Mable & The Wood
Developer Triplevision Games

50 of 50 · most liked firstReview by [url=https://store.steampowered.com/curator/34633003-Gaming-Masterpieces/] Gaming Masterpieces - The greatest games of all time on Steam. Is this game a masterpiece? The first question should be... WHAT is this? A little girl with long red hair, the only one able to remove the sword from the rock, is the chosen one? She doesn't speak, can't jump or climb, she cannot even wield the sword and just pulls it along, but she goes on a quest to kill all the nasties in the country?…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Review Based on v.1.3 of the game, 2nd September 2019 Thanks to three patches, improvements to the game have been made. An added map marker to show which room you are in (though not where in a room you are) is a welcome start, as is the improved handling on the faerie form which now allows traversing some of the trickier puzzles with less frustration. I've played another couple of hours and the game continues to have great charm and ideas - especially the humour of the characters and their…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Overall, enjoyed my time with the game. Pros: - Art and music are great. - Enjoyed the unique 'no jump' mechanic -- you have to use your shape-shifting powers to get around, like flying short-distances as a fairy, or (my personal favourite) swinging across long stretches as the spider, or flinging yourself at enemies as a stone golem (very satisfying). Cons: - Lacks variety in enemies and enemy attack/movement patterns. - Map is useless at the moment so it can be unclear at times about…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Although this is an EXTREMELY FLAWED GAME, I recommend. It's a reinvention of the Metroidvania genre. HOWEVER, I'm using the term "Metroidvania" VERY loosely here. There's a bit of backtracking here and there. Small open worlds that you get familiar with and then they get permanently locked away, never to be revisited. Very Linear. And that's a bit of a disappointment. It's just about as much of a Metroidvania as Iconoclasts. I need to point out that this game is completely riddled with bugs.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →To put it simply, this game is frustrating and a little bit buggy. You hardly ever feel like you are in control of the movements, i had to do a lot of backtracking to find keys so i could progress and i didn't like how the map worked. Not everething was bad, i enjoyed first two bosses, graphics is nice and music is good also. So if you find it on -75% discount it might be worth to give it a shot, otherwise avoid it. I personally just rage quitted and decided to write this review, i doubt that…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a great concept, but honestly it's not executed well enough to maintain my interest over the rest of my library. This game has various glaring issues with both its wildly varying difficulty from "skippably easy" to "why didn't that work" due to controls and timing, and the annoyances due to bugs and design flaws. I don't even care enough to go in-depth. Read other reviews, it's Mixed for a reason.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The mechanism for motion / combat in this game is fairly unique. The ability to do mostly pacifist or completely pacifist runs and get different endings, with greater difficulty due to lacking the additional boss-unlocked powers, is also interesting. However, the fact that you do not continually have access to a minimap, and that you frequently end up taking one-way paths-of-no-return, make -attempting- a pacifist run enormously frustrating, as if you don't take exactly the correct sequence…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Awkward, terrible controls ruin what could otherwise be an interesting game with good pixel art. Your character is clunky, slow, and dies very quickly.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very poor mechanics and the game also needs to be improved in other matters too. I lost my interest very quickly.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like the concept but it falls flat in a few areas: Physics, Collision, Mapping, and Other small issues. I don't totally have an issue with how combat works in this game but it just dosen't feel that good and polished, neither does a lot of the game. I hope either a huge rework could be made or i hope a sequel that fleshes this concept out and polishes everything comes out because this is a cool idea but just gets watered down by the game being how it is. I can tell the devs understand and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A bold, beautiful adventure like no else from this year, Mable & The Wood weaves in and out of different ideas with none ever overstaying their welcome. Kill your enemies and take on their forms. Discover secret areas and hidden loot. Overall, I really enjoyed the amount of freedom a title like this can offer. Thanks to the different abilities, some puzzles can be skipped entirely, and not only is it possible to beat the story without ever killing a single enemy, but it also unlocks a secret…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Overall it's a good game, but there's room for improvement. Sometimes the commands are not so responsive and the gameplay don't feel tight. There is no compass on the minimap, and you have to guide yourself through runes on the map, it’s a fun concept, but personally I prefer the compass. Other than that, I really loved the concept, music and art. The game is a little clunky but it’s really fun!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So I deeply respect what this game was going for, it's unique and cute. But the movement is a bit too janky for me to dedicate hours to beating it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So.. I just have one question... Why is there such an obvious "secret" to go straight to the lava zone? Getting stuck there is misery on your first playthrough. Spent the first hour burning while I learned the controls. Restarted, got 2 new forms and then got stuck in town because I used a key elsewhere. Oh well...
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Too buggy. The spider and ghost forms don't work well (mostly the ghost form, I just ended up dashing to the right of the screen always). I also just tried playing from the start again after months of not touching this game, I think I got stuck in the caves? I only had the base ability and I was unable to go anywhere due to locked doors, stone walls, and not having enough flight time to get out through where I came in :/ Too bad, a game where you play as a shapeshifter sounds so fun
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →BEFORE WE START... Ah.... This game big of wasted potencial... Big... Damn... Wasted... Potencial... WHO IS GENIOUS BEHIND THIS FIGHTING GAMEPLAY MECHANICS? Seriously who? Its so basic and weird... We gotta fly with changing in to fairy, leave our sword behing, past our enemies then call our sword back to attack them... Wow... Thats... Totaly amazing... Yeah why they should add most basic thing you can do with sword right? Doing different things is better than doing well maked things i…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Endings all feel unsatisfying I beat the game once as a "pacifist" (i.e., I didn't kill any bosses, but some normal monsters were inevitably harmed as "movement is combat" and it's very difficult not to kill some things as you traverse the levels), after blundering into a secret shortcut by accident early in the game. Once you've started the pacifist path, you're basically locked into it - playing the game violently is now impossible, as you cannot reach the bosses to kill them unless you've…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was on my wish list for a while. Due to mixed reviews I waited for a sale. I'm glad I did. 15 bucks seems steep for this. I restarted twice for getting stuck in a certain spot in the beginning of the game. I played through a decent chunk unlocking a few forms. The game's controls kinda felt clunky. Changing to different forms feels awkward. I liked the music, the way the game looks, and the idea of the game. I thought the way you attack with your sword is interesting in some of the forms.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was excited to try this, it looked pretty interesting. And it is pretty interesting, but tangling with the physics engine is already driving me to alcoholism. I think I'm just going to stop playing now.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →To be honest I am a little bit surprised... while playing the game at EGX Rezzed in London I was a bit confused about the controls, but that was probably because I kind of missed the tutorial. However I loved the whole concept and style of the game so I now gave it a try. I played for something like two hours(?) so I am not thaaaat far in the game, but I love it! The machanics of changing your shape and having multiple possibilies to defeat enemies, the puzzles and the humor. You can clearly…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Mabec Mable & The Wood is a platformer requiring skills, transforming between animals and using their abilities in order to progress. Some of the controls feels tricky to master. The lack of mouse support in a 2D platformer is rarely missing, except this is one of those times. Collect gems to purchase items. Upon death you will lose them with a one time chance to save the lost ones, Dark Souls-style. Sound FX felt a bit lacking. Some sections are overstaying its welcome. The pixelated art…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I supported this project in during the Kickstarter and have zero regrets. It's smart, it's different and it breaks a lot of the rules of the genre in ways that are refreshing. As a first game from what was initially a one man band, the results are captivating and the world is compelling. The movement feels generally great and tying it into the combat in this way is almost as revolutionary as the first time Mario stomped a Goomba. It has one or two quirks to be ironed out - it's an wide and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Disappointing but full of promise. If this was early access I would keep my eye on this game like a hawk. But, since its a full release i'm not sure there will be improvments made. it feels like its missing 1 key component to being a great game. I'm not sure what that component is, but its missing something. I don't want to thumbs down cause I will be completing the game. Its hard to thumbs down a game you complete imo.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've played for about an hour and a half on the twitch version I got for free despite only playing for 20 minutes on steam. I honestly just had to stop because the movement of the spider ability just feels so rough around the edges and makes the game unfun to play. It will drag you along edges of platforms in a very wonky way and sometimes clanks with enemies or other platforms off screen, making you fall into spikes immediately. It brings down the whole experience since that is the main…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a console ported 2D retro pixel platformer infesting the Steam marketplace (there are literally thousands of these games). This one has a gimmick where you must shapeshift into other forms to jump around and perform attacks. On launch, the developer immediately insults every PC gamer everywhere by insisting you use a console peasant childrens toy gamepad. Are they not aware this is PC? Or just couldn't work out KB+M? There's no graphics tweaking options, resolution is fixed, so…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted to like it, but the controls are like trying to tap your head and rub your belly at the same time.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An ugly and dumb cousin of Celeste. But I should give credit, it is quite a unique one. Nevertheless, amateurish design "here, mom, I made my own unity platformer" makes the game unplayable.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Mable And The Wood actually got me by surprise, I went into this game with only seeing a few trailers. However the controls are so inviting and the movement is very unique!. Sinking in a few hours in every sitting is extremely easy, just exploring what you can do with all the various forms!. I'm a massive fan of Metroidvanias and Pixel art! … I feel if you are too then definitely check this out! :) Update: i have this on switch - but felt i would leave a review here!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →amazing idea for a game janky/clunky as hell gave this game sooo many trys, really wanted to like/finish it
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This basically a first Impression, should i come back and play this game further i will update this should further down the line gameplay change in a positive way. In Mable & The Wood you play Mable a little girl carrying around magical sword that is far to heavy for her. To aid you in traversing the world you are transforming into various fantasy and animal forms that use the magical sword in various ways. As the fairy you leave the sword behind, fly forward (or wherever you need to go)…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I recommend this game despite its many flaws, especially at the $3 sale price. I had fun, couldn’t put it down, and actually reached the ending, which is more than I can say for most games I try these days. I never saw a forest or got any boss fights or abilities, and the game seemed weirdly difficult and surreal… I guess I did the pacifist route by accident? I have many complaints, such as the crystal currency being pointless because you lose most of it every time you get hit and every time…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game and story for the first few hours of playing so far. There were issues and frustrating parts of course, but the music is pretty and helps to get through some level designs that feel like padding to slow the pace down. The mechanic is interesting but the control for swapping did feel a little bit clunky. It feels really bad to lose all the diamonds upon death. Especially with the statue mechanic that was inspired from Hollow Knight - it doesn't mean much when statues sometimes spawn…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Please FIX the Controller in STEAM DECK...been trying to play this game for so long...
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Innovative but tedious mechanics, nice world and premise i suppose.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very interesting game. It uses a style of combat that I haven't seen done in a side scroller and the multiple endings and secrets add replayability. All together a fun experience. Only real complaints I have with it are that it's a bit short and some of the achievements seem to be bugged. The biggest one is mainly a problem with the ui in that the game allows you to buy potions from a shop keeper, but to my knowledge never tells you how to activate them, at least not if you're playing with…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty good game, wish I was good at Metroidvania. Also, thought the Cultists were Druids until I made my review and read the description a bit more.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Kickstarted this bad boy. Tried to do a pacifist run. Passed a fist through my monitor. Fun game so far though. Would recommend <3
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An unique and adorable game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Originally, I said that this game felt really unpolished. But, in the past few days, the devs have put out two patches that address a lot of the issues that the original release had, and I'm happy to say that it's a much better experience. The death system is much better, with the character only losing half of their diamonds instead of all of them, and the camera now pans much better so that you can better plan for obstacles, but the statue spawning has yet to be fixed as of patch 1.0.2. The…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Let's preface by saying this game is pretty good. It's extremely worth the price and worth a good 10-20 hours of game. But for the game itself: It's a bit buggy sometimes, the exploration can be dizzingly confusing, and going for any obscure achievement is hard beyond belief if you just try looking by yourself. Even the guide can be unclear. All in all it's a bit messy. And there are a number of potential softlocks. However, it's an extremely charming game with a pleasing environment that…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The mechanics of this one are a bit hard to wrap your head around at first but once you pick it up, it starts to feel much more natural. Besides, I applaud the devs for doing something unique and unconventional, it really makes this game stand out. I definitely found it pretty tough but I'm also not the most skilled player ever if I'm being honest, so it may be more of a user error thing. The pixel art was the biggest highlight for me, absolutely gorgeous with tons of small subtle details…
