Othello
Directed by Tom Morris
Moorish general Othello is manipulated into thinking that his new wife Desdemona has been carrying on an affair with his lieutenant Michael Cassio when in reality it's all part of a scheme orchestrated by bitter ensign Iago. Filmed live at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London especially for the big screen. From TMDB

They had a special deal for only $30 round trip from Vancouver to the Othello Tunnels in the Coquihalla Canyon and also the town of Hope, which leans into the fact it's the filming location for the Rambo movie First Blood

Sir Patrick Stewart playing a WHITE Othello, and Sir Ian Mckellen playing Richard III set in a 1930’s Nazi England. But nothing beats writing a programme that stereotypes Irish people.

In March of 1995, the world witnesses the release of Disney's Othello. The *entire* reason for this movie's existence is to have Gilbert Gottfried as Iago. Not just like a funny casting joke, he's the parrot from Aladdin. He wears like a hat and vest in this one or something, and no one ever mentions Aladdin or Agrabah, but it's like Baloo in TailSpin, you know damn well it's the same…

Know things just got serious when Orson Welles gets all Shakespearean in your face. Shot over 3 troubled years in Italy & Morocco, Welles at his most independent. #filmsky 📽 Criterion Collection 870

Came out 12 days before 9/11 and got lost in the shuffle (this after being delayed two years) because of Columbine. Mekhi Phifer, Josh Hartnett, Julia Stiles. It's on Criterion.

It was about Orson Welles and the final movie he made in '71 that didn't get finished until 2021 (by Netflix). In researching Welles, I discovered a rediculous amount of information about him that is not at all publically known. His children? One daughter lives in New York. Another in Sedona. But there's also the two he had out of wedlock in secret. (Both of which have documentaries about them) And then I…

Totally ignored by Hollywood, #OTD in 1952, the film won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival; it’s still one of my favorite Shakespeare movies. Welles makes a grand Othello.

Imagining other hypothetical examples of this. A Captain Ahab who just wants to go home? An Othello who talks to his wife?

Basil Dearden's fun 1962 noir All Night Long, a retelling of Othello set at a swinging London jazz party, with Patrick McGoohan as a conniving drummer in the Iago role breaking up the interracial couple. All Night Long (1962) is a terrific vibe film, a reworking of Othello set in an after hours jazz club (Charles Mingus and Dave Brubeck drop by). And the great Murder in the Red Barn with villainous Tod Slaughter.

I can't get out of my head that Heathcliff is somehow equal parts Edmond Dantes (The Count of Monte Cristo), Iago (Othello), & Snape (That Fucking Thing). To some, he was a one hit wonder, generating lavish praise and Oscar nods for Citizen Kane, then fading into oblivion; but that misses how exciting his self-produced films were; Othello is superb. Among the most innovative film directors, his influence lives on
