You will not like this game if you hate Solitaire. The "cosmic horror" aspect is entirely in the form of short stories between levels, there is nothing remotely cosmic or horror in the gameplay. Other than solitaire, this is an inductive logic puzzle, which is a genre of puzzle you don't see much of, and is the main reason why I recommend it. There are 7 puzzles in the "main" line up to the credits, which are all fairly easy. The more interesting puzzles come in the post-game…

Yes, I recommend this game, but not without reservations. What I love: The writing is phenomenal and creepy, the lore is intriguing, the music is suitably creepy and moody but not intrusive. The first few levels of puzzles are really fun. What bothers me: I expected the puzzles to get more difficult as I went on, and they do, but they get to the point where they are prohibitively difficult. Example: I got frustrated and looked up how to do the Punch Card. The first thing it said in the…

There is a small class of games of inductive games, the first I know about is Eleusis - a card game by Robert Abbott. The idea of the games are that you are expressly not told the rules for a particular level/hand, and have to figure it out during play. The sort of puzzle solving is not what one usually sees - you don't try to figure it all out from an initial position, you need to experiment and theorize, and if the puzzles are well designed you get an aha and then have mastered the puzzle.…

First thing first: this is a card solitaire. If that's not something you'd enjoy solving again and again, move along, this is not _much_ else there. I did not like the writing even a little bit: very cliché, tries to appeal to your emotions but does not always make logical sense. Now this game presents a _single_ solitaire with the same rules. Those are explained to you in the tutorial. There are seven variants on how the required final card for each foundation communicated to you via the coins…

Definitely a mixed thumbs up, For the first half of the game, and the initial set of achievements, I absolutely loved it. Working out the hidden rules behind each Ritual was incredibly satisfying, especially the second puzzle. Once the solution clicks, it feels so obvious that you wonder how you ever missed it. It's the Cardinals, and the second batch of achievements, where the game lost me. Rather than feeling like clever deductions, many of them become so obtuse that I don't think a normal…

In a word: Unsatisfying I like games where you figure out the rules as you go. Losing a bunch for not knowing them, then figuring them and out then using mastery of the previously obscured systems to do well feels good. This game isn't like that. The "Figuring out the rules" part wasn't that hard (for the first few rounds that you can play within the refund window), but knowing them isn't enough of an advantage in the core gameplay to make much of a difference. It felt like I spent relatively…

I find the store description that this is a narrative-driven puzzle game quite misleading. There are just some lore snippets and that's it. Calling this narrative-driven is really far-fetched. However, getting behind the rulesets of the different rituals (puzzles) is quite fun so far. So even if I was highly disappointed with the lack of a story, I am pleasantly surprised by how fun this solitaire variant can be.

Solitaire with specific rules + hidden rules on each game. Roughly the game difficulty can be divided up to 3 levels: Story mode, original mode and cardinals. Story mode is the easiest as it allows unlimited undo's and +1 extra slot to set aside a card in your way. This one slot gives the player a major advantage and the undo basically breaks some of the difficulty in majority of the games so Story mode is by far easiest. None of that easy stuff in original mode. You don't have the extra slot…

The pitch sounds so cool - discover the rules to different variants of solitaire. Sadly the reality under-delivers. Every game uses the same base Solitaire rules - the only thing that changes is essentially a side quest. Additional rules that, if followed, will unlock one of the alternate endings. There are only 4 possible endings for each mission, and "uncovering the secrets" is perhaps 4-6 hours of gameplay. Aside from that, Occlude is a sub-par Solitaire title. I'd love to see the devs add…

Yeah, nah. It's a pretty standard solitaire variant with the twist that a particular card needs to be the last one placed on the stack for each of the four suits. You're not told what card this is. If you place a card incorrectly a coin flips and you'll need to start the puzzle over. However, before flipping, the coin will move to a different position. The puzzle comes in working out what rule has been triggered that would cause the coin to move, and using this to deduce the correct final card.…

Starts off very strong, then ramps up with obscure tactics on ritual 4. Would have been a lot more enjoyable with a slightly more ramped difficulty curve, which could have been as simple as marking coins to a particular suit, because the 4th ritual makes it seem almost randomized.

For me, an ideal puzzle game has a short window between knowing the solution for one puzzle and moving on to the next. As other commenters have said, the problem I had with Occlude is that knowing the solution to the puzzle actually just makes it harder to play the solitaire, and the rigged game of solitaire is getting between you and the next puzzle. I bought this thinking the rules of the solitaire itself would change, or there'd be more experimentation to find different outcomes. Since…

It's a slight little game, this one. I enjoyed my entire time with it save for the moment when I realized the scope of the game I was playing, and how small it is.
