Along with new scenes, Del Toro discusses how moments "breathe" more in ways that feel natural to B&W. With the package/layout, it's also positioned as THE version to watch moving forward.

unlabelledView post →this is worth checking out. I enjoyed Del Toro's version of NIGHTMARE ALLEY but a black and white version would give it that old school film feel.

unlabelledView post →Wow, they’re renaming the Cinespace Studios after Guillermo del Toro and gave him the Toronto key to the city! Amazing. Such a talented director, and his love for the city has meant a lot to the local film industry. My husband worked on Nightmare Alley, Cabinet of Curiosities, and Frankenstein.

It’s right down the street from Paramount so we might get lucky people watching! What are we having? #TCMParty
unlabelledView post →Thinking of the ghastliness of circuses, I think that Guillermo del Toro's NIGHTMARE ALLEY is a great film but I feel certain that it never found its audience because it's an unapologetic *bummer*. This is correct. William Lindsay Gresham's novel is also a bummer.
unlabelledView post →Tyrone Power in NIGHTMARE ALLEY (1947) Power was BOTD in 1914. He singled NIGHTMARE ALLEY out as his personal favorite of the movies he made. If you're a fan of hardboiled fiction, the 1946 Lindsay Gresham novel upon which the film is based is a must read.
unlabelledView post →Books to film 📚=🎞️ Nightmare Alley (1946) by William Gresham was adapted in 1947 & 2021. The latest version, directed by Guillermo Del Toro, more closely mirrors the novel. Using the cutthroat carnival circuit as a backdrop, we get a descent into a crisis of faith & nihilism. 💀🎪😱 #filmsky #booksky

unlabelledView post →Nightmare Alley (2021). Like Crimson Peak (2015), it will get "rediscovered" 15 years from now. A gorgeous film, trembling with a death drive and rich wood paneled rooms. It makes me smile to see the Del Toro repertory players pop up in small parts, like Jim Beaver in a memorable scene as a sheriff.

I like the 1947 film adaptation starring Tyrone Power, but it's really watered down. Never seen the more recent version with Cate Blanchett

unlabelledView post →Poster for NIGHTMARE ALLEY (1947), directed by Edmund Goulding - BOTD in 1891 The movie is very good, but the 1946 William Lindsay Gresham novel it's based on is a stone cold classic of hardboiled literature
unlabelledView post →There's a lot of reasons there: * Oscar winning directors get too much of a free hand on budget and runtime - Mikey 17 was really good but with that budget it was doomed to, at best, break even. * They get offered big projects they may be unsuited for - there was nothing about Nomadland that said Chloé Zhao was ready to direct a blockbuster Marvel movie and it just felt like a cynical exercise to get a bit of indie cred. I doubt she had much creative freedom on The Eternals and would be…

unlabelledView post →I haven't seen FRANKENSTEIN yet, but hot take: the B&W extended cut of NIGHTMARE ALLEY is del Toro's greatest movie. A triumph that proves you can make 'em like they used to and even better. This is an achievement most filmmakers would die to craft.

All while Disney was breaking box-office records yet again with a Spider-Man movie.

With a brilliant screenplay by Jules Furthman, sensitive direction by Eddie Goulding, and a perfect cast... this is the definitive version (sorry GDT) of William Lindsay Gresham's bleak, pitiless, terrifying novel. Essential. #NoirvemberChallenge

unlabelledView post →Couldn’t resist picking up Guillermo del Toro‘s “Nightmare Alley” on 4K due to it being a b&w recut of the theatrical film - stuff taken out/new scenes added. And great extra features. What I also really appreciated was getting noir artist Thomas Ott to create the art for the packaging.
unlabelledView post →Fantastic writing here, @sarahweinman.com. Nightmare Alley might be my favorite Del Toro, despite all the other showier movies of his that I love. Just a perfectly built movie. (It's also just about a 1:1 match with the Save the Cat formula, which somehow doesn't diminish it in any way.)

unlabelledView post →Nightmare Alley (1947) is not your usual noir film. No gumshoes or dark alleys - and only a single, dubious murder. But it’s got plenty of femme fatales and seedy, grimy thrills. The whole picture is a fascinating indictment of sacreligious swindling.
