I realize you hate the actor for whatever reason, but the fact of the matter is in the article you won't read. >Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer dismissed the case on the third day of the trial, after learning that the prosecution had failed to turn over key evidence — a cache of bullets — to the defense. The judge blasted Morrissey’s handling of the case, calling it “so near to bad faith as to show signs of scorching.”

Here's a new post by me on Robert Altman's adaptation of The Long Goodbye, exploring Elliott Gould's portrayal of Philip Marlowe, the movie's Scuzzy '70s feel, and a multiverse-style fantasy imagining the ideal artists and bands to cover the film's title song. reclinernotes.com/2026/09/13/t...

Treated myself to THE BIG SLEEP last night. I haven't watched it in years and years and had forgotten many of the plot twists. Man, what a great film. The only time Bogey played Marlowe. Seems like he played him a dozen times, but nope. Just a perfect film.

My family gave me much of the day to watch old detective movies and be weird and I gotta say MARLOWE isn’t great, but Garner questioning Rita Moreno while she strips on stage (along with the existential brutality of what happens immediately after) was very good. Upper 3rd Gardner, lower Chandler.

A brilliant movie with one of the bleakest endings ever that angered Marlowe lovers as it seemed to totally betray his character but as it was purposefully set in the cynical 70s by Altman, it made complete sense. To me. ‘Yeah. I even lost my cat.’ youtu.be/aRlpydmkWYI?...

Friendly reminder The Silent Partner (1978) is a Christmas movie AND it’s unsettlingly Canadian. Gould is kinda still Philip Marlowe but also a bank teller / fish nerd (👋) & Plummer has fun being scary, plus it has cool Hitchcock thing of “what if u were caught up in a situation that made u sexier”

In contrast to the tough-talking, hard-boiled portrayal of Philip Marlowe in previous films, Gould plays him as a slacker dude, touchingly affectless. It creates a pleasing dissonance, hijacking the notion of a plot-driven detective movie and replacing it with something stranger... 2/2

I love when I watch a film and it just stays with me for awhile after. Today it was “The Long Goodbye” Really loved the way private eye Philip Marlowe was portrayed by Elliot Gould. Marlowe develops a machine which renders the spaceships incapable of straight flight. The film is a prime example of what good science fiction is all about. It has tension, extraterrestrials, fast pacing, and good special effects for its day. This film is very suspenseful and well worth a look.

Robert Montgomery stars and directs himself as Phillip Marlowe in Raymond Chandler's Lady in the Lake (1947) I wasn't huge fan of the POV gimmick used throughout the entire film, but it was Christmas themed, Audrey Totter made some great faces, and a nod to Lila Leeds as "Receptionist" #noir

What’s important is the characters he encounters. The most touching is Moose Malloy, played by an ex-prize fighter named Jack O'Halloran. Moose towers over everyone in the film. Both in stature and in the immensity of his need. When he gets out of prison, he hires Marlowe to find his Velma.

Another forgotten detail, it's our old friend the Bradbury Building as the deathless doctor's underground lair. 📽️ Klute (1971): Klute is Sutherland's character's name, but the movie is about Fonda's character. He's no Marlowe or Spade, he barely does anything. It's really a character study of a woman who happens to be a sex worker, but is also a person, which maybe was shocking in 1971. She earned the Oscar.

I somehow missed it in the movie proper, but the credits had a line in there about a poster for the movie, "Lady in the Lake" - that'd be a 1947 Philip Marlowe adaptation that was also filmed (almost) entirely from one character's POV. Like Hardcore Henry, it was also not well received at the time.
