60 of 89 · most liked first4 MIN Video Review https://youtu.be/Jrc6Jgtv6fc Written Review Oaken is a very promising turn-based card game that brings unique twists to the genre, all wrapped in a beautiful aesthetic. Each new run, has you select a Hero and a Guide. These come with their own unique skills and units to use in combat. However, as of this review, there is only one hero, and four guides to select from. I found the main gameplay loop to be very interesting, with a lot of depth the further I dug. At the…

Is this game a masterpiece? Nope, it is in Early Access, and there is some polish (like UI scaling) and additional content missing, although all 3 planned chapters are already included. I wouldn't want to label a game currently in 0.3.5b Beta as a masterpiece, but I definitly enjoyed what I played. This is a roguelike turn-based strategy…

unlabelledView post →After playing Oaken a few hours I wrote a very positive review as I very much enjoyed playing the game. Now, after completing most of the content I'm less enthusiastic about the game, at least for a more casual gamer like myself. I've played many of the more popular card battlers on Steam and have completed most of them on normal difficulty. Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to beat the final boss (or even sub boss) with the second unlockable hero. For me the difficulty spikes in the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game plays like a puzzle game but punishes you like a rouge-lite. Leaves a very bad feeling after losing for not understanding a new mechanic the first time you are presented with it. On repeated playthroughs its very repetitive as you have already solved many of these puzzles in the past.

unlabelledView post →+ Excellent art style + Minimalistic interface + Runs smoothly, I encountered zero bugs - Only 4 cards in hand severely limits options - Not enough content yet - Not really any strong combos to play around with - Matches feel like a drawn out heavyweight boxing match rather than an elegant chess match - Outside of combat, it's a blatant copy of Slay the Spire, and this has been done too much by other developers - No original ideas, just a mix-match of ideas from other games. Even the art…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Got free time. Downloaded the demo. Got hooked after few minutes. Art is nice. Tactical tools (units, upgrades, field-modifier, etc) are thematic and various. Definitely wanted to buy after demo. Been anticipating launch for few days. Hoped that it wouldn't be expensive. Launch. Does not disappoint at all. Cheap. So I bought the supporter pack for such good game. Game is quite challenging in higher diff. The only downside for now is it's still early access. So it can be cleared in few hours…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game looks innocent enough at a glance but it has alot of problems keeping me from recommending it to anyone. 1. The cute art doesnt translate to the in-match graphics. I can't even tell what some of the models are during combat. 2. match bonus objectives are sometimes literally impossible. 3. Overall difficulty is poorly balanced, the enemy is always powered up to bejesus while you are begging for half a ham sandwich to fight back with. 4. The absolute biggest problem in this game is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A turn based hex grid with cards. Its based around using plants to restore nature and defeat corrupt spirits. Pros: - Art is nice with purple and green hue on tiles. - Can delete cards or spells for free and get back resources. Avoids issue of having a deck with mediocre cards. - Normal and easy difficulties available. Cons: - Levels are repetitive - beat x amount of enemies is 90% of levels. - No speed up mode for battles. The animations show a unit damaging another unit or moving on a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It plays a lot like a puzzle game, slow and stategic. The issue I feel is that its not engaging, either you get ahead early in the match and then you just slowly wait for more enemies to spawn "going through the motions" so to speak while killing everything. Or you fall behind and get swarmed and lose, there's not a lot of in between. There is very little back and forth in the matches or making brilliant moves to get yourself out of a tough spot. The exception to this is the elites and the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like the music. I like the aesthetics. I like the idea of the tactics in the game. Overall though, I have mixed feelings about the game. I do want to say beforehand that it's definitely worth the price, and it's clear that the devs have put in a lot of work and love into the product. Personally, the runs I've had with the game have felt somewhat unsatisfying. I never really felt that strong, even though I objectively was. I found most wisps (attachable upgrades) rather useless. I found most…

unlabelledView post →I think Oaken had potential to be a very interesting title, but it falls short in some important areas. The UI is functional, but I was frequently making mistakes directly as a result of the poor UI. As you begin to learn interactions, coupled with easy to predict enemy AI, Oaken very quickly became too easy to remain interesting. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't know what it is with Oaken that I just can't get "into" it. The art style is nice, the music is relaxing, even if it just reminds me of playing The Witcher 3... And technically it does have everything that should make it a good rogue-lite combat card battler or whatever, but for some reason it just doesn't resonate with me. Like, at all. Not just "it's alright, but whatever", but more like "I actively dislike it"... and I don't know why. I've played them all, from Slay the Spire to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Oaken draws immediate comparisons to Faeria, but it stands out as a standout game in its own right. While it incorporates the hex map as a key element, it doesn't overshadow other aspects. The game focuses on unit survivability, requiring strategic resource management and navigating through encounters to build a formidable force capable of overcoming challenging bosses at the end of each chapter. It includes all the quality-of-life features you could desire. Enjoy its charming art and style,…

While there is an option to disable it, the spyware has already started harvesting your personally identifiable information (IP address etc etc) and sending it to the developer for resale to third parties before you can reach the menu to try turn it off and protect your privacy. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →5/10 lots of small things that bug me, but they all add up all my runs end the same way, even with max starting bonuses. i still get slowly ground into the dirt as every card gets weaker and weaker with each fight until i cant heal anything. - combat is a little on the slow side, not that bad. this is the kind of game that you play well watching a tv show tho + music + art style - its not super clear who your leader is and if they die its game over. - you can go from full health to no health in…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Oaken is a very unique Roguelite Deckbuilder. It takes what you love about the genre, and puts it into a Grid-Based combat system. It has a lot of strategy and Resource Management weaved into it, so it is complex enough to keep you hooked. And although the difficulty is quite hard on your first playthrough, once you understand the game more it gets a lot easier. My only nitpick is most of my runs have lasted 3+ hours, and even though there is a save system to come back to it later. I like to…

unlabelledView post →I enjoy card battlers and turn-based tactics games like Slay the Spire, Midnight Suns and Astrea but this honestly wasn't very fun to me. Concept seems similar enough to Slay the Spire but I didn't really like the graphics. Played on my Deck and this game always makes me a little bored.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not Very Compelling 5/10 Right away you will notice Oakens combat animations and visuals are pretty lack luster (on the game board), which is sad because the actual models when previewed are generally pretty detailed. I would have liked to see some zoomed in fighting scenes so I could enjoy the character models more; from the tabletop view everything becomes too bland. Then you have the game style choice. IMO, Rogue-like was the wrong format here. Oaken would have benefited greatly from…

If you are interested in the game and it's before March 5th, 2024, consider picking up the game as part of the current monthly bundle. Tile-based Slay the Spire. That’s right, Oaken is a Deckbuilder, and that means comparisons to Slay the Spire, because… yeah, it is Slay the Spire on the map. However Oaken also has hex-based combat where units move around a grid, and there are…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Oaken looked promising at first glance, the kind of charming, strategy based adventure that seems perfect for relaxing sessions. But once the novelty fades, the game reveals itself as a very repetitive TFT style experience with far too little variety to keep things interesting. The entire game practically revolves around a single character. Instead of offering different playstyles, tactical approaches, or fresh mechanics, Oaken locks you into the same loop over and over again. No matter how…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not great, not terrible. Overall, you can try it. Pros: -Genuine progression, you can get hooked for a few hours in a "one more run" cycle -Nice art, you can tell a lot has gone into it Cons: -The biggest con is that the game is way too easy -Game design is not clean enough, too much unnecessary stuff is going on between wisp, lumi dust, lumi globe. Also, most wisps are useless -Too much focus on making lots of units that are only slightly different, there's no appeal to play them all -The…

It feels like using 5 pawns to fight 12 queens in a lot of the stages. Honestly looks like alot of work went into it, but not alot of QT
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very nice strategic game with great music. Comes off as easy at first but continues to get more difficult and opens up new strategies. The music is fantastic as well, I only wish there was more of it. Highly recommended.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very limited cards in the beginning hinder the appeal and suggest a lack of overall content, but the situation does rapidly improve. After the first run, it's a fun card tactics game, which poses some surprising puzzles.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Incredible game! This game is built around solid rogue-like and turn-based strategy that is so fun but also challenging. After the first play through on normal I spent many moments in deep contemplation as if I was in a chess game. The strategy is a lot more varied than chess though which is really fun and keeps you on your toes as soon as you think you have it figured out. The game is also so beautiful, I love the environment and story although it is not the kind of story that is wordy and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →10/10! A unique and complex combat system, catchy music, and satisfying graphics make Oaken a must-play for anyone who enjoys strategy games. Every run feels unique with tons of starting guides and different strategies to build around. The dialogue in game also supports this feeling of unique runs, as the dialogue before important events changes depending on which guide you bring. Worth every penny and then some. I can't wait to see how this game "grows" as it continues to develop.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really want to recommend this, but unfortunately I just cannot, as the text is way too small and blurry, even with "High readability font" enabled. The issue persists both on 4K tv screen and on Steam Deck, which is extra unfortunate because the game is marked as Deck Verified, and the verification details explicitly specify that the text is supposed to be well-readable on deck. If I would have bought it directly I would have requested a refund, but I've got it through Humble Choice, so…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While I was enjoying the game initially, after having enough hours to see the overall depth and adjusted to the lack-lustre UI, this has fallen into a frustrating category where 80% of the game is enjoyable but the remaining 20% kills all momentum and fun. The UI and visuals need a rework and a lot of the mechanics should be reworked.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →it's not there yet. The combat and strategy is similar to one of those clicker mobile game. It's more a rogue-lite than a rogue-like. super pretty, but need some more meat in the combat department.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very promising game for everyone who likes hex-based combat, Slay the Spire and a cute artstyle. Things that will hopefully improve soon: - More than 1 track for the OST - More boss variety - Shorter runs
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a good 'un - smooth and polished hex based and card mash-up with great gameplay and a rocking soundtrack! Does not feel early access at all

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pleasantly surprised by how much fun I'm having with this game despite it being in early access. The gameplay is phenomenal, bringing its unique ideas mixed with the best mechanics from tactics games and roguelike games into something completely brand new. It's the perfect mix of easy-to-learn mechanics that are hard to master. There is a ton of risk-reward and skill involved in the game, which I really think the game nails! There is also a really good mix between RNG and choice when it comes…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm giving this game a tentative thumbs up. Tentative because I'm having a fun time and I like the direction this game is going but at this point in it's release the content is still a little limited. People like to compare this game to Slay the Spire - I don't see it. Yes, the chapter maps work the same. That's about it. The actual gameplay has more in common with Chess than StS tbh. Ultimately it's a summoner game where you have a head unit that brings other minions (via "cards") to the…
