made it feel like it's a game that goes the extra mile. But it shows its age in its visuals and gameplay. Combat feels rough, just navigating around feels ehh. It has what is perhaps the most emasculating running animation in all of video games. I won't pretend I played a lot of the game, and I may give it…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A classic, yes the remake looks prettier, but the devolpers have made this game perform extremley well on modern systems. Forget about hand holding and waypoint markers its all up to you to navigate and figure out where to go and what to do. The first open world game pre-dating GTA 3. Give it a try and expirience a part of gaming history. 100% recommended!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Completionists beware a few missions do not count as been completed when done and a few more achievements are broken. There is a long thread in the forums that addresses this but the dev's stopped replying to it. That said it's nice to be able to play a piece of gaming history.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This... is really good. I've played this game before on a physical copy way back when I was younger, but windows 10 is too good at being itself and won't let me run the disk without tons of bugs, crashes, and border issues. But to now be able to play a digital version that doesn't screw around on a windows 10 is wonderful. I can now relive childhood memories of the windows xp era with this gem. Also, Shamazaar farm water doesn't slow you down anymore. 10/10.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →cant finish the tutorial, stuck on this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sneak test. every time i talk to him my character gets stuck, unable to move or use anything. also had it crash twice so far.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Knowing that this was impressive for its time, I was dissapointed. The worlds that you explore seem big initially, until you've crossed to the other end of the map and need to backtrack to finish a objective. That's when you realise that the vastness of the world is a illusion caused by the slow run and walk speed. Initially I justified it to myself as lower gravity doing its work, but all animations are slow and sluggish. Eventually you get to ride on the worlds' fine creatures that double…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played this first back when I was a kid. Remembered the deep conversation options, mesmerizing music and the never before seen water ripples. Voxel engine was a little bit weird but it worked. Maybe my favorite game of all time! Downloaded and played it again, lost none of it's magic! See it as a predecessor of games like Mass Effect.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A few months ago, I posted my review for Outcast: Second Contact — a high-resolution remaster of the 1999 game Outcast. This was exciting split from what I usually play, since the original Outcast was the subject of one of my first ever History Lessons posts; a game I played for the first time in 2009 and absolutely loved. Before trying the new version, however, I wanted to revisit the original, this time taking advantage of the 1.1 update that developers Appeal / Fresh3D released in 2014,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I realize this game is a classic but this "enhanced" version just doesn't do enough for me to play the game over twenty years later just out of pure nostalgia. The graphics hurt my eyes, the sound is deafening and the controls are atrocious. I'm going to try Outcast Second Contact and hope for the best. I like how they added achievements and controller support to the game but that's about it. Even for the sale price of under two dollars I cannot recommend this game unless you need to experience…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well, after seventy something hours of playing here on steam and comparing it with my memories eighteen years back with my mighty Celeron 400, here are few thoughts to help you make decision about this forgotten gem. +perfect story (might be good sci-fi novell) +voxel engine made this game unique and timeless (in far better way than mindcraft and others pseudo retro pixellstuff) +good dialogs, ORU is my favourite NPC +dont be afraid of somewhat weird controll scheme, you will get used to it…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of my best Game ever, bought the original in 1999! And when I found out about this "Refix" of the original. Well, what to say a Must Have Game!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It looks and plays exactly like it did when it first came out. I thought I had a really potato PC when I played it first, but turns out it wasnt the PC that was the spud!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There's a small number of games which I've revisited numerous times, and Outcast is one of them. When it first came out, it was a gorgeous game - but the graphics were highly reliant on a powerful CPU, which meant that a lot of people couldn't actually run the game, even at its ridiculously low resolution (even at the time). As a result, the game didn't go on to become a commercial success despite being widely praised otherwise. By the time I first laid my eyes on this gem a few years after it…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →it has some style but damn those controls are really bad. If the controls were redone and improved a lot then it would be worth playing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Outcast took me several tries to get into, but once it clicked, it clicked HARD. It has many things I was looking for in video games for quite a while -- large world, no hand-holding, freedom to tackle your objectives in any order and the feel of going on a grand adventure in the alien world. It lacks many things that would've been present in a modern game, like quest markers and constant tutorial pop-ups, which raises the barrier of entry for more casual players, but the game wouldn't be the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A gem from the era that could have been. It's some sort of a hybrid between shooter, adventure game and an RPG. It was first of its kind and the last, too.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The main character runs like a girl, lol but other than that. Super solid adventure game, if youre into the old gothic games or any kind of open world questing/adventureing id recomend this game to you 11 out of 10 times. The story is really good as although I still havent beaten it im really excited to do it, and theres certaintly plenty to do in this world with plenty of variety of envirement and climate between the zones.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Loved this game since i was only a child playing at 800x600 possibly one of the first games I played on a pc. Any news about the remastered edition? cuz you totally have my support.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game looks awful and it's pretty outdated. But the story, characters, milieu etc. are fantastic! When you get used to gameplay it's not that bad. I really enjoyed this one, I had the demo when I was like 10 years old and I liked it back then. So dont's let the graphics fool you, play this awesome game! Oh and the music is phenomenal!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →time to finish what i started 15 years ago...btw is there a way to make bullets go faster? its like slowmo atm
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First thought - old but can be good. After few hours of gameplay I've realised how wrong I was. Again, old != classic OR GOOD. More than 10 years in gaming and never heard of that game. Too bad it didn't stayed that way. Story is not interesting, same goes for character design and optimisation is beyond awful.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i do not understand how this was a commercial failure in 1999 this game was so far ahead of its time it boggles the mind that this isn't widely known as a classic, it has aged shockingly well, the soundtrack is beautiful the voice acting is rather good and the gameplay still feels great (a few bugs aside) i loved every minute of this it took me 26 hours to get to the ending of the game and even then i was missing some quests to get the full 100% i love outcast
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a bit dated, however it's every bit as good as it was when it originally released just in a much better package. I am having a delightful time exploring this world and helping to liberate the world. Can't wait to get on to the other two games after this one as well. Highly recommended if you want a *very* well written scifi story in an absolutely beautiful and well realized world.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A review about this game is long overdue as it's my favorite game of all time :-) I played it first in 1999 and fell in love with the world of Adelpha and somehow it stuck with me for all these 24 years. I don't think any game will mean more to me than this game - so yes, I am a bit biased and nostalgic. The world, its characters, the story, the open world exploration - it all fits together and was way ahead of it's time in 1999. It was a huge milestone in open-world creation and the most…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the greatest games ever made. So far ahead of its time it's ridiculous.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazing game, it was seriously ahead of its time when it originally came to life (1999)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Some achievements bugged. Don't play if you care about unlocking all achievements. I will update this review once the issue is resolved.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Best. Compter RPG. Ever. Fun combat, an actual plotline. funny dialog, good background scenery and music, interesting puzzles, and lots of fun subquests made this game invaluable. I'm extremely sad that there has never been an Outcast 2.x, but the Outcast 1.1 is old enough and plays well enough on older hardware that I have returned to it multiple times, especially to test out virtual machines.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After a series of crashes and a reboot, I could finally watch the intro video...and it is long. Very long with no way of getting past it. Afterwards it loads the menu screen again. Nothing I can do changes that. I watched it twice now and can't play the game because of the crash. In the forums, other crashers report similar and there are no answers for them. So I don't recommend buying this until it is confirmed it will actually work. What I CAN see of it is terrible. These movies contain…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game, very long, open worldishy and has a great soundtrack. The story was amazing and I had a lot of fun with the game, someday I'll revisit all the games I played and gather the nostalga from em, classics like this are unforgettable. but for now take it easy.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Exactly what i've been looking for. An Outcast half remake, improved almost everything leaving the rest untouched. I think that if you are here is because you had this game so i won't write an in depth review, you already know everything. BTW Infogrames was a badass back in the years where the funk are them?
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of my favorite game on earth. The storyline is awesome, the humor is great, the gameplay is addictiv.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Best hidden gem ever made!!! Voxels!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've been playing Witcher 3 and this game is like a general template for the Witcher 3. You ride this creature around (Roach) doing quests for villagers in several different open world lands. You are different than the creatures and npcs that inhabit this land. Here I have a pistol instead of swords and crossbow. The recreators (weapon smith) makes me ammo after collecting materials in the open world. You can travel through portals or use F-links (signposts). If there are the equivalent to…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A classic from my childhood. A bit hard to play nowadays, but nonetheless enjoyable. Great soundtrack as well.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Disclaimer I finished the game once. TL;DR If you'd like to experience a game that's impressive for it's time and don't mind jank associated with it being old - play it. Although the remake version (Outcast Second Encounter) could be a better choice. I don't know until I play it, which I plan on doing soon. Description In Outcast you play a Navy Seal special operative, who gets called in for a special job. Turns out some eggheads have discovered a way into a different dimension, but…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best adventures I have ever had in gaming. If you can overlook few janky design choices of 90´s gaming, you should definitely give this one a try.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Visionary. I can taste the beginning of open world games while walking through the fields of Adelpha. The game has aged surprisingly well considering its release date. I had been meaning to play this classic for a while and although some achievements appear to be bugged, the experience alone is worth it. If you plan on 100% it, get the new iteration. If you want to know what it felt like in 1999 to play this gem, then get this version. Cutter's treatment in Adelpha is exactly what it…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I thought this would be but boy was I wrong, I mean when you start the game there's a cutscene that about 11 minutes and then when actually start the game its just more long worthless talking from this aliens and the worse part is, I you die in the game even if make a save point you have start over the whole ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game. not worth the money and not worth anyone's time.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is the game that defined what a 5 star game means to me, back in the day. Excellent characterizations, excellent story full of a-ha surprises. The AI in the game is endearing, the humor is on point and the characters are all believable and it is a blast. 5/5 - and I never give anything 5. This is one of the few games you must play. If you don't you won't know where other games fall short.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of the best game I have ever played! Amazing storyline and symphonic music. I played 15 years ago, but still impressed with this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →still one of the best games i havê ever played!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of my most favorite game of all time. It has a wormhole, "aliens", a new planet, hi-tech weapons, and gadgets. Great, uplifting music, superb story, great gameplay elements, and it has a beautiful graphics. Don't be stuck up on the graphics being edgy, bricky. The games was originally made in 1999. And it has a voxel engine, meaning it isn't drawing triangles on the screen, but instead small cubes. This makes the game's mountains, snow, crystals and rocks and water simply beautiful. Don't…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →a bit rough around the edges, but overall an enjoyable experience
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I recommend this if you've played it in the past, or you really like the old-school approach. To make that clear, this is an absolute no-handhold game, I am talking "Make your own quest log on a paper" kind of game! If you're aware of that, I love the atmosphere. And for tze germans: It includes Bruce Willis' German voice with marvelous voice acting.... at least for the time. It's as cheesy as it's classy.
