There’s interesting ideas in this (terraforming, alien life, killer robots, survivalism), and in the end it’s a pretty fun movie. I’m quite nostalgic for early 00s films.

I saw Buzz Aldrin in public - he was wearing a MISSION TO MARS t-shirt & red braces - I stopped cold. Michael Collins liked one of RN's tweets about him once. That was maybe better?
unlabelledView post →I can see why I didn't remember anything about this movie. It's not terrible, but it's not remarkable either. I mixed it up with Mission to Mars and Red Planet. I think Mission to Mars (Brian De Palma in space!) is the one I liked, despite its unpopularity. #FrightClub
unlabelledView post →In other nostalgic news, it was 25 years ago this week that I started my first full-time position as a film critic, for Time Out New York. Reviewed in that issue: ERIN BROCKOVICH, which I liked, and MISSION TO MARS, which I decidedly did not.
unlabelledView post →Is there a worse movie soundtrack than the one to Brian de Palma's MISSION TO MARS (2000)? I don't think so.
unlabelledView post →Not stopping this De Palma-thon anytime soon so now rewatching my actual first De Palma movie Mission to Mars
unlabelledView post →So I’m writing up Mission to Mars, a movie that’s been so memory holed I’m sure people have forgotten it. It was a super safe PG rated movie about Mars with Gary Sinise and Tim Robbins in the lead. Now you’re already asking who the hell this movie was for? Let me drag this out another post.
unlabelledView post →I just watched the 2000 science-fiction movie "Mission to Mars", which begins with a barbecue full of families celebrating together...and then the words "June 2020" flashed on screen. My reaction:
unlabelledView post →Many embarrassing nominations and wins in their history. They nominated Brian De Palma as Worst Director for Dressed to Kill, Scarface, Body Double, The Bonfire of the Vanities and Mission to Mars. I only count one bad movie out of those 5
unlabelledView post →at the end of MISSION TO MARS on opening night I said, loudly, "worst movie I've ever seen" and the theater applauded (UNIVERSAL SOLDIER 2 is *worse* but it doesn't have a funny story to go with it)
unlabelledView post →We asked this very ? to @grahamskipper.bsky.social & @gholson.bsky.social on our latest pod & the gents (who were on promoting their new film, #ManFindsTape) had great answers: Graham’s was opening night of ‘BLAIR WITCH’ in NYC & John’s was his theater collectively turning against ‘MISSION TO MARS’.
unlabelledView post →I will say that while I mock De Palma on Mission to Mars, I get why he was hired. He was coming off Mission Impossible (which actually was a him film). He was also a guy you brought in on a troubled film. If you read The Devil’s Candy, the studio is lost running the film and he does his best.
unlabelledView post →Mission to Mars (B movie from 2000)
unlabelledView post →Brian De Palma's MISSION TO MARS would make a great double feature with Ridley Scott's PROMETHEUS because both movies are doing the same thing but (weird for him) De Palma's movie argues humanity is a miracle full of grace and Ridley argues that humanity sucks and deserves extinction.
unlabelledView post →The Princess of Mars film when this, Mission to Mars and Red Planet all flopping forced that to be called the incredibly boring John Carter:
unlabelledView post →In the movie Mission to Mars, they have Tim Robbins' character show up at a barbecue in an old gasoline powered car, explictly pointing out how much he, and his car, are from an earlier era. That movie was set in 2025, so they are just a few decades off...
unlabelledView post →MISSION TO MARS: Never not wild to me that in the year 2000, Brian De Palma made a Robert Zemeckis movie while Robert Zemeckis made a Brian De Palma film.
unlabelledView post →Easy mistake mate, they both came out in 2000, Mission to Mars was the De Palma film. That one I can't remember if I saw or not...
unlabelledView post →Rewatching the movie Mission To Mars (2000) to see how accurate the future was predicted, five minutes in and already off to a bad start
unlabelledView post →The first brand new movie I saw in a digital presentation was Mission To Mars (De Palma) and it only looked not quite right when the screen would become bright. But honestly at this point digital presentation looks great most of the time and is preferable to an old beaten up print, hot take
unlabelledView post →Mission To Mars movie. The engine damage was mostly my work. Always fun to do damage. I've been assigned to do a lot of damaged models on various shows. A master of disaster. unlabelledView post →“Mission to Mars”? The movie that’s bad?
unlabelledView post →Back in the day, I and a few friends decided to rent one schlock sci-fi movie and one good sci-fi movie. We picked Pitch Black and Mission to Mars. We succeeded, but it turned out we had put the movies in the opposite slots.

unlabelledView post →Seeing this pop up in a movie last night was wild. Guys, you have to social distance, you can't be doing this. Also everyone in this movie seemed like they were 2 seconds away from kissing each other the entire film. Mission to Mars is wild.
unlabelledView post →Mess of a film with negative chemistry that I still dig! (and probably still like it more than its parallel MISSION TO MARS). Not to mention my favorite space suits (especially when they remind me of 90s space LEGO)
unlabelledView post →Mission to Mars It couldn't figure out what kind of movie it wanted to be.
unlabelledView post →There was a movie 'Mission to Mars' (2000) that fits in nicely with this even though it wasn't a box office success.
unlabelledView post →I love this film! Especially the tech design and AIMEE. Mission to Mars isn't as good I think - it has a wonderful first half, and then they reach the planet and it all kinda falls apart IMHO.
unlabelledView post →Was glad to pod w/ @beckysayers.bsky.social again & glad to chat w/ 2 of the countless good humans in the #Austin film scene, several of whom helped make #ManFindsTape! The gents told many a good story here, but—of all things—I’m still laughing about John’s theater turning against MISSION TO MARS… 🤣

unlabelledView post →Are any of you fans of the 2000 movie Mission to Mars, starring Gary Sinise? That movie also features a dust storm as an element of the plot, but focuses on the theme of extraterrestrial life as opposed to the theme of human ingenuity that we see here. #HATM
unlabelledView post →if you need to feel some hope and some other good emotions from what's mostly a not that great scifi movie, Mission to Mars is there like 90% of the movie is pretty generic, and the rest is pretty great, a pretty good last gasp of the 90's hoping for the future, released in 2000
unlabelledView post →#MissiontoMars disappointed me 25 years ago, and it disappointed me again for this retrospective... 25 years later, Disney's "Mission to Mars" still fails to achieve escape velocity...

unlabelledView post →Advanced screening of Mission to Mars on a college campus. The mood was sour from the start, culminating in a roar of disappointment when the movie shied away from showing Tim Robbins’ death, then a collective roar of laughter at our own bloodthirst.

unlabelledView post →"Obsession," "M:!" and "Greetings" are def my top picks from this group. Where are "Mission to Mars," "The Black Dahlia," "Home Movies" and obviously something else I'm blanking on (e.g., that straight-to-DVD movie he did a few years ago with the GOT actor).
unlabelledView post →MISSION TO MARS. Yeah, I love & cherish this very silly, corny & wonderfully odd Brian De Palma movie. Why the most cyncial director made a gentle ode to space travel & the "value" of the human species is beyond me but I vibe with this fantastic looking movie! Ennio Morricone's music is INCREDIBLE!

unlabelledView post →I wish I had more of these, but the closest is when the astronaut gets dismembered (in surprisingly gruesome fashion for a PG-rated movie) at the beginning of MISSION TO MARS and an old lady exclaimed "Oh ish!"
unlabelledView post →The one movie I've walked out of was Beverly Hills Ninja. The worst that I've sat through were Highlander 2, Mission to Mars and Dungeons & Dragons (2000).
unlabelledView post →the next movie up is Gone in 60 Seconds. the preview on the dvd was for Mission to Mars, which may be the most Made In The Year 2000 movie ever made
unlabelledView post →Good point. The first digital movie presentation I saw was De Palma’s Mission To Mars which looked pretty good UNTIL they went to a white screen or a brightly lit environment, which was where it really looked like video. Digital presentation has improved since but really took some getting used to
unlabelledView post →#95: Mission to Mars The opening reveal that this movie starts in June 2020 and ends in June 2026 is crazy. The future is truly now. Why is Shai-Hulud on Mars? #filmsky boxd.it/et8kSr
unlabelledView post →For me it’s Mission to Mars. Hands down. I enjoy pretty much everything I watch to some degree, but that was just such a poor movie in so many ways.
unlabelledView post →No space is very cool! Didn't you see Mission to Mars? Tim Robbins takes his helmet off & he instantly freezes! That was a real thing that happened because that movie was a documentary & the events happened in real time!
unlabelledView post →I really liked Mission to Mars. Heck, it was even shown in my school, as one of those 'we finished our exams early, let's watch a movie until the testing period ends' kind of flicks.
unlabelledView post →Man, I really liked this movie back in the day. This and it's twin movie Mission to Mars were both just pretty solid to me but also seem to just be sorta forgotten
unlabelledView post →I stuck it out waiting for something to happen. Everything played out like a cheap TV movie with some ugly heavily choreographed scenes. And the soundtrack. Jeez. It's on a par with Ennio Morricone's "Mission to Mars" soundtrack - probably good on its own, but does not fit the film at all.
unlabelledView post →Fair enough. And to be fair, Ghost of Mars isn't the worst Mars film of its time. That would be Red Planet. And Mission to Mars isn't much better, though I find it the least shitty of the 3. But Ghost Of Mars is the one I've seen the most since it does hit the "so bad it's good" sweet spot.
unlabelledView post →Happy birthday to American actor, filmmaker, and musician Tim Robbins, born today in 1958. Robbins is known in fandom for his roles in Jacob’s Ladder, Mission To Mars, Erik the Viking, and War of the Worlds, and Silo, and directing the film The Cradle Will Rock. #TimRobbins
unlabelledView post →Mission to Mars. I really feel like I'm the only person in the world who actually likes this movie.
unlabelledView post →Introduce yourself using only one food you refuse to eat, one movie you’ll never watch again, and one song you can’t stand. Mayonnaise. Mission to Mars - worst movie ever made. God Bless the USA, Lee Greenwood.
unlabelledView post →18) Mission to Mars: I certainly liked this much better than the other Mars based movie about a ship called Mars 1 going to Mars on a mission (Red Planet). It's a messy movie with some wonderful looking sequences and great music. Didn't like the shift to ancient aliens in the latter part...

unlabelledView post →Spotted Mission To Mars (2000) on tv for a trashy, fun rewatch and got excited. Turns out I was a dolt. It was, in fact, very bad tv movie Escape From Mars (1999). Even worse, I sat through the whole thing…?!
unlabelledView post →It’s like De Palma gets to take a stab at 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. Obviously, it’s not nearly the film Kubrick’s is, but it might be better than Peter Hyams’s 2010. Now watching - MISSION TO MARS (2000) D. Brian De Palma #missiontomars #briandepalma
unlabelledView post →I'm not 100% sure, but I'm like 99.9% sure that Mission To Mars was the first science fiction movie I fell in love with. Just found out it's free to watch on YT. 😭😭😭 I'm so happy!!
