I think the underlying mechanics as a rogue-like deck builder aren't bad, but personally I get this feeling like the creators were more concerned with using the source material/themes as a 'costume' for the underlying game without taking any care to talk about or inform (if even a little) about the serious source materials they are pulling from and how people can actually deal with phobias/how phobias affect them. The term "window dressing" comes to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Disappointed in this one. About the only pro I've got is that I really dig the distinctive art style. The actual relationship to mental health seems to be almost limited to borrowing terms related to the field, in a manner that seems to almost make light or trivialize issues like dealing with phobias. I don't have the same (kind of purist, IMO) objections to the combination of both a "mana meter" and an action limit, and the mechanics in general seem okay, though not very novel. I think the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For a game that deals with heavy psychological topics, this game smacks of not actually understanding psychology at all. It treats all phobias as if they can be "defeated" or "overcome" with comfort food and a cat, rather than actual counseling, and seems to be making light of its entire theme. I'd love to play more to talk about mechanics, but the theme is done so poorly that I have no interest in pursuing it.

Neurodeck is a psychological roguelike deckbuilder. Gameplaywise it's best compared to Slay the Spire. You probably already know, but Neurodeck is about phobias. Your enemies are different phobias, like spiders, clowns, or different feelings mixed into a shadow (a group of people laughing about you, etc.). The story is built around that, making it a pretty dark…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought this on a whim because I liked one of the publisher's other deckbuilder (Banners of Ruin) and thought this would be an interesting and provocative take on the genre. I was unfortunately wrong. The mechanics are fine, if a little opaque at first, and much like other deckbuilders the learning curve is a bit steep at the beginning. The problem comes with the theme - it feels disjointed. Cards and their effects have strange connections bordering on straight confusing. Sometimes the theme…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First of all, the game just got released so this is a review of the game in its earliest state. That being said, it oozes of potential right off the bat. Here are my thoughts on the good things and the bad: THE GOOD- Gameplay is fun and addicting. Another one of those "Easy to learn, difficult to master" kind of card game. The setting and gimmick is also unique, having you battle against your fears in an attempt to conquer them. There is also a fair amount of replayability here, with there…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This may very well be the very worst portrayal of mental health in a video game I have ever seen, and that's really saying something.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm an ignorant American, so I only speak English with any degree of facility. I'm neither proud nor ashamed of this fact. I'm getting along fine, all things considered. But I'm also a game designer. And if I were trying to sell a game with a narrative focus and fairly complex rules concepts in another country, I'd hire someone who speaks the country's language very well. Preferably a native speaker. Because when you don't do that and you're not an absolute master of languages, you end up with…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In a really weird way, this game makes me feel...better? The goal is to defeat phobias with the use of positive coping mechanisms (your cards) that you start with, and then between rounds you can either strengthen your cards, discard old ones to bring way for new ones, or work on yourself by strengthening your stamina or mind. As someone with mental illness, it's therapeutic to see my little coping mechanisms fight the ugly phobias of the world
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Time and again people think psyche/communication are a good enough theme to become a card game's USP. Time and again they are wrong. Neurogame doesn't feel like an actual game, more like a student project. It's not jank, the basic systems are in place, they're just bad. The game lacks the simplest QoL features like calculating the damage you'll deal (for cards like "deal 5*number of items you've used this game") or showing maximum hand size. For some reason it always offers a choice between…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In addition to the lack of mechanical depth, the tips and card balancing make it clear that the developers don't have a clear understanding of how resource management tends to work in these sorts of games. After about 2-3 tries I cleared a run for the first time and my reaction was simply "that's it?" because I felt like I hadn't really... done anything. You can replay with increased difficulty modifiers, but it's still just not that interesting. After that clear I tried out one of the "trials"…

One that actually had me reflect on life a little bit, as well as keeping me engaged in the gameplay. The main hook of the game is the topic. It explores phobias, or small and big moments in life. It's all done in an interesting and fitting way. For example, one of the enemies is Agoraphobia (the fear of being unable to escape, like in a public area with…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Neurodeck is somewhat shallow. As a card game it's not too shabby, being made up of resource juggling between items, permanent power ups, your two main resources (basically health and energy etc). It ends up being a somewhat enjoyable combo. The art isn't half bad either, the illustrations and attack animations of the enemies being well polished and cool to look at. Now, why is Neurodeck shallow? I feel like the issues it portrays, how it portrays them and the focus on phobias overall, as well…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →EDIT 4-12-21 - I changed my review from "recommend" to "not" based on the addition below. I've been following this game for over a year. I can't say I'm thrilled with the final product. I'm going to give it a thumbs up because I am 2 hours in and still enjoy trying to solve the enemies. But if you don't own Slay the Spire or Dicey Dungeons, then I'd start there instead of here. PROS: - It looks nice, they did a good job on the aesthetics. - It plays like a traditional deck-builder, and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I also made a video review here: https://youtu.be/VvvLDWxvRGQ Neurodeck is a roguelike deckbuilder that tries to do something really artistic and unique but forgets it is a roguelike that needs to have a lot of replayability in order to succeed. It plays similarly to Slay the Spire though it feels like it has a lot less depth than games in the genre. In combat you have two main stats. You have your stamina and your sanity. Your stamina is almost like your mana and your sanity is your…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's not a bad game, it just needs more of what it already has. It's a fun game very similar to slay the spire but there lies the issue with Neurodeck. I can't help but compare this to slay the spire and see Neurodeck's flaw - lacking content. In 2.5 hours I've completed the game with all three emotions of the first character and the first emotion of the second character. This leaves only two more emotions left until I have completed the game with every deck type currently available. In every…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game's got a good base, but it lacks depth. If there were more cards, traits and status effects, it might be worth it. To be honest, it feels like the game was done barely finished for an EA and then never touched again by the devs. The artstyle is really nice but we don't learn much about the actual phobias we fight against.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Had it wishlisted before it was out, bought before there was a single review. Have played tons of these rouguelike deckbuilders. This one had very little depth to it, each fight doesn't really matter since you heal between them. Did 2 full play throughs, does not seem to get more exciting. Both your and your opponents cards lack much depth or strategy. To wrap it all up game also crashed on me (though I am sure this will be fixed). Had high hopes for this one, but was quite disappointed.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I get wanting to use phobias and mental illness in your games. I get wanting to then sell that game with that as the main selling point. However, when you do that, try to make it more than surface level at best. Pros from what little I played (I really wanted a refund super quick and that should tell you something): + Decent soundtrack, complimenting and enhancing the ominous feeling the game was going for. Doesn't get too loud to get in the way. + Phobia designs are incredible. They really…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bought it when it came out, couldn't hardly play it.... 1/10 Very upset with the purchase. Thought I'd try it out after they "FIXED IT UP". What I see I REALLY LIKE. It's so much better. The game is actually fun now. Can you please detail the PHOBIAS. Everything looks great in 4k except the Phobias; love the animations but I hope you detail them.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted to like this game, I love deckbuilders and I'm a psychology lecturer. I didn't have any illusions that these topics could be covered very effectively in this form, but figured that there would be space to put across one or two interesting ideas. The game isn't really properly finished. There are only two characters and the second character's story is copy-pasted from the first character even in places that makes no sense at all. The gameplay is alright but overall lackluster. I wish…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I gave a very small indie deckbuilder a shot, and this turned out to be a fairly mediocre game overall. I can name plenty of other games in the same genre that aren't regular streaming fodder, and none of them disappoint me quite like this one. You will be fighting the exact same enemies over and over again, with concrete patterns, which makes them compelling threats once, and then either enemies you avoid or enemies you easily take out every other time you see them. If you're here for some…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is actually pretty good, but it's super short. They have a great foundation for a cool adventure card game built around the human psyche, but in practice I've already beaten up to the hardest difficulty and unlocked everything there is to see at 14 hours of playtime. That being said, I enjoyed those 14 hours. I think this is well worth playing on a sale.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So I really like this game and I'm a simple man, I do not care about if this card makes sense or not since it's a damn game since that is what most reviews are about and not about the game itself. I love Roguelike deckbuilder games and this is one of them. There are many different playstyles and it has a lot of potential and the artstyle is great too. Unlike most games which only have a mana or energy bar that you use to play cards, this game has a stamina bar that you use to play cards and an…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Neurodeck : Psychological Deckbuilder is a somewhat simplistic console game, it's a console ported 2D minimalistic cardgame where, instead of the usual, interesting plot of attacking bad guys or defeating an enemy or going on a dungeon crawl, you live your life as someone with mental issues. Trying to address social issues through the medium of video games is misguided and can be harmful. While it's plausible to suggest the intention was noble, this can do more harm than good. Game…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Too shallow. Cards are unbalanced. Bored after two hours play
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game started out with some issues for sure in terms of theme and integration of mechanics but they've done a TON of work to fix the game. Looking forward to the final version and am excited to play some more of it! Would recommend if you enjoy psychology/deck builders.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Games really, really need to stop comparing themselves to Slay the Spire unless they are extremely confident. This game does have some unique ideas, I just wish it had the breadth and depth to back it up. Slay the Spire has four characters, each with different styles of play available. This game has, as far as I can tell, three or four different styles of play and lacks the simplicity of Slay the Spire's energy system in exchange for a stamina system that doesn't refill unless you use certain…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I didn't enjoy it, plain and simple. The UI occasionally had a weird bug where it stayed full size after you scrolled over it. The dream room makes you wait for the text to slowly be revealed in the text box instead of just being there. (I understand it's supposed to be dreamlike but the pace it was going was painfully slow.) I have a 4k monitor and it only has a 2k option. Wouldn't be a problem but the phobias don't look to be 2k to me, nor does some of the UI. Other than that it's an…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Neat idea for a game, but I would not get it just yet. It isn't finished. It's buggy (my game has irreparably crashed, twice in 3 hours of play), incomplete (not all of the content is available yet, can't get all the achievements), and the interface is too sensitive (every click triggers a game action, I mistakenly play cards a lot). I tried to return it, but I played it for one hour too long to be eligible for a refund, so I hope there is a big patch soon. My advice to prospective buyers would…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bought the game expecting nothing, thought it was just a small card game I could play once in a while. Well, it is, though I'm not sure how much longer I'm going to play it for. Maybe it's just me, but I get no satisfaction in starting completely over after a loss, of course you learn and become more experienced, but at a certain point enemies get so much stronger that I would start a fight knowing for sure that in a minute or two I'll be back at the starting screen. The game needs balance…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a D- as far as deckbattlers go. The psychology theme is more or less a gimmick with no gameplay impact. The actual game is missing a lot of features. Come back in a year and see if it's improved.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Neurodeck is a great card game and I don't understand the negative reviews at all. * I played 4 succesful runs, and I want to play more. It was good. Great card mechanics, you can see after a couple of hours how to build a great deck according to the run you are selecting. It's well made. * I haven't met any critical bugs, just a minor one (sometimes, when I'm choosing a card, effects are not showing). Overall, it's all good. * I didn't take offense that pizza could heal mental sickness in…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well I would rate this game higher. I was going to recommend it. But the Plague Doctor final boss is so unfair. I was sitting there with -50 stamina and no cards left to draw while he healed himself to full HP. What balance is in this game? And the "mental health" aspect is just a gimmick. I thought it was cute that all the cards are named after coping skills, and the art tracks with the phobias but, that's it. Gimmicky and unbalanced.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What a piece of crap. Just boring and pretentious.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →3/10 its just a card game and a bad one at that + bosses look cool - you need to lose over and over to unlock cards to win.....no chance of winning right from the get go.... most of the game has just been me playing every card i had in my hand, no real choice. - all about randomly picking cards up along the way
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What an absolutely beautiful game. In the very beginning I was kinda cold on it as everything seemed a bit obtuse and low-quality. But already halfway through my first run I completely turned around and now I respect and enjoy the hell out of this game. I can understand that a lot of people who do and have not experienced anxiety, depression or other kinds of mental issues, might not feel the same affinity for the issues being dealt with and might not appreciate the presentation of the various…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's hard to make a game tackling mental illness. Some have accused the developer of using anxiety and mental illness as an aesthetic, simplifying the issues and trivializing the solutions in a way that some may find offensive. The more generous interpretation is that the themes were gamified. Anxiety can't be overcome just with comfort food and a good night's sleep, just like how racing a car isn't as simple as pushing the up arrow on a keyboard. Part of making a game is taking larger…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →its pretty meh like its ok but apparently its unfinished it needs more content
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I spent less than USD$2 for this game on HB and for that I can rate it a 7.5/10. I would wait for a deep sale like that, as the premise is good, but there isn't anything new to the genre mechanics. All in all it is fun, and satisfying when you complete a round, and has decent replayability.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What a fresh approach to the deckbuilding genre! I highly like the artworks, the interesting skills, and the psychological approach at all. I hope that the depth of the game increases with upcoming patches/DLCs, because I feel that the game is a somewhat short experience, having successfully passed through a first run within the first hour of playing Neurodeck. Keep on creating new content, and this game will be one of my favorites.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I tried to enjoy the odd broken sentence. That I clicked on to lead me to another card it stated something unremarkable. in shades of lavender. Click this or the second one. Buy this game. I did.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An interesting take on a deck building game. It would be interesting to see more main characters and enemies in the future.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is it for me. A game that combines my love of psychological themes, (lightweight) Norse themes, deckbuilding roguelikes, and a profoundly rich soundtrack. While not currently very long, it was a strongly personal experience for me. If I could make games, I would've made this for myself.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The graphics of the game drew me in, but the gameplay and cards felt shallow and unexciting. The builds did not feel as customizable as I expected and the 'psychological' parts of the game felt gimmicky and pandering. Could've been a good game but it feels like not a lot of thought was put into it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I didn't like this game at first, but I pushed through and kept playing. I really appreciate what the designers are trying to do here. The game play is simple, but once you start unlocking more cards it gets a little better. I would like to see more variety, though, without having to fight so many monsters (phobias). It's still not clear what "passive" means.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think the game is good! <3 Style is great but you already knew that There are definitely a few faults in the game and some quirky mechanical choices - some of them I still think could use some work, but other things I ended up warming up to or didn't feel as though they were as big an issue as I first thought It good enough to make you care about where the faults lie - it's harder to get to grips with how the game plays than something like Slay The Spire, but once you get a feel for it it's…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of a kind deck-builder game with mental health scope and facing your struggles/fears gamified, if that's a word. Every choice you make, every traits you select makes up the strategies for each sessions; and it makes you stronger. It doesn't get easy the more you get used to it, which is the challenging bit. Unlocking a new character will make the hardships worth it. Neurodeck is a game with so much potential. PROS: News of patches and bugs to be fixed means the devs are listening. CONS:…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Eeeeeh... I'm a huge fan of Roguelike Deckbuilders, so I was excited to try this one! The gameplay is really weird (but bad weird). I just massively dislike having to play with action points AND stamina AND drawing power in order to go through a turn. It's just not really fun. This is a massive negative point for me. The art direction is weird too (but good weird). It's filled with phobias and stuff and it reminded me a lot Iris and the Giant, but in less touching. Overall, I will certainly…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's fine, Card game like any other except this one has massive soft locks and a few glitches still in it. Like having negative stamina because the enemy removes max stamina without a debuff, or having negative actions and being able to do anything except end your turn resulting in an ALT-F4 of your game because it's locked up. If you enjoy Deck-builders and don't mind the frustratingly bad fights on certain monsters you'll like this. Otherwise don't bother P.S Love that masculinity is a phobia

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →On the whole, this is an enjoyable roguelike deckbuilder and does what it says on the tin. The art style is beautiful, and I love the interesting designs of the enemies and animations. The music is also great, and I've found myself humming it throughout my day. Some of the enemies seem way too difficult however. For example, I have no idea how to consistently beat the shark, but he is *very* mean. I don't know if having a way to cancel enemy attacks or add block to yourself would help…

Some of the concepts could've been explained more thoroughly and the text on some cards could've been written more clearly. I still like this game, though. No, it is not the new Slay the Spire and we can't expect every new deck builder to become that. This is its very own thing and I truly appreciate this unique take on a roguelike deckbuilder. I really like the art and I think they maybe made the theme more justice than the genre. Another reviewer…

On the + side: The idea is awesome Animations of the phobias are smart Many interesting game mechanics: the shark phobia was a real challenge - it ... behaved like a shark would, eating your cards.
