Disney Japan coproduced it along with Studio Ponoc (a studio made up of ex-Ghibli animators) and khara (the creators of Neon Genesis Evangelion).

I also love similar works like Ronja the Robber's Daughter and Mary and the Witch's Flower. There's a bunch I still have to see though!

unlabelledView post →'Mary and the Witch's Flower' from Studio Ponoc was a super sweet movie! Very obviously influenced by Ghibli (in a good way), and while it didn't hit me in the emotions as hard as some Ghibli movies do, I'd watch it again! (🧵 with some spoilers below while I write my thoughts out.) #chetrambles

He directed the studio's first release, based on yet another English book. More energetic than his previous projects, this remains his most recent feature film.
unlabelledView post →I don't know that it was a fully SUCCESSFUL attempt, but it was an ATTEMPT at least. Hell, when they wanted to make their own film, some of the animators just LEFT Ghibli and formed studio Ponoc to make MARY AND THE WITCH'S FLOWER.
unlabelledView post →I was like "that's not a Ghibli movie, right?". And then I remembered, oh no, I was thinking of Mary and the Witch's Flower. Which was a good movie.

unlabelledView post →Mary and the Witch's Flower: 8/10 Pretty good movie. Characters were fun and memorable, animation was phenomenal, music was great, and the story was pretty decent. The only problem I had with the movie was the extremely slow beginning, which almost made me stop watching tbh
unlabelledView post →Mary and the Witch's Flower The first film by Studio Ponoc, the offshoot studio of Ghibli, and it's directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, who directed a couple of Ghibli movies prior. I bring that up because while I like this movie a fair bit, it's very much riding off of Ghibli's coat tails.
unlabelledView post →Mary and the Witch's Flower might be my favorite Hiromasa Yonebayashi movie. It being such an accessible film plays to his strengths, I think. It also feels like if an early Pokemon movie was somehow predominantly animated by former Ghibli talent. It's a pretty comfy watch.
unlabelledView post →Today is Yonebayashi Hiromasa's birthday! 🎂 He directed Arrietty and When Marnie Was There at Studio Ghibli, and then Mary and the Witch's Flower and part of Modest Heroes at @ponoc-i.bsky.social

unlabelledView post →Just watched Mary and the Witch's Flower again, and it would be one of my favorite Ghibli films... if it were a Ghibli film! The apple doesn't fall far from the tree with Studio Ponoc, and Hiromasa Yonebayashi works much the same magic here as he did with Arrietty and When Marnie Was There. No pun intended. Mary sits comfortably next to such Ghibli heroines as Arrietty, Kiki, and Chihiro. #Anime #MaryAndTheWitchsFlower #StudioPonoc #HiromasaYonebayashi
