The HD-2D art style is gorgeous. Like, I stopped multiple times just to look at towns at night, the lighting, the water, all that. The music is also insanely good — it makes even random exploring feel important. Gameplay-wise, the combat is the main reason I stayed. The whole Break/Boost system feels really satisfying, and it stays fun because…

unlabelledView post →Land of the Bland Octopath Traveler starts with a very ambitious premise. We have eight characters and unlike other RPGs where the members of your party can have their own substories but do share the main one, here we're really talking about a story for each of them. These all occurs in the same world and yes, these members do form a party of eight along the way. This "party building" is done rather unnaturally, each member gets added just because of "You look strong" and "I could use an…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolutely too many random encounters, little to no overarching plot, nothing ties these people together nor do they really interact with each other at all. I spent entirely too much time wondering what the point of what I was doing was, and waiting for some grand "aha" moment where everything comes together...and it never comes. It's just more disjointed side-stories. Edit: Played the whole game. Did the "secret" boss that ties all the plots together. Still ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Still terrible…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Note yourself: Think twice before choosing a game with random encounters. Look at my playtime, and don't tell me I didn't try to give this game a chance because I really did, but I have limits with the amount of nonsense I can deal with. A couple of reasons for this I found are: It's getting too difficult The bossfights I meant. I don't know what it is, but the last 2-3 bossfights have been really stressful for me. Lasting for up to 30 minutes, feeling like endgame ones, but worse, any…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Started the game with the Huntress, finished her Chapter 1, seems fine so far. Proceeded to recruit the others one by one and doing their respective Ch1. Storywise, nothing stood out much. Doing 8 characters stories one after the other seems a little excessive. Decided to stick with 4 for now. Finished all 4 Ch4 and again nothing stood out. All 4 storylines were self centered with little to no worldbuilding. Lost interest in continuing but thought to myself ''surely this can't be it, I have to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've only completed the first chapters so far, but from what I've heard this doesn't change much: The stories differ a _lot_ in terms of quality. You have some stories that are super poorly written and which you will absolutely not care about, and you have others (hello Primrose) which make it seem like the devs had just remembered that they can actually do something interesting. However, even when a story segment is good, it only lasts for (at most) an hour at a time. For me personally, this…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I read the reviews, saw people talking about the lackluster story, decided to give it a shot either way. It's been about 20 hours of gameplay, and I just don't think I'll return to it. Here's what I enjoyed about it, first! 1. Gameplay Honestly the combat is fun, I enjoy the animations, the type of combat they made in this game is actually fun. With each character feeling unique with their own type of gimmick that helps the player succeed. Although it does get grindier later, in general I'd…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Frustratingly dull, this game has all the allure of a stylized flowchart. I struggled against my better judgement to find value in the individual stories. On completion of my first character arc (60+ hours in taking my time, progressing each of the other 7) the un-skippable credits rolled, and it was clear this game goes nowhere. Without a really cohesive story the grind becomes the focus of the game, and unfortunately, the grind is only moderately entertaining at best. I'd falsely hoped that…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →No spoilers The problem with the game is the story, how they tell it, and the overall game play loop being repetitive. if you play classic RPG's like this for a good story or to explore and figure it out on your own, you may want to skip this game. I love old school RPG's but I ended up disliking the game the further I got into it, and am not going to be playing the sequels. Pros: - Graphics are beautiful and unique - Combat system is solid Cons: - You're playing 8 separate stories. When…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The voice acting and writing is absolutely terrible. It's juvenile, forced, and actually takes away from the experience. I would rather have played it on mute. The gameplay is fun, but due to the incredibly poor writing the "story" is a joke.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played a demo of this game years ago on another system, and I thought it was generic. Years later, I bought it on a Steam sale(because I love Square Enix), and shoveled it into the backlog. Today, I am playing it, and I can't believe I thought it was generic. When I play this, I get the same sense of adventure that I did when I used to role-play Dungeons & Dragons. There is something about it that sparks my imagination. I am glad that I gave it another try. And, what is fun to think about...…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I thought this game was stupid when it first came out. Many years later and I find myself very much enjoying it on Steam Deck. Safe to say, this game is an awesome intro to JRPGs. Sometimes games just don't find you at the right time. Glad I gave it a second chance.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Didnt enjoy it. I like the idea but wish we had some interaction between party members, as is feels really jarring
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After 6h there is no overarching story, no common goals, no character-motivations to travel together, not even interactions between party members. How did they unlearn the basics of making a compelling RPG? The gameplay itself is fine, but definitely not good enough to solo-carry.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The amount of random encounters makes this game genuinely unplayable. If you want to explore around you will get punished by it with battles with some low level trash mobs every 5 seconds you walk completely ruining the flow of the game. You will then have to use your AOE skills to clear said mobs in a few turns and walk forward. There is no thinking or skill involved in those fights. Just mindless time waste. I would be fine if there was ONE fight on the way to every treasure chest but the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A diamond in the rough. Octopath Traveler screams classic SquareSoft/Enix JRPG homage. And it is in many ways. The presentation and art direction are just eye-candy, the soundtrack (from Yasunori Nishiki) and the combat leans to a more simplistic side but it's still engaging and challenging without relying on cheap tricks. It escapes being merely nostalgia bait to something that stands on its own. It isn't for everyone though, and can only be recommended for people who truly enjoy turn-based…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's good. Pretty grindy. Some of the stories are better than others. I have completed all the character chapters and unlocked all the special jobs. I don't have it in me to grind out the optional "final" boss. I have almost a million Octopath-bucks so can purchase whatever gear I need, I simply don't have the will to grind out a bunch of levels on dudes I don't enjoy playing just so I can beat the true ending. You're not going to figure everything out unless you have LOADS of time or…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →anyone who tells you there is no grinding in this game is lying to you: there are eight total characters. the four who aren't in your party don't get exp from combat. and you cannot remove one of them from your party. so that is at a minimum three different party groups that need to level separately in order to progress through the game. apart from that the story doesn't make sense narratively. for some of these characters there's no reason for them to party up with others. you walk up to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Lots of fun short stories that ties together nicely for some unexpected world-building towards the end. I love JRPGS and I'm looking forward to trying the next one.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Started, stopped, and then restarted the game after nearly 100%'ng Adventures of Elliot. Generally enjoy most of the characters, the combat feels rewarding, and stealing items from every NPC is wonderful. Probably won't 100% the game but will be seeking out all endings and will then move on to OT2. Grab the demo if you haven't tried. Play Elliot if you haven't played that as well.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really want to like this game, and I did at first, because the visuals are superb. The use of the 2.5D, depth of field, and pixel art combine to make the game beautiful. Furthermore, the OST is fantastic (Battle II is an all timer imo). What caused me to abandon the game though is its lack of depth. There are thirty two individual chapters divided into four per character, where they all occur in the same manner. Enter a beautiful, but unoriginal, town → talk to people there → encounter a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's fine, but just go play the second one - 7/10 I made the mistake of starting with Octopath Traveler II, which is one of the best recent JRPGs. Now, the original one pales in comparison, and since the plots are unrelated, it's very hard to recommend the first Octopath. From graphics and music to depth and fluidity of the game mechanics, the sequel simply improves on everything. As a result, this game simply feels janky and a chore to play. There's more grinding, less skill options in…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I started playing this game after I bought it on sale, I gave it a shot, It didnt pull me in so i decided to come back to it. After picking it up back up I just felt like I should play something else. I also did not get far into the story of the 8 characters. It was just not enough to draw me in. The art style and the quick turn base combat are very good. Its a slower pace game that I just couldnt get invested into it. I don't see myself finishing this game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Quite a fun game. Art, music, story and characters are all quite good. The gameplay is great and the Break and BP systems are very fun and feel great to use. While it's no Press Turn it is still quite a step above most Turn-Based RPGs. The exploration was great. It does the pseudo-open world thing that Unicorn Overlord does where you can reach later areas with the risk of higher level enemies for the reward of better gear, shops and higher exp enemies. The areas all look great as well. Random…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Graphics are great, combat is fun, characters are cool. It's a shame everything else is uninteresting and disjointed. If you're bored of epic tales and ensemble casts, check this out. If you like a cohesive and interesting story that's story driven and narrative focused, pass on this.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game isn't worth the price tag at all. The main story lines are all rather short and easy to beat. After that the late game is comprised of optional quests. You have to go find the quest then hunt your prey. Many of the bosses in the late game are poorly designed. I have been stuck on one of the last available bosses. The fight always goes the same way. I do well, get him to the last phase, and then the boss gets 10 AE attacks until I die. I often think I can't possibly lose this…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TLDR: buy on deep discount and go in with low expectations. If you're not hooked by the core gameplay loop after playing one or two chapters, the rest isn't going to do it for you. I picked up this game on sale wanting a fairly chill, old school RPG experience on the Steam Deck (on which it runs brilliantly). The premise of the game is that you can experience 8 different character paths, so I started with the dancer, Primrose (who has one of, if not the best, story in the game). Right out of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I spent 107 hours with the game, completing most of the content and reaching the true ending (and to say that it wasn't easy is to say nothing, you have to do a LOT to reach true ending). The reason I was hooked was the satisfying gameplay loop. I enjoyed the combat and music; it's simply a joy to play, despite the fact that the theoretically core gameplay is weak. Most of the story (Alfyn, Primrose, Othilia, Tressa, Haanit) is a boring snoozefest, and the dialogue in this game is terrible,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought this with my Christmas steam gift card and got to say it was extremely attention grabbing and sucked me in til 1am which is late for me being first shift. Great pixel art and music. I enjoyed figuring the battle system. Very solid game at 9/10. July 5th 2026 update: I completed this game with 170 hours. Game was worth every penny. The Secret Final boss was an absolute pain but that's part of the challenge. Figuring out the combos of the classes in battle was fun. Primrose was my…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's good but not great. The graphics are impressive for a pixel-art game, gorgeous even. That's really all I have to say about that, we all know graphics don't make or break a game. The music is really good, but not great. I found myself humming and whistling a few of the tunes while not playing the game. But the bar for music in Square RPG's has been set so high that I can't call it great -- it's not Final Fantasy tier. The combat can be fun, but it can also get old. It kept me engaged…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game was fantastic it is honestly one of the best turn based rpgs I have played but one down side is that in late game it does get a little grindy trying to level up the characters.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beautiful game with a genuinely charming cast and a combat system that keeps you engaged, but the random encounter rate will test your patience in ways the actual bosses never do. Still worth it, just be prepared to fight the same three enemies approximately ten thousand times before you finish.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After spending over 100 hours with Octopath Traveler, I have mixed feelings — but mostly positive ones. The music is outstanding and never gets old, even after such a long playtime. The HD-2D visuals are beautiful, and each character’s story is emotional and memorable. However, the gameplay started to feel suffocating over time. The combat system is fun at first, but grinding and replaying content for all achievements became exhausting. Trying to 100% the game almost made me sick of it.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am glad Square is making more turn-based RPGs, but I did not care for Octopath Traveler. The game is extremely grindy and combat is very slow. Having eight main characters sounds fun in theory, but it also means keeping your characters properly equipped and at an appropriate level to progress the story is a tedious slog. Furthermore I did not find any of the protagonists' stories to be particularly interesting. I would rather have one good campaign than eight mediocre campaigns.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Story was awful, gameplay was generally fun. -1 +1 = 0. Do not recommend.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The art style is really nice, but the plot and characters are nothing worth investing in. Which makes every single interaction with the game feel like a grind to me.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game could be so much more. The environment is so vibrant and beautiful, the music is other-dimensional, and the boss designs are quite unique and a fresh breath of air. However... the main story leaves a lot to desire. The eight traveler stories barely overlap in any way, and the plot twists are generic and predictable. I wish there were more side stories that personally involved each of the eight travelers and fleshed out more of their background. Additionally, interactions between…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →waited 20 hours for it to get good, never happened. dont waste ur time on this. stories are all mini arcs bound to the character and don't tie together at all, gameplay is on the level of most rpgmaker games play the sequels, they're prolly better
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game itself is great! The combat is fun, the graphics are gorgeous, I feel everything is really well-designed. I don't care at all about the story though. They made it so artificially slow-paced that it's a struggle. In cut scenes, a common theme is to watch your character s l o w l y walk over, stand in place for 5 seconds, then watch a little icon pop up over their head. Then another character might do it. Then they might begin the process of thinking about preparing to consider…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have over 100 hours in Octopath Traveler, and I honestly find it difficult to recommend it. Before I explain why, let me start with who I do recommend it to. If you've already played a lot of mainstream JRPGs and are curious to see where Square Enix's HD-2D style began, I think it's worth checking out. Who wouldn't I recommend it to? Anyone who cares a lot about storytelling, anyone who is still new to JRPGs since there are many better games that deserve your time first, and anyone who…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Combat is stellar, some of the best I've seen from a JRPG. The reason I can't recommend this is the narrative, or lack thereof. Before people start, I know there's the whole Gate of Finis section, but locking the 'proper' story behind eight mediocre storylines, a bunch of seemingly random side quests, 50+ hours of content, and an absurdly difficult boss rush isn't quite cutting it, imo. It's not just the lack of depth to the characters, but also the strange way they handle the travelling…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →*Play this game before octopath traveler 2, the QOL features in octopath traveler 2 can make this game unenjoyable for some* Probably my favorite series for classic cozy rpg, octopath traveler is a game you take your time with. Characters are well written, the graphics are some of the coolest I have ever seen, and the battle mechanics are refreshing enough to keep the battles from getting stale. I also like the fact that the game feels very open world, you can tackle the stories at your own…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First Pick H'aanit, can't change character, mad. Capture OP Monster, beating fallen god, stay at hell you ♥♥♥♥♥, madness channeled, not mad anymore. Good game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I just couldn't get into this. The plot is recycled from dozens of other JRPGs, the characters just don't feel sympathetic, and the story's specifics are just plain uninspired. I have identical complaints about other Squeenix games so I call it the "Squeenix Curse." Because ever since they merged in '10, Squaresoft lost everything that made it the gold standard for JRPGs while Enix games always felt rather cookie-cutter and that hasn't changed a bit.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An RPG reminiscent of the Final Fantasy series, Octopath Traveler pairs modern graphics with a wonderfully cozy style. While the story doesn’t quite match FF's depth, the engaging combat system, gorgeous art style, and brilliant soundtrack easily make up for it. As someone who deeply values a game's aesthetic, I highly recommend it. An extra bonus: despite its updated visuals, it remains remarkably lightweight, requiring minimal storage and resources. The only thing I’d change is making it…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good game even if I was trolled by the secret boss. Remember you need ALL your party members to be decently leveled before doing the last boss. Got lazy since I lost so much progress. Main issue is the lack of QOL. Quests/PurpleChests/Scrutinize a lot of small, but really annoying things. I wanted to go for 100%, but it was just annoying. Definitely still worth playing despite all that.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I liked this game. Loved the art style and the music and the surprisingly mature stories for each traveler. I was expecting their stories to all come together much more than actually happens. This title will really try your patience with the lack of direction. I have plenty of time to spend playing video games but come on, the way side quests work just wastes your time for no good reason. Have fun talking to every single NPC on every map. Collection achievements but no in game tracking?…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Octopath Traveler review Preface When Octopath Traveler came out in 2018 it felt like a breath of fresh air. JRPGs have come a long way since the 90s. But that's not necessarily always a good thing. While more complex stories, more cinematic experiences, and more action elements can be enticing. The nostalgic simplicity of well-designed turn-based combat seemed to have been largely tossed to the wayside during the 7th console generation. This game is exactly what I wanted and needed in 2018.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A gorgeous game wrapped in an uninspiring script I am gonna start with the only and biggest problem I have with this game - the plot/story. I tried liking this game, but alas, I simply cannot understand how can this be considered an interesting plot. As I see it, they took the worst elements of jRPG stories and shoved it into one game: Disconnected* sub stories - 8 party member - 8 stories and barely any interactions between them. Only from this point the whole party interaction and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →8 main characters 8 boring cut and paste stories I have put in a decent amount of time in here, but the gameplay is just not interesting enough to keep going and i couldnt care less about the individual characters plot doubt ill even try the sequel but i picked that up already while they were on sale
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Octopath Traveler is an absolute masterpiece. Its stunning HD-2D pixel art is some of the best in any modern RPG, and the turn-based combat is endlessly fun, strategic, and satisfying. Each of the eight characters is lovable in their own way, with personal stories that are engaging and full of heart. From visuals to gameplay to character charm, everything comes together beautifully. Verdict: ★★★★★ (5/5) – A must-play for anyone who loves JRPGs, artful storytelling, or pure RPG nostalgia…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm sorry but it's just not good. I don't understand why people like it so much. I have to assume that people just like it because they think pixel graphics = good.. But it's bad. The encounter rate is jacked up through the roof. The game is just 8 completely unrelated stories, that are all really boring. You're locked stuck with your starting character in your party, even though there's absolutely no reason for that. The world design is boring. The dungeons all feel exactly the same. The NPC…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not what I expected, and in a good way. The battle system for additional effects and damage is really nice, but the story is what absolutely took me. I really feel like this sort of pixel game does better for the experience than flashy graphics would, and keeps me from getting distracted from gimmick battles that interrupt the flow of the story. It's a shame this is Squaresoft's oddball rather than the norm now.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This might be one of the worst games I've ever played. Do not buy this garbage, even if it is free. The simple fact that there is an achievement for playing 10 hours of it, AND less than 50% of owners have that achievement, should tell you all you need to know.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't get it. All the hype about the game and the series. For what, exactly? It has the worst parts of every JRPG and almost none of the good ones. Here are the positives: - The overworld abilities of the characters seem interesting on a glance. I started the game with the warrior whose name I already forgot because they are all super forgettable. He can beat up villagers which is funny for the first 3-4 times you do it. - End of list. The negatives: - The combat is barebones - Random…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty much perfect as what it's meant to be. Everything from the graphics, to the mechanics are all an homage to snes era JRPGs in a way that highlights it rather than replicates it perfectly. It also imports shortcomings from that era, but not to a hugely detrimental degree and I think their inclusion was intentional as part of recreating the genre. The only full negative is the game's length could make in inaccessible for some. The intro is longer than most games.
